I think it was actually AMD who pushed for the laptop idea. They are secondary sponsors of the team, along with sponsoring the Ferrari Challenge series. Even the laptop uses AMD's Mobile Athlon XPs (which is not as popular as the mobile Pentium 4s).

Personally, I wouldn't buy it (rather get a Compaq or HP), but if someone gave it to me as a gift, who am I to decline?

Aw crap, what a pity ACER is making it.

If only a good laptop maker (Sony VAIO, or IBM) was producing it, I might actually sap up and get one.

Actually, a Ferrari branded new-gen iBook would look sweet as hell, and Apple would do it right too.

Best!
Ben.

>>MSRP plus ?<<

If the computer maker (Acer) is crap, then you'd have to be a memorabilia collector or a dunce of sorts to pay over MSRP for this thing.

I lost interest the second someone mentioned Acer is "known" to make crappy computers.

Now if this were an IBM, I'd be a sap and pay over for it.

Cheers

"It's not a REAL Ferrari laptop unless it's got a 12 gig hard drive, right Frank...?"

Is that 2 "6 G drives" side by side on a common bus (F12) or are the 2 drives angles with respect to each other (V12)?

i seriously doubt that this was ferrari's idea. acer signed up as an F1 sponsor presumably, and as part of those negotiations they generated a laundry list of things they wanted to do with the brand, including a, drum roll please, branded laptop.

it's just part of the give and take of sponsorship money. you can blame ferrari if you like, but without the hundreds of millions in sponsorship each year, the SF wouldn't be what it is, for sure.

it's just mundane commerce. don't get your panties in a knot ;-)

doody.

Didn't know Acers sucked so badly.

Maybe I'll have a carbon fiber shell fitted to whatever laptop I get and put a sticker on it.

Just so you all know:

If the computer goes down, expect to pay 10 times what you would pay to fix any other computer.

Also keep in mind that every six months or 300 hours of use, you MUST perform maintenance in the neighborhood of $500, which includes a complete disassembly of the chassis and removal of the CPU.

Finally, make sure you get one from the factory, or else you might have to buy one from an owner, who will more than likely charge you a %200 premium for the luxury of owning it.

Have fun!

I agree with everyone on here about the issue of their trademark. How desprate is Ferrari for extra cash? Allowing a not so great computer company to slap their name all over the laptop is stupid.

However, it does looks cool as hell.

Ok, I'll just get a Dell & place a Scuderia decal on it. Simple as that.

Thanks for the info.

Acer = Crap IMHO

Have had laptop/transportable dating back to the Osborne (dual 5.25 drives and amber screen). Then there was the Tandy, AST, Toshiba, Compaq... and other i have forgotten about.

Dude, get a Dell.

Enjoy the Drive,

Steven R. Rochlin

PS: Did BBS for Heathkit Electronics back in 1984 and was at the Atlanta computer labs in the mid 70's when we used 80-line punch cards.

I'm with Tillman. Actually I did this a while ago: My old laptop didn't look too good any more, lots of bruises and scratches from travel. So I masked off the keyboard and monitor and spray painted it red. Added a horsey sticker and voila!

Works great, but you need to add a protective clear coat afterwards or the scratches will be visible. I have to redo mine soon.

I'm with Ken. Acer makes junk. If you really want this look get a decent laptop and some red paint.

Another example of Ferrari diluting there trademark. My experience with Acer is that they are crap compared to competitors like Dell.

Under the surface decorated with the Ferrari emblem AMDs Mobile-Athlon-XP-2500+-Prozessor, 512 MByte GDR RAM, hide themselves a 60-GByte-Festplatte, a Radeon-9200-Grafik with 128 MByte memory as well as a DVD burner, which support plus and minus formats.

The Notebook with 15-Zoll-Display controlled both W-LAN and Bluetooth and possesses a 4in1-Kartenleser beside FireWire and USB-2.0-Anschluessen also. Acer - since February a "Official Supplier" the Scuderia Ferrari - supplies the Italian Formel-1-Team with Notebooks, PC, servers and monitors.

Computer producer Acer Inc. is an official supplier to Scuderia Ferrari. They will release a new laptop in mid october, computer releases are not normally what I pay too much attention to but this laptop may be more interessting. The rumours goes that it will be bright red and have the yellow S.F. emblem incl. the prancing horse, it will have top specifications, integr. WiFi, DVD, 15" screen bla bla bla. Exotic material (carbon fiber?) casing was mentioned but uncertain.
It will be a limmited edition model produced in one batch only.

Being sick and tired of years with Dell grey and Compaq black I ordered one on the spot and will have it by the end of the month, but since Ferrari is involved I'll be happy if I have it by the end of the year !

Hmm, wonder if a spesial order in blue nart on nero with carta da zucchereo piping would be accepted?
