Remember when buying a Ferrari:

Rule # 1

1. Research, find the right one, negotiate the best price & buy it, particularly at the low $ end of the the ferrari model market.

And Rule # 2

2. If you have doubts and reservations, don't do it, move on.

And Rule # 3

3. Ask others for advice and inspections and lsten to the recommendations, you can justify anything to your self but it doesn't mean you are right.

If you simply negotiate a lower price because it is in average condition has high miles and poor records then you will usually spend big later, usually more than you would save.

If you want to buy a less desirable example then do not trick yourself into beleiving that it will be fine and that you can start using it right away. Buy it, park it, examine it, fix it then drive it.

Search these archives for more pre-purchase info. There is no substitution for good research.

Newt, for what it's worth, there is an 87 Mondial Cab Red/Tan 41k miles on the FerrariAds section of this website. Not sure if the price is right (other Mondial Cab owners could probably tell you...), but he'll probably be willing to negotiate.

Newt,

I bought an 86 Mondial Cabriolet with 23,000 miles for $28k. I know what the shopping feeling is and you just want the car now. But Mondials are not as sparse as you might think.

By the way, does anyone know about how much an engine rebuild runs for a car like this and what it involves?

I also agree on the price. That seems very high. I would expect a Convertible at that price and with that milage. COntinue looking.

As I posted before, I would not be discouraged by the miles. Means the car was driven as it should have been. I would even give it a point more just for that than having a 15 year old car with 20K Miles. just make sure to calculate the engine rebuild into it when you buy these high miles cars.

Does that mean the car had nothing but a 30K service but has 86K miles?

I would pass if the 30K has already been done. Hard to verify if its been done properly. If not done deduct at least 5,000 and do the 30K yourself with your mechanic.

Seems a little on the hige side price wise, especially with the milage. Would the current owner do the 30k service or has it been done. See the other posts about work not being done despite records. IMHO I would think the car should be priced around 23-25k but the milage would still concern me, has the engine been rebuilt - if not plan on doing at least the top end in the next 20k. As a point of comparison I got my 86 mondial cab with a 30k service and 30k miles for close to what you plan on paying - it also has a few nics here and there but I would say it is good to very good condition. The engine bay was clean and the interior in good shape. This was also before sept 11.

Well, I found a '86 Mondial 3.2 coupe, nice car, a few little nics and bumps in the paint, trunk latch does not work, needs rear tires, etc... I am nervous with the 86,000 miles, and very little service records. I trying not to fall in the "I want syndrom" Mondials 3.2s seem hard find. Any thoughts?

Steve, asking price is 28,000 with a 30K service
the guy does restoration work on exotics.
Thanks!
