Magnum t.v. series used a total of 5 308's sometimes you can see this by the mirrors if you can't spot the rear emblem, sometimes it was a round mirror type, then some square ones and even a single round mirror.

355 or 360 spyder. I am a big Magnum fan. Can remember watching all of the episodes to watch the 308. The story lines were good also. Would love to see an updated version of the program.

Bummer:

Internet Rumor #2:
Theres a movie site in the U.K. that is reporting that a Magnum PI feature film may be released in 2004. You wanna confirm that or quell it?

Taken by surprise, Selleck stammers for a moment. "Uh, well....somebody better call me." He laughs. "Ill probably have to be in it, unless they recast the role, and I dont think theyre going to get very rich doing that.

"Ive heard nothing about it," he confirms. "Id be interested in it if they did [plan a feature film], but its going to have to be a good script. People seem to want to see [Magnum on the big screen] and the studios ought to realize that.

Yes, they sure ought to!

www.carmania.co.uk are able to hire out some of the vehicles on display at the museum - anyone fancy Del-boy's three-wheeler for a weekend?

If that is too shabby, they also have Ferrari's, Porsches, etc..

I can get special rates if anyone is keen.

http://www.carsofthestars.com/

(Go to 'television cars' - page 8)

"Ferrari - Magnum PI
This long running TV series, originally screen in 1980, made the actor Tom Selleck a major star. The plot for the series revolved around the adventures of an ex-Vietnam war veteran turned private eye. Magnum lives at the Hawaian home of a wealthy writer and drives a fabulous Ferrari. The 308 GTSi, to give it its proper name is powered by a 3 litre V8 producing 250bhp. The car on display is the actual Ferrari used in the series. "

I have been to the museum and it is awesome. Highlight were the original BatMobiles from the 1966 TV show, and the three film ones, in batcave settings!

The car from the show is now for sale. They have a few pics of it.
From the Ferrari service of costa mesa website:

This is THE 1979 Ferrari 308GTs that was used in the making of the Magnum P.I. TV show. The VIN Number is 29109 and this car is well documented ( type 'Magnum PI Ferrari' in the address bar of your browser). It currently has 86771 miles on the odometer. This car has all the books, records and tools still with it and it runs and drives very well. It is currently registered in California and has all the required emissions equipment in place. This car has been appraised at $100,000.
Serious offers please.

If James Bond can jump from a Bentley to an AM DB4 to a BMW Z8 & now an AM Vanquish then Magnum can jump from a 308 to a 360 spyder :-)

Mister Jones: I vividly remember reading that Lary Minetti (Rick character) bought one of the cars. He was an avid car enthusiast and was talking about attending driving school ala Bob Bondurant in this same article.

Eric Brigham: I'm with you on updating the "cast". The 360 Spider, SL500, Bell Copter all sound great. How about giving Higgins an A6 or even an S6?

Robin Masters lost it all in the dotcom crashes, Enron and Worldcom debacles, and total downturn in the economy. He flys Magnum back to Hawaii to try and track down the dotcom and stock market scammers that lost his fortune. Knowing full well that none of the scammers are actually IN Hawaii, Magnum seizes the opportunity for a few months of armchair (armrest) money while driving the old 308 around Honolulu looking for the non-existant crooks. Masters is getting on up in years, and isn't really too sharp these days, so Magnum figures he can milk the whole thing for some easy greenbacks to line his own bank account. Unfortunately, when Magnum fires up the dusty 308 in Master's garage for the first time in years, the timing belts "give up the ghost" and throw a rod through the block faster that a tourist can return a black lava rock back to the beach where he stole it! (Hawaiian bad luck fable).

Masters can't afford the repair bill, so he's forced to substitute a used VW bug for the 308. Magnum tries to make the best of it, but overrevs the 1600cc 4 banger the first time he tries to peel out on the grassy roadside. Stuttgart's finest machinery grenades itself and showers a nearby pineapple field with aluminum shrapnel and 30 weight. The Hawaii Five-O call out a hazmat team to clean up the mess, and send the bill to an already financially taxed Robin Masters, who can't even pay Magnum for his one day on the job. Masters files for bankruptcy, and loses his only remaining flowered Hawaiian shirt to Magnum. Magnum calls it a day, throws in the towel, and hops a plane back to L.A. where he attempts to track down the REAL killer of OJ's wife.

One other thing. David. I think that they would be careful not to ruin a Ferrari. I have every episode of Magnum P.I. on tape. And,in the 2 part episode where "Mack" gets blown up after he starts up the 308 and it explodes,it's very plain to see that the blown up car is a Fiat X1/9. Still a nice car to blow up for a show, but, not a Ferrari. After that episode they went to a QV 308.

I am betting that it would be the 360spider. But,maybe depend on the "mood" of the show. If he came back as a high rolling,"super P.I." then, definitely an Enzo. A regular guy,the 360 spider,(also for head room. I believe that I read somewhere that Selleck is 6'4",or 6'6",and would need an open top car). But,IMHO,and as a 308 owner, would prefer him sticking with his TRADEMARK 308. THAT is what Magnum P.I. was all about. No other Ferrari would do. It's tradition.I actually have a couple 308 model kits, unassembled, from the '80's that have "Magnum P.I." on the box! You cant put the Dukes of Hazard in anything other than a '69 Dodge Charger,General Lee. Or,as the other post said,Starsky & Hutch in a Red Ford Torino with that white stripe on the side,(sponsored by Crest Whitestrips,Music by the Whitestripes) Or,James Garner,in the Rockford Files driving his bronze Firebird. Fred G. Sanford in his old junk pick-up truck. And,

It isn't what Thomas Magnum would drive, its what Robin Masters would buy....if the location is Hawaii, a 8-cyl. car would make the cut - since the newer models can easily accomodate a heavy/tall person, my money would be with a classic red/tan 360 with a 6-speed manual. Robin Masters being the old-school traditionalist and all...

Wasn't there something about them using a GTS partially because of Tom Selleck's height as well as camera positioning?

Dave, you mean you don't like comments like, "Wasn't that Magnum PI's car?" To think, I rather enjoy it when the ladies try to imitate Julia Roberts and say, "This baby must corner like it's on rails!" Shows that they're actually one of the few that recognize an Esprit and you gotta love a girl that likes cars!

360 is cool, but movies like to get a car that hasn't hit the market yet. 360 is too old by movie standards. This might be a chance for Porsche to get back for the big mistake they made turning down the TV show.

GT will hit the market at the right time. Would be best bet for the way movie folks think. Also GT is not as slick looking as 360,so makes it a bit more realistic looking.

(does anyone have a top down shot of 360 so I can see them side by side?)

I don't think he ever drove a 328, only went up to a QV.

I guess the car, I would say, would have to be based on the story line. I can't imagine anyone else as Magnum other than Tom Sellick. He lives around here in the Camarillo hills from what I hear.

If/when this movie comes out, we should have a Ferrari drive to the opening night.

Did you know that when they were prepairing for that show, the producers originally wanted to use a 928 convertible, or 928 with targa top? Porsche didn't want them to do that since it was not a regular production car, and they went with the Ferrari. Much better for it too, I think- the Ferrari was more exclusive, and made people like me long to have one someday:-)

I think the new Magnum should have a 360 spider. 550 Barchetta is almost too over the top- want to make it somewhat believeable (I see people with the 360 spiders occasionally where I work in NY City, but never seen a 550 barchetta). Well, believeable in a relative sense...

Don't let BMW hear this. They paid so much money to force their cars into Jame Bond movies, and turn that show into a long long dull car commecial.

Thanks BMW! Bond belongs in something better then what i see on the road everyday on my way to work.

Murciolago is coming out with a chop-top next year. Ferrari needs a new chop-top or car doesn't make for good long shots of island driving.

I've heard / read that there are plans to bring "Magnum P.I." to the big screen a feature film.

Don't know if Sellick will star or as recent Hollywood trends go, just have a walk on role.

So...who do you think should star as Magnum (if not Tom) and what do you think he should drive?
