Bret, you're right, a similar study was done in Europe regarding what you posted- the factory does pollute more. But, here's the catch...big corporations can always go where there is no EPA standards or minimal and where there is cheaper labor. Heck it happens right now.

Plus the engery it would take to crush them

It seems to me that you would potentially waste more energy than you gained. The combustion engine I would bet is more efficient than heating, powering, cooling, maintaining, etc a factory to produce enough cars to satisfy a law like this. Even if you 100% all the parts of the car, all the energy needed to make them originally would be wasted.

Well, they managed to do it in Japan, where cars over 5 years old are near impossible to re-register. But I don't think it could happen in the good old USA !

Just imagoine what that does to resale value...LOL

Ads would read:

BMW 143 days old, new $ 65,000 now $ 15,000 obo.

or

KIA, 455 days old, more warranty than you are allowed to drive!

I've read that if it becomes law, it will not necessarily "ban" cars. Rather, it would charge higher premiums for insurance, registration, yada-yada...for older vechicles- thus forcing consumers to buy newer, fuel efficient, LEV, ZEV vehicles, or hybrids.

I will not happen. Older than five years???? HA! The NADA & the public will never allow it to become law. It's like Willis360 said, "Stupid politicians..."

Has to be an urban legend. Who do you think drives more cars over 5 years old, Democrats or Republicans.

Maybe we should eliminate all politicians "over 5 years old", although most would escape by claiming that we ment "over the mentality level of a 5 year old".

Nice Mitchel. I listen to it all the time in the Fcar. I started listening to Pink Floyd lately when driving too which is hot, they're a great band.

Martin:

By home grown I meant a McVeigh type. It appears that the stuff used came from one of our weapons labs. The methods used are similar to those letters sent to abortion clinics in the south, and apparently the FBI are looking at those people. It is interesting to note that only democrats received the letters with the disease in them.

And all those parts the big 3 shelves and the service write ups,and the 150,000 mile cars starting to really guzzle the gas n use lucrative oil.The top 5% of this country wouldnt go for that at all......

Martin:

The latest thought on the anthrax is that whoever did it was home grown. I've heard that the FBI knows who, but doesn't have the proof to arrest them.

Bret,
That Rush CD is in my car right now, and I listened to that very song while I was at lunch. A song I have lived by and love. I actually saw the video for that song Red Barchetta, and there is a red 166MM in the video! No kididng!

Sounds like the song Red Barchetta by Rush.

Maybe the Anthrax letter had nothing to do with Sept 11 after all?

Maybe it was a classic car collector!

I guess he should close all companies/plants that operate with 5 year old pollution control and waste control equipment also, until they upgrade to the latest methods offered. ......this would never pass.

Guys:

This is a crazy rumor, probably started by someone with an axe to grind with the democrats. Think about what a 5 year ban would do: over 50% of the vehicles would be forced off the road. Not very likely. More importantly, the smog laws we use today are identical to those used 5 years ago.

Crazy rumors with no substance.

That will never get to be a law. Someone needs to take ole Tom Daschel for a ride in some nice old cars. Then someone take him in a F40 and scare the living crap out of him.

I was unsuccessful, thus far, with the Tom Daschle bill. A similar bill, Senate Bill AB 1390 is still in the works, I did find this interesting website: Council of Vehicle Associations/ Classic Vehicle Advocate Group, Inc.

at
http://www.covacvag.org

check out the pictures of their mobile "smog dog" they have up in Jersey. It's in a link named Roadside Emissions Checkpoints.

I'll keep searching for ya guys/gals
