I think that LoJack thing is a good idea.

I already have the hidden switch. Maybe that is why they did not take the van.

I think the rest depends on what a person wants to do.

If one just uses a vehicle for afternoon runs, for special business days, and on the track, rarely leaving the stable overnight, then an alarm makes no sense. This is a very valid use for a Ferrari.

However, I want to do all this and so much more.
I want to blast several hundred miles through winding mountain roads, and then stay overnight at a special Inn. Then next day, more fun. So, away from stable a fair amount of time.

This is more into alarm needs.

Although I have one of the better insurance companies, USAA, I still have had problems getting them to fix break in damage to my satisfication. This of course is far less than replacing the vehicle.

Besides my corporation's and others' expensive equipment, I many times have priority information.
It makes more sense to avoid theft if possible.

If installed by others, I would watch them very closely.

However, since I can design a world wide computer network for 8,000 users, I can install an alarm system.

Viper used to not like users installing their own.

This mail order discount car audio firm does not mind users installing. They seem to be high quality at first glance. Hence my interest.

If someone wants your car - they will get it. No one even listens to car alarms anymore! The best thing to do is have a hidden switch that shuts off fuel or electrical ......something like that. I pull my battery cable if the car will sit for a while. I FEAR having some young kid tearing apart the dash to install and alarm........the only way I'd have one is if it was a GPS tracking system.

Frank, I think you are right on. That is what insurance is for. I also sometimes have expensive things in vehicles, but the bottom line is that if someone wants badly enough to take either the things or the car they are going to do it, alarm or no alarm.

Not totally a good solution. Agreed Value works fine for a total loss, but for a partial loss it is worthless.

Also the loss of time, emotional energy, feeling of being violated, etc.

If you are like me, you many times carry expensive things in a vehicle.

An alarm system is a good line of first defense. It can save time, hastle, and money.

I have used Viper in the past with good luck, but I do not know the current state of the technology. The experience made me think I should revisit the technology.

Of course it gives little protection if not activated. In this case a day of skiing, met nice woman, nice dinner, a little wine, taking her home (husband out of town), alarm not turned on, etc.

I am only human.

Buy "agreed value" comprehensive insurance. I'd much rather have the money to replace the car than the car that a thef has screwed up trying to steal.

What does the list think are currently the best alarm systems?

In the past, Vipers seemed to be good.

How good are the units from that big mail order car radio company - cannot think of their name at the moment?

Thanks, Dave Wapinski
