here's a road trip....bought my 75, gt4 in New Mexico the end of august 2000. ambient temps were 115 degrees across AZ. and southern CAL. heading west to San Clemiente CA. one long hot day! heater on, windows down; dry ice in news paper everywhere inside the car for me. (kept a block on my lap) stuffed blocks in the oil and water rads to keep the gauges at bay. flying across the desert w/a trail of dry ice fog behind me, if you will. the next day heading up I5 to seattle, 88F felt cold. made it w/out a hitch. it even survived a 6.2 this week.....what a car!

Has anyone heard more about that Vignale Spyder stolen from the Mille Miglia?

You make a lot of money stealing Ferraris providing that you don't get caught. It's the same here, but there are more of them over there so more are stolen. They might have a higher theft rate in some cases though. Most cars that are stolen (I read all the reports my mom gets from Mercedes) are shipped to the Middle East and South America. Those are the two largest "hot" car markets by far.

I did 180mph on US 395 between Carson City & Reno in my Countach 5000QV, several times, not exactly legal though :)
Ive heard a lot about Ferrari theft in europe, especially Italy, whats the scoop on that ?

William, if you have a chance:

South of Frankfurt, A656 between Darmstadt and Mannheim was my favourite race track, no speed limit, legal 180 mph.

William probably in the places you mentioned they wouldn't catch up with you since I don't remember them having a car fast enough there ;-) Not true in Germany where some of the Polizei do have Porsches and they are very strict on limited speed zones.

My personal experience: in France/Spain in the Motorway/Autovia where there's is a toll for most of them you "shouldn't" be bothered in the fast lane and can drive like in the Autobahn ... In the UK there's enforcement at a low 80mph you should be fine, they even have photo/radar at some spots.

William; i would think they'd know better than to try and catch u.

So if I decide to ship a car over to europe some time for a little tour, how fast can I drive in France, Spain, & UK without getting stopped by the Gendarmes ?

I've been quite a few times over france and I don't remember seeing the speed police there and although the speed limit is 130kph most will go a quite bit faster I drove my little 993 Marseille to Paris in a few hours on a light traffic day.

I've been caught twice already in Austria and there are lots of radar police there and you must pay on the spot.

BTW Bernard you might also consider a few laps at the Nürburgring if you happen to be there when there's not an event going on.

Cheers

Bernard, now That is a worthwhile trip, I'd love to do that some day except I'd probably take a BMW M5 so I could do a little shopping here & there. I heard the French r real bastards about speeding. If they catch u with a radar detector in your car they confiscate the car!!!

One thing you might want to print out and have in your car is:

It has Ferrari support all around the world in case you get into trouble along the road. Long trips are a concern of mine also but I probably won't do many of them. Last long trip was a 1000 mile drive in my ALFA when I brought it to Florida -- no problems, thank goodness!

I live in London (UK), In September I'am taking my GTS Turbo to Cannes in the South of France.

We're not taking a direct route, so the total trip will be about 3000 miles over 10 days.

We'll go via Paris, Lyon then onto Cannes. While on the coast we will drive over to Monaco, (a trip around the GP Circuit is a must do) then perhaps up one of the famous "cols" from the Monte Carlo Rally. The "Stelvio" is perhaps favorite.

I've completed the trip many times in "moderns" but never in the Ferrari.

Lets hope its reliable!!

I drove my 512TR from Miami to CT last May. then I had to drive from Watkins Glen back to Boston in rain ALL the way, I crawled along at 60 & Every1 blew past me cus over 60 the rear got very loose, not what u want in a bloody monsoon in your Ferrari.
I also did the Forza Mille V12 rally which was more like 1300 miles, lots of fun & great food

There is no question that if you break down you will be down for the count. More and more items for 308s are being discontinued. The best advice would be, especially when ignition is concerned would be to up grade your ignitions to a more reliable with parts available system. The rest of the car is pretty reliable. A fuel pump would probably be the next common item that would leave you stranded so a spare would be a good investment. I cannot believe that the ignition parts are so scarce and should be the most commonly available parts. After I get my 308 back together I plan on driving it back and forth to my Florida home about 525 miles one way. If I cannot use it and depend on it then I don't want it.

I am curious. How many of you would take your
car on a long trip(more then 250 miles)? I live
in Indianapolis and am thinking of
taking my car (83 308) to Harrisburg P.A.-- about
550 miles. The P.A turnpike is a long winding
highway and would be a nice drive. Two things that
worry me: The car breaking down and being standed
with no mechanic near by, and getting
caught in nasty weather or -- heaven forbid -- a hale storm! I am especially worried about being
stranded in the middle of B.F.E.
