fyi - this is the subject of TSB issued early this year. the engine mounts were substantially redesigned for the 550 and 456. the new design looks 10X smarter than the old design. no recall, but a known and documented problem. doody. |

Doddy, this happened to mine as well, just after the warranty expired. There are 4 mounts, and 2 of mine went as well. Pretty amazing for a car with (at the time) well under 15,000 miles... I hear it is a well-known problem at Ferrari, but, of course, no recall...and you're screwed if you're out of our wonderful 2 year warranties. Turns out FNA actually fixed mine, but they didn't have to... |

None so far at 40,000 miles. I will have it checked out next week as I need the oil changes.

# REPLACED: two MILEAGE: 6,750 on the clock AGE: just over four years in service (51 months?). GENERAL USAGE: the second owner didn't put many miles on it over a roughly two year period (garage queen). but the first owner did and i do drive it as regularly as one can in new england. TRACK USAGE: to the best of my knowledge, and as was represented to me by the seller, the car has never been tracked. clearly to me this doesn't smell like a "well engineered" part, to say the least. doody. |

can someone first off clarify whether there are two or four engine mounts on the 550? the weird noise problem i reported here back on 08/26 appears to have been fixed. the culprit was a failed motor mount. i will try to post pictures (two replaced), but the failure is rather spectacular given what the part is expected to do. the rubber basically failed, apparently slowly. in retrospect the motor mount failure fits perfectly with the symptoms i encountered, though dianosing the actual problem was, shall we, say, far from painless! note that this isn't an expensive part to replace. the mounts are on the order of $100 a pop and you don't have to remove the engine - just loosen everything enough to boost it and get clearance. it ain't free, but it ain't no gearbox catastrophe either. so the survey is as follows: how many 550 owners here have in fact had motor mounts replaced? how many? at what sort of mileage, and with what sort of history of use of your car? it'd be interesting to see if there's some discernable pattern(s) here. certainly anybody looking to buy a 550 should include this in their PPI list! i know of at least three of us here who've had failures. please post details. does the 456 share this engine mount setup? do they fail similarly? doody. |
