Brian: They set up a special track, it's southwest of the original track, up on the hill. For a Kart track its fast, using two less teeth on the rear sprocket. I would estimate top speed in 5th at about 60 - 70 mph. I didn't race, I'm just getting into the driving skills area. When I started, everyone was passing me, at the end of the day, there was only one or two guys that I couldn't pass. All of them were 20 years younger than me. What made it interesting is that the AFM was also running that day, and my rider, Jeff Hagen, was running in the top 10. When he was running, I'd walk down to the track to watch him. I haven't run the new track, but a lot of people were there getting ready for the AMA national which is coming up next month. Not a bad day. Art |

So, how did you do Art? Do you run the full course, shame that NASCRAP spoiled the true road course, it was spectacular. |

...actually thinking of it, my dentist is almost the same. He is a huge Italy fan and we always talk about Italy and Ferrari when I am there. He knows Pavarotti and had dinner with some family that was hooked up deep into Ferrari racing in the early days. He told me the name but I can't remember sh*t anymore since I turned 30.

Speeking of the F1 race at Indy. Man oh man this is a small world, get this. I was at the Dentist office getting work done. After getting the shot my Dentist and I where chatting about my car. He made a comment that he noticed how much I liked cars, as I had my nose in the current issue of Road & Track while he was giving me the shot, and said I should get in to racing. I said that is something I would like to do. He then told me that the brother of one of his friends races in F1. Now I'm thinking either he is lying, or his friends brother is involed at some lower level? Being that my Dentist is from Brazil, I start thinking no way. I then asked "Your friend races?" and he said, "No his brother, but I haven't seen them in a while we used to go to school together". Okay I figured I would call his bluff. So I asked "What is your friends brothers name?".......... he then said "Rubens". No freeking way, my Dentist knows Rubens Barrichello. So I asked him if he could hook me up with tickets to the race at Indy. He said he didn't know cause it had been a while since they had talked to each other. Oh how bad a## would that be to go to the F1 race at Indy with Ferrari credentials!!!! |

Art, Sorry you will not be able to make FCA-LA. However, I was at Indy last year, with the A36. It took longer to drive to the airport than to fly home. Don't forget you need an IFR arrival and departure reservation for Indy. It was great to taxi out behind all the Lears and Challengers. Of course, since it was right after the 11th, they made us ride out to the plane in a van with a escort. Of course, he just dropped us off and went on his merry way. I remember looking across the tarmac at Indy Int'l terminal and thinking there was nothing from keeping me walking over there to any of those commercial airliners. As I said in my message before, airport security is still a joke. Good luck with you trial. We'll miss you in LA. Stephen |

Art, Just goes to show how much we have in common. I'm on Chris Parr's 80cc shifter team, Team Porcupine (you know, just a bunch of pricks). We are racing in two weeks in St. Louis at Gateway. It's pretty fun, half on the infield, half on the Nascar oval. I'm the rookie in the bunch, but just signed up for Skip Barber in May at Laguna Seca. The A36 is a great airplane here in the midwest. I file almost every trip at 7-9k. I had a hot prop installed, but rarely pick up more than a little rime. If you are going to be in LA for the FCA I would love to get together and talk "shop". GIVEN WHERE YOU LIVE, YOU PROBABLY DON'T NEED ANY MORE PLANE THATN WHAT YOU HAVE, OTHER THAN TIME CONSTRAINS. UNFORTUNATELY (OR FORTUNATELY) I LIVE WHERE THERE ARE MOUNTAINS, AND OCCASSIONALY, I GET ICE, ETC. THE BARON CAN DEAL WITH THE ICE, AND THAT IS THE REASON THE BONANZA GOT TRADED IN ON THE BARON. THE TRIP WAS COMING BACK FROM LA, 10K WITH FORECASTED ICE AT 11K. WRONG: MINUS 2 AND STUCK IN ICE (LAKE HUGHES TO SHAFTER, ABOUT 50 MILES, OR 20 MINUTES IN THE ICE). INDICATED GOT TO 100 AND I'M USRE THAT I HAD ABSOLUTELY NO A-HOLE. WHEN I GOT ON THE GROUND, I DECIDED TO BUY SOMETHING THAT WOULD DEAL WITH A LITTLE MORE WEATHER, I BOUGHT THE BARON. JUST GOT BACK FROM THE 125 SHIFTER DRIVE TODAY. TOM DYER, THE KID THAT IS MAKING SURE I KNOW HOW TO DRIVE IT CALLS IT THE GYM ON WHEELS, AND BOY IS HE RIGHT. ART |

Well, this is one way to keep this thread going... I doubt any of us would want to do away with security, but it needs to be uniform and professional. We have a director of Homeland Security. How do you think Tom Ridge feels about this? Do you think homeland security should have their own police force? How would that affect States sovernity? |

The new "security" procedures are a joke. A month after 911, my wife and I flew with the usual early arrival etc. We checked our luggage and then hung out at the airport for hours. We finally flew out and arrived home. Our baggage had flown on an earlier flight. There it was waiting unattended at the airport. This happened during a time of hightened security. Airline security is a joke and don't get me started on the security checks at public venues. OK now I'm started. What is the deal with searching my wifes purse before we can go into a public show? I went to a hot rod show recently and they were pawing through every woman's purse. So, are hot rod shows major terrorist targets? Judging from some of the characters that I saw, I would imaging that a number of the rougher looking guys were armed. I notice these guys weren't searched. It is a small distance between walking into a public show and walking down the street. It is an illegal search the way I see it. I am willing to take the risk of a terrorist attack at a hot rod show over the violation of my rights as a citizen. Especially when the search is so obviously of no security value. End of rant |

Art, You are right on the money concerning general aviation. Since Sept. 11th my airplane is worth it's weight in gold. This trip came up at the last minute. We have chartered King Air's before, but it just seemed so easy to book this flight on-line and run up to the airport. I used to tell people that, for flight less than 500 miles, my Bonanza would beat the airlines every time. Now, with the new security, I think it's more like 1000 miles. My plane is 10 minutes from the house. Almost every airport we go to will meet us on the ramp with the rental car (try that with the airlines). The best part of general aviation though, is that guys like me, with my little ole 1995 Bonanza, get the same treatment as the boys in the $20M jets. |

Steve: I flew my airplane to England in 99. Times I needed my passport: 0. My wife and I went to Mexico in 11/01, right after 9/11. Times I needed my passport: 0, times someone looked at the plane: 0. It has become more cost effective to use our plane than to travel by commercial airlines, given the idiots running the show. Our government's position here is that they don't want to be embarassed, therefore, your time, money, etc. are not an issue. The whole issue of searching the passengers has become a joke: they have uneducated idiots doing the searchs, and if they find something suspicious, they shut down the entire airport (LAX) for example. There are alternatives to commercial airlines: I have gotten the name, but there are travel services that will book you into a private jet on the return flight, for about the cost of a 1st class ticket. Well worth the money for the travel.

Ralph, I totally agree with what you are saying. The problem is not that any of us object to greater security, the problem is that it is not consistant, and often performed by people I would not want to wash my car, let alone search for terrorists. As an example, I had a random check luggage search done at Cleveland Hopkins about one month ago. The inspector had headphones on and was singing as he gave my bag a few pokes and prods. I complained to his supervisor that this type of unprofessional conduct is why people are so upset with the new rules. I have also heard from several friends with "very" attractive wives, that they seem to get padded down a little too often. Edward, I don't know what a terrorist looks like. I have yet to see one, six years old, with pony tails and a power puff girls backpack. The process should be more like US customs. At least the agents are trained to spot suspecious behavior, instead of just doing whatever the computer tells these guards to do. |

Stephan; In January, a very close friend took me to the Cavalino classic in West Palm beach for my birthday. He bought the tickets through travelocity a couple of days before the flight. So we get to the airport 2 hrs early and waited like everyone else. After showing the person at the counter our printed itinerary we were given our ticket to palm,(we had no checked luggage) now the day we were flying was my birthday and a couple of days before I had renewed my DL and had only a paper temp DL so I took my passport also. After getting through the first security checkpoint the attendant at the gate scanned my ticket and said step over here.I figured it was a "random" search. After the same type of search as you described to your family I was allowed to board. Upon returning with the same checkin procedure, At the first check point (with no alarms)I was asked to "step over here" and searched. After going through my wallet and carry on we proceeded to the gate. After waiting it out they scanned my ticket and I was asked to "step over here" (now I was Pi__ed). After three "kids" at a table right in front of the gate searched my bag the people boarding the plane had to walk around my outstreched arms (humiliating)And they were commenting about the Ferrari show program and laughing. when I picked up my bag and jacket I was asked to remove my shoes. Needless to say I fummed all the way to Boston. I called Delta the minute I got home and the next day I talked to the head of security at JFK and he told me "it was not Random" I was a "Selectee" He could not tell me the criteria but it could have been two men traveling alone with no checked luggage, my last name (100% Italian) although it dosen't look it. Does ATTA ring a bell. Anyway my point to all of this is who gets to make the decision of profiling me the person behind the counter or a computer and more important does it stay with me as in some international database. I guess I will find out 4/6 as I am flying to Aruba. My wife and friends think I'm over reacting I don't think so. |

Just had to tell this story... I took my family to the airport this morning. They're getting a jump start on Easter, and then I'll fly down to Atlanta and pick them up in my plane. Anyway, since they had purchased one way tickets, the computer put them in the "profile" list for extra security. Now, Kansas City Intl. airport was really not designed with security in mind, so the gate area is only separated from the lobby by a single glass wall. The point of all this is that it took at least 45 minutes for my wife and daughters, age 6 & 12 to get through security. First, the behind the curtain inspection of checked luggage (which happens whenever you buy at the last minute or go one-way), followed by inspecting all carry on luggage 3 times before boarding, taking off shoes and checking for explosive residue. I know, I know, this is what we all have to expect in the post Sept. 11th world. And I have no problem with all the extra security. But just picture in your mind the scene as my two little girls were told to spread their arms and legs as one guard used a handheld metal detector on them, and another searched their Power Puff Girls backpacks. I wanted to say to the guards, "my 6 year old is a terror (especially when told to clean her room), but do you really think she's a terrorist?" My only point with this is that it seems to me, after today, that the security guards really are just robots. If the computer says "look", they look. Makes you wonder what might be getting through. Anyone else have an interesting airport experience? |

Well it has slowed down for the moment. On a different twist, has anyone ever had the shifter break on them. Well yesterday I had that very thing happen. I was getting on it a little bit and went to shift into 2nd gear, when SNAP! The handle came off almost at the shift gate. NO I wasn't speed shifting, actually it didn't even get into 2nd before it broke off. Lucky for me I was only about two blocks from my house. I had to put-put it home in 1st gear. It sucks big time. |

This thread reminds me of the old cartoon of the mouse and the cat drinking the "grow formula". The one where they keep snatching the drink from each other and drink it to keep get bigger than the other. We have turned this tread into that. Hahaha. |

I think that this thread is the longer by at least 3xs the next. As to the question, I think we need to think about where we are going, since 500 in probably in the close future. |

Go back to high school?! You have got to be kidding. Yes high school was fun, and even college, but no way would I go back. Actually I'm having the best time of my life right now. I now have the Ferrari I was day dreaming about back then. I have taken, and can take nice vacations, back then I couldn't afford it. My job is just great, oh yeah I never got into detail about that. Well I work in television and my official title is a Master Control Technical Director. I started out at a city college taking Film and Video production classes. We had to do 2 hours of lab a week. There was a job posting in the student services for a master control operator in the college t.v. station. Ask the instructor if I could count that towards my lab hour, and he said yes. Got the job and found my nich. What we did was put on the tele-courses. The ones you watch and then send in your test at the end of the week. Those and the student projects. After that did some internships at a local UPN television station and a radio station. Then life kicked in, got married had kids, and left school to make money to raise my family. Went back to school after changing majors from film & video production to character animation. Then changing schools from a city college to an expensive private school tried to continue my education full time, while working full time. This was extreamly hard, and didn't work out. So I dropped out of college again. Word of advise do not change majors. I have enough college units for a B.A. but they are split up into the two different majors. So after only working full time for about a year, I didn't feel like I was going anywhere. Changed jobs and got my break. A co-worker was production manager at the UPN t.v. station I had interned at and they needed a master control operator. What Master control does is put on every single thing you see on the t.v. at home. The news, sports, shows, comercials, movies everything in addition to recording the promo spots, commercials, and satellite down link feeds. In a nut shell if we goof your television goes black. So I got the job, but with bad timing the station was going bankrupt. So I left after a few months. After working outside the industry for a while I quit my job, determined to get back in. Made some calls and was back working at an ABC and FOX station at the same time. The FOX station was in the same facilities, and decided to build their own station. So I left with the FOX station and was the Chief Operator/Master Control Supervisor for them. Down the road asked for a raise and after waiting six months with nothing, started interviewing with companies in Los Angeles. Wouldn't get hired cause I was working full time. So I asked for more money again and gave a date. The date came and I gave my notice. Took a week off then made some calls, got interviewed and hired at a major television station in Hollywood as a Master Control Technical Director. I am still with them today. Oh yeah I almost forgot. With all the changes that I made, I did alot of praying asking GOD for help. |

Nice Stephen. Plus Tim, not to get too out of hand here, but in high school girl's a$$es are so much tighter. It was expected in HS. At college it's like a commodity. There are ones to be found, but you have to look a bit harder. As a whole I would say girls are more attractive at college though. |

The details of my life are quite inconsequential... NO PLEASE...TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF, ABOUT YOUR CHILDHOOD. Very well. Where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low-grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a 15 year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical, summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent, I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds. Pretty standard really. At the age of 12 I received my first scribe. At the age of 14 a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum. It's breath-taking, I suggest you try it. with apologies to Austin Powers... |

I think college wont be bad at all. Everyone says its fun and there will probably be more parties, which i have to try hard not to go to if i have work to do. College is going to be so much bigger too, my high school is only a about 500 kids, the colleges im looking at are like 5000. I know AP classes are really easy compared to college classes, thats why im taking them. I figure its best to get them out of the way now when they are easier. But you are right about hs being carefree, especially now in the 2nd semester when i dont have to work as hard. I know i will miss highschool alot, but im looking forward to college. I thought i was really going to slack off alot, but im not. Its hard to just stop doing work because im too paranoid that colleges are going to recind their acceptances. |

High school is the greatest thing ever. Even the hard classes (APs, honors, etc) are easy compared to college classes (if you want to do well, if you want to do mediocre they are about the same, college is still a tough tougher though). And in highschool you could cut and just do whatever you wanted, it was so much fun breaking rules. In college no one cares if you break rules, if you do badly in college breaking rules people look down at you (quite the contrary to high school). In college it's like your job now to study and stuff which is weird. Also, in highschool girls are naive which is great. In college they get smarter, but don't worry Tim, they still put out. My advice is stay in highschool as long as you can, stay there til you're 30, then go to college. Alright, college isn't that bad, it's actually kind of good, but high school was the hottest, so much more carefree. |

Tim: I don't even want to talk about the stuff we did when I was in High School. If you watch American Graffeti, that is the exact stuff that we did, and the movie had real things in it, I know because I grew up in Marin County where some of that happened. My system was to float until the last year of the school that I was in, then get straight As after that and that would always get me where I wanted to go afterwards. Not a good script in todays' world, but it worked for me then. Since I've been working, I've had to put my nose to the grindstone, and not screw around, but enjoy your youth now, because things get a lot harder latter in life, if you want to do well. |

It seems like alot of you guys werent big fans of high school. I love it and its a shame that it has to end soon. sure i hate the endless periods of AP euro and ap bio that are boring as hell, and waking up early, but there are good things, like sports. IMO, sports are more important than school, id rather go to school tired than go to football or wrestling practice tired. Real sports such as football or wrestling teach important lessons such as teamwork (i know wrestling doesnt seem like a team sport, but it is, and a very hard one too)and commitment. You can tell alot about a person by sports they play. Since its 2nd semseter and all i have to do it pass, my school day is one big social event. im glad i never got in the habit of cutting classes, instead i just play games on my calculator or sleep. I think im becoming too lazy! Michael, just like you all my slacking came back to bite me in the ass. It limited my choice of schools, and might keep me from getting into my 1st choice. I didnt realize where i was going untill the end of soph year when i managed to pull a 180 and straightened myself out for the other 2 yrs. I attribute this to football and cars. Football made me dedicated and competitive(maybe overly) and to try for my best and cars gave me a reason to do this because im gonna need a job if i want to own them. I also think my father was a reason because i look up to him and all his accomplishments and i want to make him proud. Partying and staying out late didnt screw me up that much, probably because i never got into drugs. Im sure i would be in a much better situation if i didnt go out and party and stay out late on weekends, but then i would have no fun and miss out on my youth. The way i see it, it is entirely possible to have fun and do well. I agree with your discontent for school, everything i was tought untill last year was eurocentric. The simpsons are also good too, and have real educational value. Alot of you guys have some pretty incredible stories that are inspiring. The question i have for you is what kept you going when things got tough? |

Okay, time for me to answer the question, since I pleaded with you guys from, like, post 100 about not putting the count numbers in your post. So here goes: Born and raised in Hawaii by happenstance, my pops was stationed there while in the U.S. Navy. Half my childhood on a military base, usually the only "browned skinned" kid on the block. Culture shock, when I moved off base to an old sugar plantation town on the other side of the Island (hehe at least more browned skinned people there) had to learn a new language called "pidgen English"- sort an American Creole language. Felt out of place and picked on constantly because I spoke "straight" English. Missed out on all of the "cultural" must have's and must do's that kids my age did- things such as watching all the Star Wars episodes at the movies or watching E.T. and going to Disneyland (latch key kid- Mom working or Dad always out to sea) So I engrossed myself in reading Albert Einsteins biography and trying to understand the Theory of Relativity in the 4th grade. Going to the local supermarket to pick up Stereo Review monthly and never missing an episode of ABC's World News Tonight with Peter Jennings. I was the only one in my 4th, 5th, and 6th grade class that could explaing the Cold War, understand it, and was scared s*itless about it. During the same time, I had a fascination with the Three Stooges, Will Rogers, and I Love Lucy. Read all of their biogrophies. Still did the "low budget" (I did not have all the requisite toys other kids had) fun/troublemaking stuff when I could such as exploring the miles of sugar cane fields with a bb gun and slighshot (slingshot and bb gun stolen or borrowed depending on how you look at it) and swimmming and fishing at the brackish irrigation ponds troughout (didn't know until later on that the ponds were chemically treated....do'h!). Breaking windows exploring the kiawe tree "forrest" in our backyard throwing rocks at things. Feeding the neighbors marijuana plant leaves to the other neighbors rabbit- I didn't know marijuana was illegal until I saw the police helicopter and a raid occur across the street from me. Planting firecrackers in mailboxes. Playing two hand touch football bare feet on the asphault "Hawaiian Style"- i.e. no scrimmage line. Taught myself many booksmart things and all was going well until.....I discovered girls and high school came about. Cut class alot in high school, (thanks for working parents, beautiful drives around the island and a license to drive at 15). Felt general discontent with the education system and almost didn't graduate because of my rebelliousness (and my ability to forge signatures on all the off campus and hall passes and doctors notes) Went in to college with renewed vigor to feed my brain. Gonna become a doctor I told myself. All the slacking in high school caught up with me. I made friends with a lot of smart pre-med students but sensed their underlying frustration with me when I couldn't pick up as fast on the lectures or in the study groups and always asking for help- dragging down their progress. Began to discover staying up late, playing pool, punk rock, skating, and partying. Lot's of frustration and denial and laziness, I didn't have the knack for being a doctor (or not willing to work hard enough) Realized I was raised American and not knowing a thing about my heritage. Took an Asian Studies class, loved it. Started taking Sociology, Criminal Law, and Political Science courses...all of a sudden I was getting professors approvals to attend graduate classes at the undergraduate level, found my knack and wrote some strong leftist paper that raised a few eyebrows. Discovered a couse called creative writing....loved it. However, still longing for those 5 hour human anatomy labs my now distant pre-med friends used to share. Social Sciences was my "thing"- so was classical guitar as an "easy A to boost my GPA". Started to hate all business majors and big corporations ( I was a neo-hippie!!! LOL) Switched majors at three and a half years. Started to read Skeptic magazine, Car and Driver, Road and Track, Motor Trend, Popular Science, Popular Mechanics and watch old Magnum P.I. and Miamai Vice re-runs (I bet you guys were wondering when this whole post was gonna have the Ferrari tie in, huh? LOL). Decided to major in Asian Studies with a focus on the Philippines. Close to graduation (after almost 6 years), student loans piling up....need to go to graduate school to get anywhere (i.e. Immigration Law, Diplomat, work in Washington etc.) Seeing that all my friends graduated already. Decide to matriculate as well and hit the real world and earn some money...graduate school can wait. Slim pickings for a career with an obscure degree. Moved to Las Vegas met a few friends, one who was a computer guru at only 18. Got me hooked to computers. Decided on pursuing a telecommunications career. Took advantage of my employers generous tuition prepayment and get my MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) certificate. Shady private school went bankrupt because of some compliance issue with the Department of Education and Federal Student loan audits...that jaded me. Growing out of the idealistic college mentatlity, looking at the real world and realizing I had a B.A. but the money I was earning was B.S. started to change my outlook towards big business and started to "play the game" and earn some money. Now I'm in wireless voice and data sales pooling from my quirky, perplexing, constantly stimulated mind and applying my "thing" to be successful and to finally buy a Ferrari one day.....one day....one day...it will happen. One after thought: Still longing to become a doctor or have some advanced degree....graduate school is calling. Well for now, my Barnes and Nobles discount card will do for learning new stuff. My bookshelf is full of books, new but unread as of yet....my brain is nagging me to get started on reading. Latest pickings: Anatomy, Physics, Architecture (Frank Lloyd Wright), Ferrari: The Road Cars, Simpsons Episode guide, The films of Akira Kurosawa, Filipino recipies made easy, Campbel's easy recipies (as in Campbell's soup), Offshore Money Havens, Brave New World, some Neil Postman, and the Army Special Forces Medical Handbook....told you I was quirky. I'm a tangent intersecting a tangent... Did I answer the question "okay"? |

Ok I guess I'll answer. I guess the Ferrari bug got me back in grade school with magnum pi and Miami vise. I remember reading everything I could about them in car & driver, and the rest of the car mags in high school. I went to Iowa State University in pre-med hoping to become a doctor and make enough money to buy a Ferrari some day. Well I didn't make it though and ended up getting my girlfriend pregnant, with a daughter. I dropped out of school and moved in with a friend (girl) in Ohio. We because involved and I got a job as a computer programmer in Columbus Ohio. We had a son adding to her 3 daughters (previous marriage of 8 years) and got married. I'm now 26 with 5 kids total to support and I'm in the middle of purchasing my first home (they should break ground at the end of this month). I had enough saved for a substantial down payment on a 246 (my favorite looking Ferrari) and had planned on getting one. That was halted when I was persuaded to get a "reasonable" car and build a house instead. So for now I have a 2000 Mustang (boy I wish I had got the vette instead) and I guess it will be several more years before I can obtain my first Ferrari. If I can just get some of the kids out of the house! Well there it is Harlan Mott III, the Ferrari owner wannabe, *sigh*. Oh and for the record I have never even sat in a Ferrari. The closest I have been is 10 feet away from a roped off TR at an auto show in the early 90's. |

After posting and not answering the question her goes. Got the Italian car bug as 2 year old when my fathers' first car when he came from Italy was a baby blue '68 Alfa Romeo Giulia. I could here him shifting from blocks away driving home. Growing up in Syracuse, NY. and after many U.S. Gp's at the Glen and of course growing up eating, sleeping, drinking Ferrari's I'm getting closer to my dream. I started my delivery company last year and as soon as the wife is out of law school(2 yrs. away). Shooting for a Challenge car. BTW, I love reading about success from all walks of life and I think it's a great inspiration that with hard work and perseverence we can achieve all our dreams. Drive and enjoy life to its' fullest. Ciao. |

I was born in Harrisurg P.A and moved to Indy in 1984. My Father and I started a pizza and Italian restaurant in 1992. I worked it alone for 3 years until it was a big enough operation for both of us. We currently have 3 locations and are getting ready to open a deli. I have loved Ferraris as long as I can remember, rubber necking everytime I saw one. I finally got one (a 308qv)about a year and a half ago and still sometimes can't believe it when I look at it parked in my garage. Where am I going? Hopefully a few more years in the restaurant business then I want to trade the stock market on a regular basis. There I answered the question, and the thread goes on. |

the reason the viper is fast around the track is the acceleration. A roadrace is nothing more than a series of drag races, with the races connected by corners. Therefore the fastest vehicle is usually the one with the best acceleration, as long at the cornering speed isn't too far off, and since that is generally a function of the tires, the car with the best acceleration wins. |

When I drive a Viper at speed, it does not inspire confidence in either the handling or in the way that it is put together. Have you ever seen a Viper chassis devoid of the sheetmetal? Just pathetic. The Z06 is a more complete sports car than a Viper, in my non-professional opinion. Ernesto |

The Viper runs such good laps because of the straights. That power makes up for a lot of time. A very good driver with a Viper can do well in the turns with one too, but it takes an immense amount of experience with it and usually a lot of suspension modification. I see Vipers wrecked more frequently than any other car I can think of at the track. That power is difficult to manage in the curves. I am probably a little too harsh on them, they are pretty good cars overall. |

I'm curious as to why the Viper is considered a pig on the track? All most all of the reports I have read put it in the top five as far as track times go, as compaired to other topdog sports cars. Alot of the time it is in the top three, and takes first place from time to time. Do you say it is a pig because all the power makes it difficult to drive, or just cause you don't like them? |

My friend just got a new M3 about a month ago now, it's Silver/Black, cool car. I still have a thing for Vettes though, they seem so much more sporty to me than the M3. I mean they are more sport so I guess it makes sense. The M3 is a better quality car though and does carry an entirely different image. |

Chris we buy what we need. For some people, speed is all they need. For other image is all they need. For some they want it all: that's a Ferrari, anything else is a compromise. |

The problem with a Viper is that they are just a blunt instrument of HP and torque. They handle like a fat pig at the track and they are built nearly as well as a Dodge Neon. The problem with the Z06 is that unless you know what to look for it looks just like a C5 (Yawn...) And it's built like a Camaro. I compared these cars when I was looking for a new car and the obvious choice for me was the BMW M3. |

Vipers are clumsy, X06 has far better handling. vipers can be made to get around the course quicker, but it's kinda like driving an overpowered semi. |

I'd take the ZO6, such a cool car IMO, and it is quite nimble and fast for that matter. Plus, you can get it serviced (if it ever needs anything) literally anywhere in the US with absolutely no problems. If Ferrari was a new car it would be a much larger risk to buy one. I would want to because they are incredibly well built and fast, but having less of a franchise behind it than they do now is a scary thought. Where would you get parts? Stuff like that. Just looking at the car though and not potential future events, I would get the Ferrari. |

Sure for off the show room floor the Z06 maybe set up better for handling, but get the Viper dialed in and it is very fast on the track. |

Agreed Ernesto. Teh Z06, in my opinion, is a better overall track car than a Viper even with less horsepower. More nimble and built better. Still no Ferrari, but for only $55k it's a pretty good bargain. |

The Viper is a pig though. It takes a lot of skill to manage it at the track. If you like straight line acceleration though, that's the one. |

I already have a Ferrari, so the next car I would like to add to the garage is a Viper GTS. But I am waiting for the new model to come out so that the used market price on the older ones comes down. I will still keep my 348 though. In my opinion, the Viper is the best American sports car around. Not only does it run with the big dogs, it is one. |

I've seen Vipers, Vettes, and Ferraris wrecked, disassembled, and brand spanking new and the Ferrari is a far better built car. (Good thing you didn't mention BMWs though...) |

Heres something that will elicit alot of responses! If a ferrari was a new car being built and didnt have the heritage or mystique or soul or whatever, and didnt have that great sound, would you pay that much for it when you could just buy a Z06 or viper? I would pay for the ferrari. |

Ok dang it you guys beat me to it again. I read a neet artical about karts vs sports cars. Basically they took a Z06 and put it up agaist a 125 shifter on a full size track. Needless to say the Z06 got spanked. Then they when even crazier and, put a SCAA prepted car(?) vs a 250 enduro shifter, on the infield and high speed banking. The shifter prevailed again. Guess that's why the top drivers train with shifters. You get all the techical performance at a fraction of the price. How ever I have heard that the top pro shifter karts in Europe can fetch upwards of $35K. |

Dominic: I've just started the kart thing. I have a trainer who is teaching me the ins and outs of kart racing. I used to race motorcycles, and the lines are a little different, but similar. I think that my first race with the kart will be this weekend. I have some seat time in karts, and everytime I've gone to the track with friends, I've always been the fastest there, so we'll see if that relates to a race. I plan on running the kart on the kart tracks, but a few of my friends have tracks on their own property and I've run there. An acquiance of mine has a 1.5 mile track at his house, and I've run there a few times. He is successful and races one of the formula cars, and uses the kart to keep in tune. Tough life. |

Damn Art, that's some SERIOUS power in that kart. Do you run it on road courses or kart tracks? My problem is the track close by is not really long enough to stretch the motor out so for me mine is about right. For now. Are you going to race in any series or club events? |

Dominic: the track magic kart is great good handling and very reliable. I have a 125 Honda also, but since I have connections with Honda, was able to get an "A" kit for it. That is what the semi-factory racers use in Europe for the pavenment 125cc championship. Because the rules specify that the engine must be the dirt track motor, we had to duplicate the kit in the motor by welding up a substantial part of the cases, and barrels, etc. The end result is that my 125 had about 50 -55 HP down about 5 - 7 on the roadracers but a whole bunch more than the other guys I deal with. There is no substitute for HP. |

How do like your TrackMagic kart? I looked at them before buying mine but got mine as a whole package from someone who never ran it. Soon to be racing in Maryland. Ciao. |

Tim: I have a GSXR 750 (2000 model year) that runs mid 9s without a wheelie bar. I bet it would run high 8s with a wheelie bar. We run it in the AMA Superbike series and while a stocker dynos about 130 hp on a dyno jet, this one makes about 155 on the same dyno. A friend of mine did the head work, and it does work. The guys running mid 9s on a streek bike have a big set. |

Magoo: I think the Jawa was an East German motorcycle. The guy responsible was a genius, and figured out how to make the two stroke engine work properly with back pressure to help its breathing. The Jawas were the precursors of the Japanese two strokes of the 60s and 70s that were so quick. The 250, 350 Yamahas, Bridgestones, Kawasakis, etc. all used that technology to make what was then great horsepower (60hp for a 350cc street bike). |

Hi guys, I'm rather new to posting but have read most of the threads over the last year. A shifter is money well spent not only because racing is fun but car control and handling at speed is phenomenal. I have a TonyKart shifter which I purchased to race, have fun and better my skills so that when I do purchase my Ferrari it won't end up where it shouldn't. Not a better feeling than taking a corner flat out, revs to red and heart racing. Try it and you'll love it. Ciao. |

I saw a V-Rod at a recent motorcycle show here in the Atlanta area. I liked it more than I thought I would. I have a Harley FatBoy and don't think Harley should try to compete out of their nich against the Jap and Italian sports bikes. If they are, they should build one to really compete and win which the V-Rod can not do. A Jap 600cc sports bike will outrun the V-Rod bad . Even with its Porsche designed engine, the V-Rod is too heavy and has too few ponies . Harley is kinda like Ferrrai when you think about it. They both have created their own nich market and excell in that market even though they're not the best at what they are. Neither Harleys nor Ferraris have the latest technology, are the most reliable nor the most comfortable or fastest. But there is nothing like a Harley just as there is nothing like a Ferrari. It's a passion thing. You have to want one or own one to understand. |

Barrichello was driving for the Tic-Tac team. I wonder ........ do you think cause he needs one? Haaaaha. Anyhow he completed 707 laps. |

Ernie: When I was younger, I raced 250cc motorcycles. They were two strokes. Because we always tuned them to the max, occassionally they would lock up, or seize. A 250 sounds slow, but the ones we raced would go 140+ at the right place. When you rode a two stroke, you always kept your hand on the clutch, because they would seize when you rolled off the gas, and got on the brakes, the worse time to have the rear lock up. I can't recall how many times I ended on my ass when that happened, fortunately without injury. |

Oh Magoo that's painful!!! About ten years ago had a Vespa, it's an Italian scooter for those of you that didn't know. Anyhow it had an automatic oiler that would mix the oil in with the gas, just like a two stroke. Well the indicator that showed how much oil was in left showed that it was full, when it wasn't. Sooooo I was scooting along at about 60 mph when the engine decided to lock up. I skidded sooo far, the only thing I think that saved my a** was my old school instincts from when I was a kid. We would ride our bikes as fast as we could then slam on the brakes to see who could make the longest skid. Well fast forward to the Vespa locking up, I would have made a new world record, lol. I also almost got ran over by a 1 ton pick up truck. Finally the thought occured to pull in the clutch, I did and then rolled to a stop. I only had the bike two weeks and sold it right after that, to a kid that collected them. Good riddins to that thing! |

Martin: Almost all of the F1 and Cart drivers use a kart to stay in tune. If you go to Las Vegas on a Friday night, and there is no CART race, the local kart track grid looks like a CART grid. It is not unusual for those drivers to race a Kart, and in fact, Schumacker got 3rd or 4th in the World Kart championship this last offseason. As to Montoya, he is right were he belongs. Great talent, not much else to say about him that is good. |

Brett: I solved my problem with the motorcycles vs. cars. I got a 125 Track magic shifter cart. Feels sort of like a bike, and is faster around the track. I just got a new unit yesterday, and spent the entire day around the airport (fortunately a private field where you can pull these kind of stunts) seeing what it took to get it loose. Next stop Dixon, California next Saturday. |

I used to be into dirt bike riding/racing a lot so I'm partial to Kawasaki's which is what I always had, other than them though I like Ducati's a lot. What really turned me off about getting a bike was going to a few calls (I was on Rescue for like 4 or 5 years) with accidents involving motorcycles, not pretty at all. We actually have a radio conversation taped of one of the cops chasing a bike on the highway, he pulled the kid over and then the kid took off. Needless to say at around 150mph the kid looked back to see where the cop was and the wind resistance at that speed just ripped him off the bike. I can't remember how far he slid, but it was something ridiculously long and he basically looked like he went through a cheese grater. I still think they're cool as hell technology wise and performance, but for now at least I figure I'll stick to cars. Plus, I wouldn't want to piss off my dad, he had two Harley's when he was younger and doesn't want me to get a bike, and although I do all the financial matters with the Fcar, he does help me out with work I do on it, like the engine pull. |

OUCH!!! I still may get a bike in the future, but not any of the big ones (+750cc), a nice 250 would be enough to get my ya ya's out. A neighbor of mine in Montreal many years ago lost his son to a motorbike accident. It was the first ride of the year and he took his bike on a nice scenic ride on Ile Bizard (a small island north of Montreal, has a neat curvy road going around it). The bike slipped on some sand on the road that was used during the winter. He flew and got impaled into a tree... |

Ernie, I am somewhat like you except I used to ride them. I ass ended a car that was stopped just over a hill and woke up as they were pulling me out from under the car where I was out cold and making love to the differential. The thing that really put the brakes on it for me was, My cousin hit the back of truck. As he vaulted over the handle bars something caught him between the legs and ripped his scrotum , balls, in half. Every time I think about getting back on I get a funny pain in the crotch area. |

Brett: I represent the former West Coast dealer for Aprillia, Zero Gravity. Those are great bikes. Last year in World Superbike, Aaprilla took 2nd place. Neat toys. I have the Suzukis because I can get "works" bikes because of my representation of them. Riding on the street and going fast is probably crazy. I occassionally still do that, but only in weaker moments. Track days are where I like to go fast, and there is little to hit. Most of the time that I ride are the Friday practice days before the race day. I still can ride fast enough so that I'm not in the way of the kids practicing for the race, and that makes it still fun. |

Oh as a teenager I would have loved to have had a bike. But after seeing my first motorcycle hitting a car accident I person, one word "UGLY" say's it all. This guy tagged the side of the car going like 35 mph and Dandadadaaa, up, up and away just like Superman he went. Turned 180 landed on his feet backwards then smacked his head on the pavement, cause the momentum was to great. Oh yeah this numb nuts didn't have a helmet on either. That cured me of getting a bike. Not that a fast car is any safer, but at least you have some sort of shell around you. Once in a great while the thought will cross my mind but the think the wiser of it. Oh about the guy, well his guardian angel got a huge pat on the back that day. He was whisked off in the ambulance, only needing a large amount of stiches to patch the gash in the back of his head. |

At the tire place I go to there was a guy with an Aprilia (spelling?). He had their top of the line bike with everything except the mag rim option. The thing was cool as hell. One of the guys that runs the tire place used to race superbikes so I guess he's still involved with that stuff a bit. |

Ernie: The car is more controllable, but for some stupid reason, I'm more willing to take a risk on the bike than the car. When I was racing, and would crash, the first thought I would have is: How much is this going to cost? That was earlier in my career, and later the thought was how much is this going to hurt? That's when I knew it was time to quit. I just spoke to my friend John Ulrich, the editor of Roadracing World, and he tells me that Suzuki will be building a new 1000 that makes this one look slow, look for it in 2003. That's nuts, a 10k ride that goes 180 mph! I'm sticking with the Ferrari for roadgoing speed, the motorcycle will get you killed on the street. Art |

Martin & Ernie: We'll see who gets there first. On another note: I just got a GSXR 1000 (2001 Model). Is it fast. Willow Springs Raceway has a relatively short front straightaway, with about a 100 mph turn entrance. How about 175 mph on the speedo. This thing is stock. An absolute rocket ship. Can't wait to see how fast the 355 is in comparison. |

Tim: Didn't die at 350. Tillman: I wanted to race cars in the early 60s, and started reading road and track. One of my neighbors was a man named Marvin Webster. He had a machine shop, and several patents. His hobby was racing and he had a sports racer. His driver was a journalist (who later ended up dead in a wreck). I would go to the sports car races with them and watch the action. I saw how much it cost in those dollars and decided that I would race motorcycles rather than cars. I did decide that when I could, I would own a Ferrari. While I could have bought a 308 in the early 80s, I never did. When a friend of mine bought a 308 QV, I bought a 348ts. I went to Europe in 99, loaned him the car, and he took it to a shop, where it was totaled. I then bought a 348 spyder, which I kept for a year. I hated that car, it grounded constantly, the top didn't seal, and I thought it was slow. I bought a 355 as soon as I could, without the wife knowing where the funds came from, and I still have the 355. I think this is either the last Ferrari, or the next to last, I haven't seen the 360 replacement, I don't like the look of the 360. |

Changing paces a little. I am interested in where some of you got started. What made you want a Ferrari, and what made it possible. Where are you now, and how did you get there?? And what would you have changed along the way?? Well, I guess I can answer this post: I'm a net admin for a commercial real estate company and a Ph.D. student. I don't yet have a Ferrari, but the chase is on and I'll probably have a 308GTs(x) by the end of the summer. I spent way too much time hanging out in college and earned several degrees before they made me leave :-) I accidently fell into the computer job, it turned out I have a knack for it. While I'm not rich, I'm doing well enough (and have low enough debt levels) to afford a toy + the maintenance. I've always wanted a 308, from my childhood in the 70s/80s. I'll admit that Magnum P.I. had a strong influence there, but the bottom line is that the cars are just beautiful.

I have been in San Diego 2 years ago and must say that is a nice area. I also liked the Monterey Area. San Fran was not too great, neither was I impressed about LA. If I had to make a choice there, I would go for San Diego as well. Florida is great too. Sanibel is just not my place either. Sarasota is nice. Could move into Pauls house any day! |

What the heck, I never answered the original question in this thread.... here's #341. I came from Chicago and moved to Dallas in 1979 about 2 years after college... I got here in a '79 280ZX pulling a U-Haul trailer with everything I owned... just decided I didn't want to spend the next 30 years fighting ice cold weather and snow. Also got tired of rusted cars. Now I'm occasionally traveling back to Chicago on biz... I definitely made the right decision. It was 70 degrees in Dallas today and 35 in Chicago. When the time comes to hang up the spikes, our next move will be San Diego.

I've watched this thread for months, guess the water's warm enough to jump in. What I think would be very nice (if it doesn't overload Rob's server) would be to post some pictures of members and family. It's alway nice to see not just talk. Whatever that's worth. I started out hating (and still hate) school of any kind. Started a Rock Group that played NY and NJ (mostly shore) in 1965-68 (Named:Glass Menagerie). Had a ball, loved the women. After a tragedy of sorts, a friend took me into a CPA firm to help him. After that, landed a job with a Danish ham importer and worked up to VP. From there I started my own software company in 1986 selling distributor software I wrote. In 1996 I was ask to help rescue another Danish Ham company and have been running it since. Oh well, that's it, except in between, I met and married one incredible lady and have two great kids with her, one's a teacher now and the boy is (unfortunitly) like his dad. He hates school as well. Good luck. I hope that's getting back on track with this thread. (Rob, by the way, It's hard hitting the post button when so many words show up in yellow. I need to get up the courage to post it)(no school no can spiell spel spell?) |

Used Ferrari market prices are strictly supply and demand. 308/328 are now in low demand in spite of a small supply; prices are down. Why does a 246 Dino sell for so much more? Demand. Would you pay $45k for a prime 246? Of course you would. Why? Would you pay $45k for an equal condition 308? Why not? Bottom line: buyers set the market in used Ferraris, NOT sellers. |

Ernie: You're right about the prices, but the fault isn't us, its the economy. Until it gets turned around, a lot of guys who need to selling their toys, will sell at a loss. When the economy turns around, prices will rise again. It's a 9-11 year cycle, I've seen it happen before and it will happen again. Now is the time to buy a used Ferrari, not time to sell. |

Are you crazy? Don't ever buy a new car. The second you sign on the dotted line it drops $6k in value, cause now it is "used". Besides the way prices have been falling you can expect to loose at least $50k in depreciation alone. The reason for this is cause people let their cars go to easy. STOP selling your cars cheap! If you ask a dealer what a 328 cost he will tell you $40-50k. Now we all know one can be had for about $25-35K. depending on how hard and long you look. Take my 348 for example. Brand new they went for $100-120k depending on if it was a spider or not. From a private sale you can fetch $70k for it if your lucky. Yet at the dealer they want $80-85 for the same car. Bulls**t if you ask me. So 1) don't buy new, 2) don't sell low. I say this over and over again. Come on guys let's turn this around. |

We do need to answer the question, but the unanswered question is "where are we going?" I think that we have all achieved enough to get a Ferrari, but what do we plan on doing in the future. I for one, hope that when the new Ferrari comes out, that I will be on the list top buy a new one from the dealer, and that when that happens, my economics let me make the purchase, and that my health allows me to enjoy it. At a crossroads at my job (note job, and not career). How did I get there? Being a cog in the big corporate machine. What has changed along the way? My belief in my company. So there. |

If we're telling jokes: Why does Mike Tyson cry when hes having sex? Because you alway cry with mace in your eyes. |

Heating up the debate again: ) A Priest and a Rabbi are riding on a plane, each enjoying a leisurely cocktail and after a while start to chat a bit. The Priest turns to the Rabbi and asks, "Is it still a requirement of your faith that you not eat pork?" The Rabbi responds "Yes, that is still one of our beliefs." The Priest then asks "Have you ever eaten pork?" To which the Rabbi replies, "Yes, on one occasion I did succumb to temptation and tasted pork. The Priest nodded in understanding and leaned back in his seat to relax. A while later, the Rabbi spoke up and asked the Priest, "Father, is it still a requirement of your church that you remain celibate?" The Priest replied, "Yes, that is still very much a part of our faith." The Rabbi then asked him "Father, have you ever fallen to the temptations of the flesh?" The Priest replied, "Yes, Rabbi, on one occasion I was weak and broke with my faith." The Rabbi nodded understandingly for a moment and then said, "A lot better than pork, isn't it? |

In the mid 70's, F1 was a lot more open, many drivers would talk to team members from other teams. I worked with John Surtees for three years, he is a wonderful person, so many stories and an incredible memory for details. In Italy as with any ex Ferrari driver he is idolised. He told me once that he would not write his biography until the time was right, no other details, but interestingly it was published after Enzo's passing, it included details of the politicking within the F1 team. |

Back to the original post: Where do I come from? London, England. Spent 30 years in racing F1, Sportscars, Indy. Where am I now? Indy, USA Currently running an independent shop, Porsche, Ferrari etc., also vintage racecar preparation and restoration. Where am I going? Heaven! Before then I hope to relocate the shop, find a business partner/investor, get back to the mechanics side more. |
