I think it depends on the reasons why one buys cars. I think, besides speculation, there are two main reasons why people buy cars like Ferraris. Using art as an example, there is the person who buys art and then locks the art up in the vault. They get joy from owning so many of this artist, so many from that artist, etc. Then there is the person who buys works of an artist who moves them and puts the works on a wall to enjoy them daily. Of course, there are endless degrees in between. Same with Ferraris: one gets joy just from ownership, another mainly from driving. There are other factors like prestigue, but I think these two things mainly affect how we use Ferraris. |

Heard in the cafeteria today: Joe, why do you stay in that horrible job that you hate so much? Because it makes the weekend at the golf course seem so wonderful. Why don't you take the job at the golf course; it pays more than your current job, and you'd be there everyday. Yeah, but then the weekends won't be special anymore. Sorry, I don't agree with the "less is better logic". While I agree that "less makes the few times more special"... I'd rather drive a Ferrari every day than once/wk. Look at this way... if driving a Ferrari once/wk is a "10" for that day, and driving a normal car is a "1" for that day... I'd say driving a Ferrari every day is a "8" for that day... but let's go with "5". So, your choice is 6*1+10= 16 or 7*5= 35. 35 is waayyy better than 16. And I think 8 is more right... 56 vs. 16... you decide. Hell, go sell the Ferrari and buy a Yugo. Then with the extra money, once a month, go rent some different Ferrari... those will each be *very* special rides, so dramatically better than that Yugo, afterall.. and each ride very unique.

Magoo, was that you in our parking lot here in Bay Harbor with a white MB SL and the license plate: MAGOO SN ??? As to your question, you know I drive daily, even sometimes when it rains (yes my pants do get wet...). I have been getting bored with cars easy. Not with the F though. Never had one Ferrari for so long as this one and must say ever time is a new experience and it is always full enjoyment. Makes me smile when I twinch into the car and then take off slowly. Try it, you will see what I mean.

When my newly purchased 308GTB arrives, it will be pretty much a daily driver. I have driven a number of 911's, including early ones as daily cars. I drove a '63 E-Type Jag roadster as a daily car for 2 years in college and I drove a '73 TR6 as a daily car for 3 years. To me a great car is always great and the more you drive it the greater it becomes. When driving any kind of special car, I always find myself looking back at it after parking. THAT is the test... does the car always make you look and smile! |

I would probably not use mine as a daily driver even if I could. I agree with Magoo that for me, it is a special privilege to get the F-car out and go for a spin. When I've have a rough day, when I need to get away from the house, or when I simply want to be with the car, I take it out. Someday down the road when I have 3 or 4 F-cars in the garage, I may change my tune. |

I do the same thing with the 355: When I park in a public place, I use the plain brown cover, and not the one that came with the car. It protects from the UV and unwanted attention. I have my own parking at work at an attended lot, so I usually don't have to keep an eye on it. On the weekends I am usually driving so I don't have to watch it, but in Marin County (where I live) there are so many Fcars, that they are not unusual, so the worry factor isn't a big deal. Art |

RMV -- I use my TR as a daily driver, and whenever I need to leave it parked outside somewhere for more than 1/2~1 hour I put my simple (gray) car cover on it -- (in addition to minimizing the UV exposure) it does a good job of keeping the "attention" factor down (so the little urchins don't see the emblems and get tempted). It also gives a little protection from door dings if forced to park next to other vehicles. |

I drive my Europa almost every day weather permitting. I get more comfortable in it every time and get more out of it as a result. The only time I'm glad to be in the Honda is in rain or in heavy traffic jams. Check that; I'd still rather be in the Lotus! |

Do any of you guys who drive your Ferrari's often, or as daily drivers, worry about the security aspects of doing so, i.e, theft, vandalism, carparks etc? |

Dave and all you guys, You have answered my question. The majority of you enjoy driving whenever you can even as a daily driver. I really like my GTS. Maybe it's because I live in Florida and here you can drive your car year round whenever you choose. I really like my GTS and I love the styling but it's like sometimes a hamburger is more satisfying than a steak. I'm like Art, I wouldn't want to drive it all the time. The Ferrari suits me at certain times when nothing else will do and that's when I feel like it is special to me. Now don't get me wrong, The "Ferrari Passion" is there even when I walk in the garage and look at that work of art. Thanks for your input, Magoo |

Magoo: I drive the 355 a couple of times per week. Of course I try not to drive it when I think its going to rain. I find that the more I drive it, the more familar I become with its quirks, and the more I like it. I bought it to use, not as an investment. I don't think that I'd want to drive it all the time however. Sometimes the Audi works better and I get where I'm going in better condition to get done what needs to be done with the Audi. But there are times that nothing but the Fcar will do. Art |

Some people will undoubtedly get bored if they drive their F car too much. The warts of a Ferrari may begin to overwhelm the excitement. That's why there are former Ferrari owners. For me, driving a lot has done just the opposite. As time and miles have gone along, I have come to appreciate more of what the cars are all about. Plus, I can never really get to know a car and all it's quirks if I drive sporadically. With familiarty comes confidence when driving for me. But I wish to thank all those who are keeping garage queens. You are ensuring that there will always be a good supply of nice, low mileage cars. I mean this sincerely. My 328 was a garage queen so now I have a beautiful almost new 13 year old car! Plus, I do understand the appeal of just wanting to pamper, polish and admire a Ferrari, it's just not my priority. Magoo, I hope we have helped answer your question. Dave |

I decided to trade in the 355 for a 550 because I wanted more of a "daily driver". Of course, here in Kansas City I know that the 550 will not see any use for about 4-5 months of the year. And, if the weather is really bad I will drive something else. But for me driving the 550 is a taste of the old 275. The V-12 up front, sounding like an Italian sewing machine , the Cavallino on the steering wheel, all these things make me appreciate the mark all the more. Besides, one of the best parts of Ferrari ownership is sharing the experience. As far as I'm concerned, you just can't get too much of this good thing. |

I completely disagree Magoo. I drive mine almost daily and it feels just as good as the first day I drove it. The fact that it is a Ferrari and most people never even get to see one up close, let alone drive one is enough to make it special any time I take it out. |

I've only had it a month, but I still drive my 328 every chance I get, no matter how lame. Grocery store, 7-11, whatever. I just love rolling along, listening to the engine...Hard to imagine that getting old. |

I drive my 308 GTS QV on weekends, and maybe once during week when I am picking up a special customer for lunch. The customer really feels extra special when driven to lunch in a Ferrari. |

Must disagree. That which is excellent, is new forever. Every time I drive it, see it, hear it, its like the very first time. The joy never diminishes. Would regularly seeing a classic painting or a beautiful woman or any great work of art get boring? Does going online to FC every day get boring? I think not...

Have to disagree. Every time I drive it it is special...a little extra sun, a little open road, the sound? It doesn't happen in my other vehicles and you never know when they are going to happen up here in the Northwest so driving it all the time is the only way to make sure you don't miss the opportunity. Life is too short to save time for later. - JMG |

I just feel that the more you use something it becomes a common everyday practice. To me I would think boredom would set in and there would be less appreciation for the car when used on special occassions. In other words nothing to look forward to. You guys who drive your Ferraris everyday know if this is true or not. I have other collectibles as well and if I drive any one of them too much it becomes like a common car. Maybe it is just me but I think too much of anything becomes boreing. |

Magoo, I drive the F-cars whenever I can, whether to get some beer or a special ride on twisty 2 lanes. Even when I drive everyday which I can do now that weather is good, each ride is still special. 6+ years and 40K+ miles and I still enjoy it as much as the first day. Dave IMO a struggle in life makes the rewards better. For me a struggle or challenge is an end in itself. Dave |

I have not bought my first Ferrari yet, but I used to have an Austin Healey 3000 Mark III as a daily driver even though I had other vehicles. The car was a reward to myself for accomplishing some things and as inspiration to accomplish the goal in the first place. Since I was not rich and had to struggle to get it, this might have affected my enjoyment. I drove the Healey about 30,000 miles a year. I never grew tired of it and it was always something special and fun to drive. I have known others who have had similar experiences. |

I drive mine as much as possible on nice days. If I am just going to be at work all day I won't take it because my work it so close. I don't see the point in driving it two miles just to let it sit out in the hot sun. I do see your point though but here in Indianapolis I have to put the car away for the most part from Nov-march. To me it is like getting a new car every spring. It is great taking it on the first drive. This winter was actually unusually mild so I took advantage and drove it on a lot of sunny 40 degree days. I really only garaged it for about a month. |

I know some of you use your car as a daily driver. Now if that is point A to point B, I can possibly see that, like home to office. Then there is the daily driving going here and there. I couldn't do that and keep the same enjoyment I have with my Ferrari. I would get tired of that quickly. I like my car as diversion. I am not knocking you guys who drive your Ferraris all the time but I think it would take the "something special" away from it. How do you guys feel about it? |
