So don't buy it. There's lots of cars for sale. But a car sitting on that dude's lot isn't going to pay anyone's salary. You've got ALL the power. If you're uncomfortable, walk. |

A PPI benefits the dealer as much as the client (avoiding unknown land-mines). Also, my experience has been that previous Ferrari owners, for the most part, are MORE than willing to talk about their previous cars (they remain attached to the cars, even after they've sold them). The seller might have said, "Allow me to contact the previous owner and see if he's willing to speak with you". |

I wasn't expecting the previous owner phone number. I just asked if he could contact them, or could he ask them to contact me so I could ask him about the car. Also to verify the 1-owner comments. I'm not out to slam anyone, I just didn't understand the salesmen's attitude about the car. It's not an F-40 for crying out loud. The PPI thing really made me question him as well. I mean, people have Honda's checked by a mechanic before they buy them, and if he's been "in the business for 52-years" you'd think he would expect a knowledgable customer to request an inspection of the car. |

fwiw, "can you put me in touch with the previous owner if necessary?" is one of the questions on my "checklist" when shopping for a new-to-me f-car. most of the dealers i've ever talked to were happy to make efforts to do that. if you really want to talk to the PO, let the dealership set that connection up and see what happens. no guarantees of course, but fwiw i've rarely had a salesguy say "NFW" or anything like that. even if they got the car at wholesale, they can trace stuff back. you ought to have a good reason beyond chit chat, of course ;-) as a PO i'd be more than happy to discuss my PO cars with the current dealer owner if they had a serious question. i would not be happy about them giving out my contact information haphazardly though. doody. |

I usually tell customers just to slip the bank draft under the door when I am closed. Why bother going in to meet them ? Martin's comments can speak for me on this one. |

Sean, here is the other side and although I agree with you on most of the points, some can be misleading: Not having the records is a plausable thing and they may be coming. If you are interested I would put a deposit (as long as the rest checks out) and consume the transaction once the records arrived. If they don't then don't buy the car or discount it. I have a MOndial in my warehouse and the records are still with the owner. I can get them but I do not have them, yet. The sales man might really not know if the car needed new belts. Again, this is something you find out with the records. Usually you do not contact the previous owner, even though it may be a one owner car, you could have gotten the car in a dealer trade. I do it all the time. Unusual to contact the previous owner. I did it once on the fibreglass 308 to find out more about the car. They actually called me back 1/2 year later. In all the salesman could have handled the situation much different. He could have explained why he does not have the records, why the belts are not done etc. It is not the way I do business but then that is not the way most exotic car dealers do business in the first place.

Maybe when they see you in nice clothes and a nice watch they'll see you're actually serious You should fly out there and talk to them in person. |

Sean, sounds like they really don't want to sell you that 308! IMHO you can translate that as 1 if they wont speak to the previous (and only) owner would they pass you the details, or does it really have 15 owners who havent registered it, besides we got it at auction 2 years after the prevous owner sold it, why do you think we have no records. 2. "we do not have all the records" or we dont have any records but somebody with a PC and photoshop is forging them now! 3. Our mechanic had a look at the car as he parked up this morning and hasnt been seen since 4. we didnt put new belts on it as our mechanic is still missing, besides do you know how much that costs! 5. the paint and leather may be great, but they've only been done since it was wrecked last month 6. we throw mechanics out cause were scared of em! 7. we don't sell cars to people who have to work during the week Don't walk away from this place run There are plenty of dealers on this little planet who will sell you a 3X8 and understand that you want to check it out before you buy.

I called about a 308GTB in St.Louis today and these are the answers I got to my questions. See if you can guess what I asked... We never, and no good dealer would ever, contact a previous owner about a car. (1-owner car ?? ) We do not have all the records but we are getting them. OUR mechanic inspected the car and if it needs to be done, we'll fix it. He's been on our staff for 20-years We did not put new belts on it so it probably does not need them. The paint and leather are in excellent condition. Has the tool roll, jack and the one book (Uhm, I thought their was two books for the 308?). We sell our cars based on reputation. We've been in business for 52 years and were one of the first to open and exotic car shop in the U.S. I've had mechanics come in here before and I usually throw them out because they generally don't know what they are doing. We're open M-F 8 to 5. If you want to come Saturday, you'll need a cashiers check in hand and be ready to buy the car. |
