my engineering teacher used to do accident investigations. i forgot to bring this up to him when i heard about it. i'll mention it to him tomorrow. i wonder how they came up with 80mph? sounds like a cop on scene trying to sound like he knew what was happening.

from the article i read the crash happened near some condos. luckily no one else was injured.
...and some people wonder why bmw, ferrari, etc. offer factory sponsored driving schools.

HELL :-( :-( :-(
I've just seen the picture of the wrecked 360 Spider!

I've never ever thought that Ferrari were hot on passive safety - my worst fears confirmed...

Exactly, 80? When, probably slowed to 80 after it hit a few things and laid about 1000' of rubber and then it was down to 80. Just an opinion based on burnmarks from re-entry.

Interesting point. Apparently neither was wearing their seatbelt, but what if they had been? Seatbelts firmly attached in the buckles, wrapped around driver and passenger then the rear bulkhead which harnesses the belts gets ripped off the car. That can't have a good outcome to the passengers.

Important things, good and bad:

The seats are still attached, and the car broke behind the seats.

The seatbelts in this car attach to the rear bulkhead, which is gone.

Mark, I think that the car breaking in two is part of the car's build - I'm not 100% sure about the 360 but I know some of the midengined cars are assembled with a frame around the cockpit and one around the engine bay - this car looks like it might have ripped at that 'seam.'

That said, better the engine snap off sideways than crush the cabin.

Maybe some of the lawyers here who have done accident work before (if any here have done some for that matter) or anyone else who knows where to get info on skid and relative speeds could elaborate of what a "likely" speed prior to the accident may have been. I looked it up online and it's too much work to calculate. But....I did find this little tidbit.......

The average human will be able to excrete 5 inches of stool per second in a highly excited or frightened state, e.g. "I'm gonna die." Divide the length of the "skid mark" by 5 inches and you know the time span between when the decedent was aware that he was about to die and the actual impact.

i hope they at least lose their licenses. this doesn't look like an 8-lane highway --- they deserve some severe legal punishment. that's quite irresponsible.

The more details that come to light, the more is sounds like they were going closer to 180, rather than just 80...

i hope they get well.

What a waste of a beautiful machine! These frickin goons get a little cash in their pockets and they think that transforms them into some sort of invincible gods. Disrespect the car's limits and it's gonna bite back!

I just read that there were skidmarks about 100 feet long "before" the area where they exited the road at an estimated 80 mph.

Ergo.....slowing down from something much faster, intentionally or otherwise.

Gawd.....I remember the day Tim Horton died in his Pantera back in 74.

me too, mitch. as a 355 spider owner, i can tell you that wasn't a happy picture to see!

eventually we'll find out more accurately how fast he was going when the police investigation gets leaked or released. i seriously doubt it was something around 80.

doody.

ps: you don't think that'll buff right out alan? :-)

"Sounds like he will need the services of our own Franklin Parker."

Yeah but Frank will confuse the hell out of people because he will keep referring to the car as a Dino. "the dino is question"... "the said dino"..."he was allegedly going over 80 in his dino" etc.

apparently he can go to jail for several years for this in GA. There is a law about serious motor vehical accidents where people are injured. Sounds like he will need the services of our own Franklin Parker.

I totally think he was going WELL over 100 to cause that catastrophic damage to a Ferrari. Ferraris are among the best made and strongest cars ever. 80 mph would not do that much damage to a brand new car.

I'm with Ron, that looks like more than 80 mph to me, but then I'm used to bending steel frames and panels.

Any of you new car guys can comment on aluminum vs. steel?

Being a hockey fan I watched the Sports news and this was one of the main subject on the sports chanels. It was a black 360 spider with modular wheels and fender shields.

You can see the driver's side headlight is clear though, not a pop up from a 355. Also the inside has the aluminum trim pieces of a 360. I think these are the optional 360 wheels.

Yeah ! I heard about this in a radio morning talk show.. I was just going to start a thread on this...

I can't believe a car can split in half like that if they were "really" doing 80mph.....
