Here's another option, just to make this process even more confusing for everyone.

I've ordered a Tubi with some of the baffles left out for my 512TR. I understand that this will give me sound that everyone wants without having to screw around taking out the cats.

The only problem is that the Tubi had to be special ordered from Italy and I've been waiting two months, hope it gets here ahead of the snow....Norm

My neighbor put a 3" Cat-back exhaust on his Ford F-150... and I thought my car was loud! Good, at least the other neighbors won't complain about me now. Sure its got the "American V-8" sound, but no where as nice as my car at 7500 RPM!

Billy's Testarossa with bypass pipes (not cats, etc) and a Borla is the most beautiful sounding road car I have ever heard, hands down. I might be like William though and just like loud cars, but when cruising around it seemed pretty fine and wasn't overwhelming or anything, just when you crank it up it gets real loud real quick. I think Tubi with bypass would be a good idea.

Jeffrey C. -- I do believe that (in theory) a few more horsepower would be available as you open up the exhaust, but I don't think that anyone could honestly tell the difference between 380 HP or 385 HP hauling 4000 lbs around (especially since it's usually mid-RPM torque that most defines how a car feels). IMHO, Ferrari did too good a job keeping the NVH down on TRs -- with the windows up and the stock US exhaust in place I'd have to constantly look at the tach to check RPM so the extra "noise" of the CAT configuration + the Tubi is a definite plus for me.

it definatley feels better, it sounds like what u want a Ferrari to sound like. Seat of the pants I would guess its a little quicker. I think she Must have picked up a few hp just cus she can exhale freer now

Steve - Thank you very much for the clarification. Believe it or not I had no idea that there was a distinction between the sets of cats. I think I will proceed in the exact manner you have outlined. The Tubi by itself first followed by replacing just the light-off cats. I do not drive the car often but imagine that no cats at all with the Tubi will likely get me into trouble where I live. They are pretty strict with the noise ordinace regulations.

Also, in following Michael's question ... is there a noticeable increase in power with these changes or does it just feel more powerful because it sounds louder? :-)

William, do you feel or notice a power increase with both cats off?

Jeffrey C. -- You maybe need to be more specific than "catalytic converters" as the US TRs have both light-off catalysts and catalytic converters. On my '91 TR I've been thru this exhaust configuration sequence:

1. US Version = light-off cats + cats + silencer = very quiet (as you know).

2. US Version w/Tubi = light-off cats + cats + Tubi = a little louder, but still rather tame (except at rather high RPM like #1).

3. CAT Version = bypass pipes + cats + Tubi = moderately loud (but still much quiter than bypass pipes + bypass pipes + Tubi)

I've been very happy with #3, and I think you'll be a little disappointed with the Tubi if you leave both the light-off cats and cats in place. I'd at least bypass the light-off cats, and if you want LOUD, then as William H commented, bypass them both.

PS It would be a little strange IMHO to replace the cats with bypass pipes but leave the light-off cats in place.

did the Tubi first & it sounded much better, then later I removed the cats & it got much louder :) Still sounds good. If u drive your car a lot, no cats may be too loud, but I love loud cars

William - Did you go straight to the Tubi and no cats or did you go with the Tubi first and then decide to go no cats later? If so, I would like to know how much difference the Tubi improved the sound over the factory exhaust. Thanks.

I have a 512TR with no cats & a tubi, its a lot louder with no cats, but I like my cars loud :)
The engine sounds like what u imagine a Ferrari should sound like when u go Tubi & no cats, Ive had lots of people compliment me on the sound

My TR is having it's first BIG service done and I have decided to install a Tubi at the same time. It didn't even occur to me to remove the catalytic converters but a friend suggested that I do it and that the resulting sound would be something akin to a F1 car.

1) Anyone have any experience with this?
2) Is there a dramatic sound difference between the stock exhaust and the Tubi and then the Tubi w/the cats and without?
3) Will it negatively affect the performance of the car by removing the cats (some cars need a minimal amount of back pressure or HP drops off).

Thanks!

Jeffrey
