All this talk about wives made me think. Would you save your wife for the next guy? Then why save your car.

Hey Martin, can you give your wife my email address so I can be early for the garage sale? :-)

Rebuild along the way -- well of course but it will be one piece at a time. In 40 years few parts are going to be completely original and untouched. Why rebuild completely in one shot unless the whole thing breaks? The way you take care of it, just drive and fix as needed. The only thing to watch out for is rust -- get those knocked off to avoid rotting thru.

There is no "next guy" for my car! If I live 40 more years and drive 4500 miles per year=180000 miles plus its present 43K= 223,000 miles! I'm just trying to preserve it for myself. (do you think I'll need a rebuild along the way?)

When it comes to Ferrari and other exotics, it's the low mileage garage queen that seem to have the mechanical problems. I think many people do not realize that these cars must be driven to remain in optimum health (just like a human being). :)

It is a trophy for some people to have something that is new all the time. I agree with you that if you do not use something for what it was intended then you really do not have it. A perfect example is a Woman that keeps her jewelry in a safety deposit box instead of wearing it. I have one child and I told him that when I die that he can have what is left of what I have. I am going to do my best to wear it out before he gets it. Almost everything that I have ever been able to afford was worn out by someone else before I got it and I have to refurbish it to make it useable. I was born with nothing and still have most of it.

At the Italian Car Show yesterday I over heard a none Italian car owner talking with one of the Ferrari owners about his beautiful low mileage car. When the owner bragged about what low mileage his car had, the admirer responded with "why, are you saving it for the next guy ?". That statement speaks volumes. When we don't drive our ponies like they should we are in fact just saving the goodie out of the car for the next guy. No body wants that !
