I loaned my 308 to a friend when I was working in Chicago a few years back. I had only known him for 1/2 a year and we were working on the same project. I knew he was a car fanatic and this was my second ferrari so it was no big thing. I loaned him the car for 2 weeks and he was in heaven. I asked him if he wanted to borrow it, he did not ask me. He was a responsible person that had insurance to cover the car if anything happened. It's a good feeling to be able to share the joy of driving a ferrari. Who knows, maybe he will one day own a ferrari because of the fun he had driving mine. |

Just ready to buy a set of rear tires from tire rack. ($437-bridgestone potenza) A buddy offered to pay for them in exchange for a couple of days with the 308. I may take him up on it, as he allows me his 750i occasionally. Otherwise, it is my baby. |

I let a friend drive mine while I was in the car. He managed to do two 360 spins in the middle of a two lane highway when a truck full of migrant workers pulled out of a corn field in front of us. Fortunately we never left the road and he did pay for a new set of tires after i drove 120 miles home on flat spots. Never again after that. |

I let my dad drive it occasionally, mostly depending on how much he's helped me work on it prior to it. I hid the extra keys so there are no impromptu borrowings of the Fcar. He's got a little too much GM blood in him, I still have to show him how it's not the Vette. He's a really good driver though, the best I've ever seen. No one else I'm afraid. The people I would let drive are the ones that don't ask because they know how much I love the 308, anyone that asks has no chance in hell of ever getting behind the wheel. |

I would gladly loan my car to exactly 2 people. One of them is my dad, because he turned me loose with his cars when I was young and foolish. I wrecked a few of them. I also know he would never take it. I once had to force him to take my Jaguar instead of my Suburban because I needed to use the Suburban. He was visibly uncomfortable about being given the 'good' car. I can't imagine having a 'friend' that would even ASK me to borrow the car for a few days. If it happened, I'd just laugh at them. |

Ive only let my dad drive my car so far. My wife is just getting comfortable with a 5-speed, but shes not ready yet. I took my brother for a ride, but he didnt ask to drive it; he hasnt driven a manual tranmission in a long time. My close friends havent asked, because they know the offer has to come from me. I would let select friends or family members drive my car with me in it, but never, never, alone! |

The guy askes you to if he can use your car. Forget the fact that it is a Ferrari and gets mad at you when you say no! Its like the guy thinks he asked to borrow a book or CD or something small. He needs to get a clue. |

I appreciate all of your opinions and they are all very well said. I should let the person who asked to borrow my car read these comments told by Ferrari owners. This person got real sour about me not letting him borrow my car and now don't want to talk to me. Seems nowadays people call you only when they want something from you. This person drives a Honda, I told him if you've never driven a Ferrari I should be in the car with you to make sure you shift and clutch correctly but he said he wanted to drive it alone. Well, you know what happened then.... comment for the day " Friends don't ask friends to borrow their Ferrari " |

It's not that I wouldn't let someone drive the car with me in it. In fact, the first Ferrari I drove was on my wedding day. I was 21, and couldn't legally rent the Mondial. The owner of the rental shop had pitty on me and basically "loaned" me the car (which was his personal vehicle) for the week-end. Sure I had to give him a few hundred bucks, but two dreams came true that week-end. I'm so grateful that he did this for me, a total stranger. It's what kept the hope of owning a Ferrari alive within me. I will follow in his foot steps and example. I won't lend out my car, but I will give anyone a ride, instilling a dream and passion into someone else's heart. If all goes according to plan, it'll all start this spring! |

One of the things I enjoy is hearing how they can't believe how it handles and performs. My son has a late model Vette. When he drove my GTS he said he couldn't believe the difference of handling and secure feeling he had driving the Ferrari. Like nothing he has ever driven before. We get a bit used to the feel and after a while we come to accept what great handling capabilities these cars have. Let some else drive it for the first time and they are simply blown away. |

I absolutely love to share my Ferrari with others especially ones who have only heard of the make. They think its so cool and I get pleasure in their enjoyment. For many to see or ride in a Ferrari is a once in a lifetime thing and I like giving them this opportunity. I will let a select few drive briefly with me as passenger. But let it out of my hands unsupervised, HELL NO, NEVER EVER EVER! I think it's interesting that the people who really dont know Ferrari want to drive it, but those that are car guys dont want to drive it even if offered to them. |

I will only let a select few people drive my car and it'll happen with me in the passenger's seat. I have no reservations letting my friend Sean drive my car (with me in it), because he is a far better driver than me (from his racing experience) and helped me so many times in the past (tuning my Webers, etc...). A couple of other close friends is the limit (again, always with me in it). I'll gladly throw the keys to anyone though... if they throw back their 328/348/355/360/TR.... keys in return! |

I would never consider asking to drive someone's car without them in the passenger seat. In fact, when I drove a 308 a client owns he was telling me to stop babying it so much and rev it higher before shifting. Then again, I regularly check this site and I don't even have a Ferrari. Maybe I have a different outlook on cars than the average person. |

Gotta agree with what a lot of the people here are saying -- it is one thing to let someone drive your car, another to let someone take your car. I let people drive my car. I'm in the passenger's seat, and I know where the handbrake and shift knobs are. There a fewer than a handful of people I would let take my car. I, too, find it rude of a person ask to take another's pride and joy, Ferrari or not, for 'a day'. |

I've let a very few close friends drive my gt4 under close and paranoid supervision and after instruction and practice in the vacant park and ride lot. I am particularly glad I was able to have my father drive it (and he did so skillfully and carefully) when I took it to So. Cal. years ago, especially because he suddenly passed away several months later. When I get it back together, I'm going to have to watch my daughter like a hawk. --tim d |

Even the most sane people will act unpredictably around a Ferrari. It's best to keep them away from the driver's seat. |

Two problems... 1. Ferraris are not like other cars. New Ferrari drivers need to be checked out before launching out on the open road. They sit very low to the ground, they need to be warmed up before high revs, they are wider than other cars, the emergency brake can be down with the brake on, etc. etc. The only people who drive my cars are VERY trusted friends from our Ferrari club. Even then, most would never ask. When I have driven someone else's Ferrari it has been to take it to a show for them, or with them as a passenger. 2. Non-Ferrari people tend to look at the chance to drive a Ferrari as a once in a lifetime opportunity. And because of that, when the chance does come along they try and "make it count". Remember Ferris Buehler? In every nice friend their is a crazy just waiting to see what your car will do. Just stick to the old "my insurance company doesn't allow anyone else to drive it" story. That will usually put an end to it. |

Hell NO!!! My wife even says she won't ask. She doesn't want to drive it, afraid of what might happen. If my wife won't drive it, surely my friends won't be allowed to either. |

As the soon to be former owner of Mondial T 92465 I would recommend not allowing others to drive your car. But not for the reason you might think... Yes, it sucks (can I say sucks Rob? I hope so, if not, please substitute s&cks for all previous and future sucks in this message) to have your car totaled by an unqualified driver when you weren't even there to put a stop to it, even if you told them what not to do to avoid said totaling. And it sucks to pick up your wife in the emergency room, especially knowing the driver was "just fine" thank you. But mostly, it sucks in the state of Washington to have rules that say YOUR INSURANCE COVERS DAMAGE if and when a driver you permit has totaled your car. Doesn't matter if the driver was drunk, stupid or otherwise incapacitated - your insurance will cover the damage. Happy story is that my insurance said, "not a problem, here is your money, go in peace." Let someone drive your car again and need to file a claim...you will be dropped. Of course, your state may be different... |

Absolutely out of the question. I'll give rides to friends, and my fiancee has driven...once, but 99.99% of the people on this planet don't have the respect and appreciation for my 308 or any Ferrari that I (we) do. However, if you feel pressed or obligated to, for whatever reason, have them lay a cashiers check for $6000.00 on your kitchen table that is returned when your Ferrari is returned from the Ferrari dealership with a clean bill of health! |

You know, 99% of my friends know that I don't let anyone drive my Ferrari...so they don't ask. I feel uncomfortable telling someone no when they do ask to drive it. I let my brother drive the 308 once, with me in the passenger seat. Otherwise, no one is allowed to drive the Ferrari. And no one will EVER borrow my car for a day, or even a minute. I know how I drive rental cars, and thats about the same thing. If someone says I won't speed or drive fast in your borrowed Ferrari, they are lying to your face. |

Although I don't own a Ferrari (yet), I feel that that is relatively rude of your new friend to ask to barrow your car. I dont let anyone borrow my Volvo for insurance reasons. God forbid he loses control and crashes, he can sue you for faulty maintenance or something of that nature. On the other hand, I can see myself- in 10 years (when I am 26) letting my old friends drive my 355 spider around the block. |

happy to let my friends borrow my SUV for a day to haul stuff around, but loaning out an expensive car for "a day" is a pretty big request to make of someone. i let people take my 911 TT out for a spin now and then, but i'd never let someone take it "for a day". and i discourage them mightily from taking it out if they don't feel they could REPLACE it if they screw up. it's one thing to be generous with your toys, it's another to get financially screwed when something goes awry. my two pennies. doody |
