Peter: Using the aluminum polish powder wetted into a sludge, and then rubbed on the aluminum valve covers made them quite nicely bright metal and took off any surface oxidation. |

Mike - I had good results with the aluminum powder, but it doesn't seem to help the valve covers (they are clean, but remain quite dark). Do you find it works well on valve covers? I tried the rub n' buff on one small spot and it seem to work very well. I really didn't want to use rub 'n buff because it seems like a coating that would wash off, but it looks pretty natural and seems very durable. I'll see how it looks in a few months before I do the rest of the covers. |

If you want a more "natural look" instead of Rub-N-Buff, buy some aluminum polish at the supermarket. It comes in a powder like Comet cleanser. Take some of the powder, and add water until it makes a "sludge". You can use that to naturally polish out the oxidation on the surface of your aluminum heads and/or other surfaces. |

"Silver Leaf" is correct; and no, don't worry that it's combustible. |

I found it at an art store - I bought "silver leaf" - Is that the right color? Also, should I be worried that it is combustible? |

Rub N Buff can be found at art supply stores, at maybe JoAnn's fabrics, places like that. |

I bought some paint today - I think even though it may not match the original perfect, it would be better than the flaky cover as seen in the picture below. Now I need to find some of that "Rub & Buff". I went to Pep Boys, Kragen, and Auto Zone with no luck. Also did a quick google search with no luck... Anyone else know of a product that shines up the engine? Thanks! |

VHT and Plasticote both make crinkle paint. And I must agree it's darn near impossible to match the factory colors, as I've tried to no avail. Engines like my Testarossa's also have a silver/gray crinkle painted on the intake plenums and tubes. It's nearly IMPOSSIBLE to reproduce this finish. Resto shops I've talked to say it takes a gray or black crinkle followed by a satin silver "fog" coat to get "close" to the original appearance. I've contacted dealers asking (begging) for what the factory uses, but they say it's not available. They then put me in touch with restoration shops, who all say basically the same thing. It takes 3 or 4 tries to get it right, and they do this for a living. Doing the red crinkle paint isn't too difficult. But I've tried to repaint the intake system and ended up stripping it all back off in GREATLY FRUSTRATED state of mind. Now I'm simply going to paint the intakes in aluminum. Sorry to go off on a tangent here, but as you can see I needed to vent. Please don't let my rantings sway anyone from repainting their engines or other items, just beware in that it's not always as easy as it seems. |

Any of the red krinkle paints that I have found were not even close to being correct. The actually color on the Ferrari engine is a red-orange. Everything I have color tested is too dark, or too red, etc. |

The only red wrinkloe paint I know of is the VHT, SP204. It doesn't match the original red. Is there something that does? |

Hello- I recently purchased a 328 and the engine red paint could use some touching up - Anyone know how to get this done? Here is a pic of the engine :
