I found it amusing. I wonder how many times other teams picked on the Bread Van at the track. I get the impression that it wasn't very difficult to joke about in the pits. I guess if you win races though who cares what others say.

The Bald guy is Eric Van De Poele and I hope I spelled his name right. let's see he drove the Bently in last year lemans race. And yes the breadvan did race at lemans. I think it was 1963. I also think it dropped out. I don't know how many laps it made.

Count Volpi had ordered a 250GTO from Ferrari in order to race it under the 1962 Manufacturer's Championship under his own team. Enzo Ferrari being himself promptly decided against selling the Count the car because he didn't want to compete against his own design. So, the Count employed a designer named Bizzarrini to change the 250GT SWB chassis # 2819GT into a more competitive racer. They moved the engine lower and back in the chassis for better weight distribution as well as to allow that low front nose. The rear aerodynamics was the result of a German study being done by a guy named Kamm (I'm pretty sure that's his name) and was thought to allow better high speed drag and stability.

Thanks for the pics and input.. Does anyone know where the idea of the "breadvan" originated? and what the purpose of such a car was? Just curious..

My guess is - Kelly, you're the bald, lower weighted guy on the left.

Reason is when I put my cursor on the picture
it is filed under 'big fat guy' on your upload.

I saw it in the metal at Laguna Seca about 10 years ago, its a real GTO. I wonder if Zagato did the body ? Drogo designed the series 1 & 2 250GTOs

I think they said a Doctor bought the car and he thought that the shape would cut down on drag. Basicly wind-tunnel reseach before they had wind-tunnels?

I have a book with a single rear 3/4 shot. The book is "Ferrari, the racing cars" by keith bluemel. Count Volpi built his own car designed by Giotto Bizzarrini which was the 250gt bread van body. Built on a 250gt swb chassis #2819gt in 1962.

I remember reading about this car many years back, and it came up in a conversation with a friend of mine who doesn't believe it exists... Would anyone have any additional info why Ferrari built this car? and any pics or the history behind it??
