Daryl, I am a video game "junkie". I own them all (PS1, PC, PS1, Sega Dreamcast and recently PS2 and X-Box). You can't go wrong with either X-box or PS2. I initially bought PS2 because of all the games, but have since sold it. X-Box wins hands down in the graphics department and has a much better chip set (Intel 770 mghz with the Nivida chip set). The only downside is that their are only 3 or 4 racing games for it at present. I have F1 and Gotham Racing and am eagerly awaiting Microsofts new Rally game. I really only buy these game systems for F1 and Sports car racing (Lemans Test Drive, CART, etc.) In fact I bought the Sega Deamcast just to play the F355 Challenge game (only game I purchased for that sytem.) If you want more games and don't want to wait get PS2, but if all you want is F1 then get X-box its got a much better chip set, a hard drive and looks better on bigscreen TV's. Good Luck! Jon P. My favorite is Monaco GP 2 on the Dreamcast. Nice AI, detailed setups, and tricky handling. The downside is that it's unlicensed and on a now unsupported system (but dirt cheap!). On the PS2 your choices are 989's (Sony) or EA's F1 game. The 989 one has poorer graphics but is a little better at some of the sim aspects. The handling is tougher than EA's. EA's is fun to play. If you get an EA one, make sure it's the 2001 version. The 2000 version had AI cars that didn't know you were racing on the track, super grip yielding lap times 20% better than reality, and lousy setups. The 2001 one is much, much, better and can be enjoyed from both an arcade and sim aspect. I haven't played the PS2 version of EA's F1 game, but I do have the Xbox version. I'd prefer to have it on the PS2 since I've got the Logitech force feedback wheel for the PS2 (also compatible with PCs). I actually reviewed the Xbox version of F1 2001 from EA, but it's not up yet at www.sports-gaming.com. In the meantime, I suggest looking at www.calvertgames.com (Jonathan reviewed both the EA and 989 one for the PS2), www.digitalsports.com (Randy Magruder knows his racing games), or the forums at www.ianstorm.com/Forums/periscope/default.asp (forum for the old www.sportsreviewers.com). I'm on there a lot and many of the users know their racing games. Not a bunch of kids but mostly old farts like me in their late 20s to 30s. |

Even Bill Gates joked about his XBox during the opening of this years CES. |

I have the 989 Sports Forumla 1 2001 game for the ps2 console and like it very much. The graphics for single player games are far better than for 2 player mode, none the less in Championship/Single Race/Test mode you can adjust the car setup, load previous set-ups, save, etc. The sound leaves something to be desired, but it is good enough. Also, if you crash, pieces of the car come flying off [sometimes including wings, tires, etc.], pit-stops are timed, tire and fuel usage/wear are also incorporated as are flags, qualifying and grid positions, communication w/ the pits, race commentary by the legendary Murray Walker, rules and pit lane speed limits! And, the other drivers surely do want to win, as you'll often times find yourself being bumped or pushed. The physics are a little soft, but I would imagine it would be hard to truely simulate the violence inherant in driving an F1 car anyway. So, w/ that said, I would suggest renting it beforehand, and making up your own mind. As of now I would stay away from the Xbox console, as it's been dubbed, by many, as "The Ford of video game consoles"! |

If you're looking for a good F1 sim on any system (pc, psII or xbox) then the EA Sports F1 2002 f1 sim might float your boat. I've only played the EA Sports 2001 F1 season on my computer, and the only problem i had was getting my Sidewinder Precision Steering Wheel to work at first. Solution: reprogram the controller =P Apart from that, i think there is quite a lack of good F1 sims, or any racing games at all, this year so far. |

Now that winter's finally here I'm thinking of upgrading my F1 racing simulator. I now have an old copy of World Circuit which runs on a PC. I'm thinking Playstation II or the X Box is likely the way to go as they have state of the art processors and I have a large TV I can utilize. However, I don't have any familiarity with the systems or software available. All I care about is F1, and I'm looking for the most realistic sim. Anybody have an opinion? |
