I have had a 328GTS,400GT,TR and 330GTC loved them. I now have a 1994 348 Spider and love it too. They are different beasts, but all beast nonetheless. I have owned Porsches(944 & 993), Corvettes(L82 & L98), a Viper, a M3, two M5s and various other sports cars/coupe/sedans in the past and they all pale in comparison to the feeling a Ferrari gives you.

Jon is right on the money and that is coming from someone who lost the back end of the TR twice and lived to tell about it. 8/10 ths is about right, I went for 100% and paid the price. The good side is the car is flat to the ground so tipping over is rare. It took 3 corrections to get the tail back the first time but it was a long 3 - 5 seconds. The second time I saw it coming and took only 2 corrections but it still zips out way fast. Don't do that any more, but with about 20 hours of driving school and some serious track time it can be handled. William gets to 100% for sure, but he is as close to a serious professional driver as one gets without sponsorship. He does things in his car that my regular 90TR could not do and then some. The feelings the car evokes is uncanny. It is a shape that either speaks to you or not. Every time I start it I get a cool feeling and then above 100 MPH damn its like nirvana. There are way better track cars, way better handling cars but the TR does have one hell of a spirit. For me another car that seems to have that spirit is the 288GTO -- the ultimate Ferrari in my book, but not as good a daily driver as the TR.

Jeffrey,

It was quite a difference between the two in terms of both quality and performance.

In terms of quality, the materials used and the build quality on the F355 was light years ahead of my TR. Reliability has also been better which surprised me because the TR was used mainly as a weekend car (rarely tracked) and the 355 was mainly a track toy.

In terms of performance the most starling difference is handling. The TR handles great when driven at 7/10ths or 8/10ths but anything above requires the skill of a professional race car driver. Once you loose the back end, forget about saving it, it's long gone. Some of these issues were corrected in the 512 TR (William can shed more light on this than I can, since I have never driven a 512 TR).

The 355, even in stock form, had unbelievable grip and poise that the TR never had. I could drift the car all over the track, hang the tail out, lift off mid corner and do all sorts of other things that would have sent the TR into a tail spin.

As far as acceleration goes the F355 felt faster below below 80 but the TR felt stronger above 80 mph. However this is subjective feel and on paper the 355 is faster to 60, 100, and 150 mph.

The F355 was much more comfortable to drive long distances and the clutch and gear shift were much easier to use.

All this being said, when I drove the TR I felt like I was driving something special. Each drive was a special event. The car was a true exotic in both looks and performance.

I still feel the TR is one of the most beautiful Ferrari's despite what the press said about the car when it was introduced and the feeling among collectors that the TR is ugly and mainly an expensive failure along with the rest of the cars of the late 80's.

I traded a one year old Porsche 993 on the TR and people where always asking me why I traded a then almost brand new Porsche for a eight year old Ferrari from the 80's. The reply was simple, nothing Porsche makes or has ever made provokes passion like a Testarossa does.

That special feeling in the TR has never been equaled in any car I have driven, including the 355. Don't get me wrong I love the 355, but it just doesn't provoke the passion in me the way the TR did.

Hope this helps!

Regards,

Jon

I got sent out to pick up the current edition of "Sport Compact Car", as they compare 9 souped up street cars (mostly imports) against a 360, in a variety of tests. It's quite fun, actually, you can read the teaser at http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/archives/features/feature01_0302.jsp

Anyway, one of the tests is a dyno. I wish they'd shown the chart, but they didn't. The 360 generated 338 rwhp, so that's about a 15% drivetrain loss, if you believe the 400 flywheel horsepower figure.

One figure that really surprised me was the mileage. They measured 30.4mpg, mostly freeway driving. If I remember right, my window sticker said 10/16 mpg. Can I look forward to something closer to 20/30?

Jon P.
What was it like going from a TR to a 355?
Or anyone else who has compared the two.

Dont forget that 8 cyl ferraris tend to not have much torque, thats why the 0-60 times arent impressive compared to other sportscars.

The 348 Spider does 0-100kph(62mph) in 5.5 seconds per the manual that came with the car. The Spider, GTB, GTS and Speciale all had 312hp and a lower ratio final drive than the earlier tb and ts models. The tb and ts models are listed as doing 0-100kph in 6 seconds.

You must be joking guys. The 348 is 0-60 6 secs the 355 is 0-60 4.6.

300hp 348
380hp 355 & is 6 speed

When I drove the 348 it did not even come close to the fun of the 355

regards
