I have to chime in on this topic. My car certainly has a smell of its own. A mix of leather, gas rich-exhaust, oil and fresh air. I drove it around all day yesterday and I just love that darn car.

LOL, true.
Yeah when I pulled it apart I could see that the washers were capoot. Now I'm contemplating reannealing them or just waiting until I replace them when the Fcar comes in (I think I'll be done cleaning the shop today so maybe tonight or tomorrow although it's supposed to snow). I might reanneal them though cause I wanna drive the Ferrari some more and degrease and all before I start. We'll see.

The leaky banjos Bret could be due to hardened copper gaskets (if it uses them). You can soften them by annealing (heat with a torch till cherry red and let air cool naturally, clean soot off and reuse). You can only do this so many times. Best to spend a few bucks and renew.

Imagine what pleasant smells you'd have in that engine bay if your 308 had castor oil in it!

I doubt there are very few Ferraris, old or new, that don't have some sort of smell eminating from their engine compartment. If they don't now, they will in due time. Let's see, right now I have both gasoline and oil from a leaking fuel pump connection (damn banjo bolts) and a leaking valve cover. I haven't driven the Ferrari in almost a month now and wont until the spring I guess when it's all back together.

Sounds nasty. Get it checked. Don't do it for us. Do it for your Ferrari. :)

That does not sound right.
If it smells like gas have it checked immediately otherwise we will see your car as the Toy Store Special on eBAy in a few weeks.
Your car should smell like new leather, not like racing fuel!

Explain a little further., Inside the car or outside, before or after driving?

I have a late '99 550 Maranello... its my first Ferrari and I'm just checking my paranoia...

It's just that my car smells a bit... either of oil or gas not sure which one. I've smelt this at a Ferrari dealer when test driving other cars.

So, as well as sounding wonderful do Ferraris smell good too? Is this smell of oil/gas under normal driving something that needs checking up on?

Thanks,

LWR
