Greg, I suppose he could take a picture of himself with no car in the background and no title in his hand. :-)

Matt, sorry to hear about the car.

Ken,
If you followed the entire thread, Matt said they recommended a complete engine rebuild, plus rebuild the rear brakes, and something with the radiator fans....thus $12K.

How can a head gasket for a 308 cost $12K to replace? That is the cost of an entire rebuild.

Good to hear about the air. I did change jobs in Aug and I forgot to get my e-mail addresses and phone numbers off the server and my old cell phone before I left. Where can I reach you?

Matt

DES has my e-mail address. I will ask him to e-mail it to you

Matt, yeah, it was there for almost 3 weeks. Much of the delay was caused by coordinating with and getting the costs approved by the dealer.

I am happy to say though that he came through with a complete reimbursement of the cost.

Did you move? I heard you might not be living in Santa Clarita anymore.

Sunny,

I wanted the a car that would be reliable (not that the Ferrari was not) and that could handle a long commute. I am very pleased. 4 seats are a bonus. It drives like a 2 seater.

Jordan,

I think the head problem developed on the way to Vegas over the summer. DES can confirm that the water and oil temps were way up on that trip.

It has not been running right since.

Hey. I'm trying to keep someone from getting screwed. I did not want to sell it private party due to the issues it had. I would rather let the dealers handle it.

Jim,

Hey!

Fanatic,

The Rx-8 has a 1.3 liter engine. It has loads of power but the rotary makes bizarre noises.

Gary,

It could be that Galpin Mazda is selling the car on Consignment.

I contacted them and I was told that it was traded in but it does not have a head gasket leak, it runs perfect. He also told me that the info about the leak is wrong. He said he put several miles on this car and it has not heated up or anything. He also said that there was no water in the oil or vice-versa.
Sounds like bad news to me.
Thanks Matt for warning us on this car. I feel bad for the buyer who purchases it unknowingly.

You did hear the Mazda Rx8's were not putting out the horsepower that was advertised by mazda? Its true although i dont have the article right now. There are talks now to adjust horsepower claims from manufacturers to be within 2 percent of actual output.

Gary, interesting the dealer said its on consignment......I believe you the dealer said that, but I also believe Matt doesn't own the car......why would he come on here basically telling everyone not to buy it, if he still owned it....kind of shooting himself in the foot.
On another note, I love the RX-8 in PICTURES...I went to test drive one, kind of liked it....small engine...1.8L, but in Person the car looks BIG....a big fat rear end, (not in the good way!) :-) It kind of looks like a pregnant rollerskate in person.......IMHO.....GREAT INTERIOR THOUGH!

I see where you're coming from Matt K., but I personally like it. I don't know if it looks more like a open wheel hot rod with fenders or as I convinced myself a bad ass Euro touring car with fender flares. :-) Either way I think the perfect balance and unbelievable handling of the car won me over. Also at a very reasonable price. I'll be anxious to see what engine upgrades (turbo?) they do over the coming years. I would like to see 75-100 more hp in them.

I think this looks hot! I like the import look and so do the Asian girls. :-)

Rob...not to hijack this thread, but I just saw my first RX8 last week. To be honest, I thought it was butt ugly. As the wheels seem to be all the way out at the corners, it probably has decent handling, but were they smoking crack when they designed those front fenders?

Matt! Welcome back again. :-) What's it been like not viewing and posting on FC?

Good choice on the RX-8, I really want one, but can't afford it right now. My BMW is holding out, but at 145k miles, I don't know how much longer. Rotary Performance at www.rx7.com has already done some turbos and mods on the RX-8's. Might check them out.

I'm assuming the dealer didn't do any work for it except maybe detail it. Yet, they describe it as "THIS CAR IS SUPER TIGHT AND DRIVES PERFECT!!" and "IS NOT MUCH TO TELL ON THIS CAR, IT IS NICE! SO, I GUESS I WILL BE PICKY TO FIND SOMETHING WRONG. THERE IS A MINOR OIL LEAK (SHOW ME A FERRARI 308 THAT DOES NOT LEAK OIL)"

Yet from Matt we know:

"What's wrong with it....

Needs engine rebuild
Needs rear brakes rebuilt
Cooling fans (both) stopped working."

Gotta love it!

Greg,

Correct. I did not overheat but it came very close. It was at that time I decided to trade it in. He states a minor oil leak. That's B.S. It's huge. It leaks (flows is more like it) onto the exhaust. I did not know it was on ebay until this morning. Wade at Monaco Motors and Kavork Hazarian from Fine Auto Service worked on the cars. Wade was the one that diagnosed the bad head gaskets.

So it needs the engine removed to repair a head gasket and the auction states none of this. I assume they didn't fix it as you traded it 2 weeks ago. What happened to the car, overheated, ?.

I traded it in a couple of weeks ago to Galpin Mazda.

I needed a engine rebuild due to a head gasket leak.

I have a commute of 88 miles round trip and it could not make it anymore.

What's wrong with it....

Needs engine rebuild
Needs rear brakes rebuilt
Cooling fans (both) stopped working.

It was mine. Cal plate was RESTART. I am sure Wayne has checked on that already. I am having the plate reassigned to the rx-8

Wayne, your words, "He was becoming increasingly frustrated with the Ferrari ownership experience" seem to be familiar. First Ed Gault, then Nika, now Matt. Dare I suggest that many of us, owners and non-owners alike, are looking at the Ferrari experience through "rose colored glasses" and that when it comes RIGHT DOWN TO IT, we Ferrari enthusiasts are like the dog chasing the car: The chase is very exciting, but when we "catch the car" (nice pun), the experience can be disappointing, frustrating, and downright expensive?
