Yikes! Every once in a while I see a few advantages in the midwest. No front plates required in my states. Hoorah! |

Here in Oregon front plates are required but I'll be damned if I'm going to bore holes in the 360. Haven't been stopped in 2 yrs driving it or when driving my 355. However I do know of someone who was ticketed and the fine was astronomical-$300 and I am told (heresay) that the fine is higher now. If stopped I would probably tell the truth rather than it is on order etc. |

We have front plates here too, but I've seen most exotics that had the plates trimmed, only the numbers/letters showing. That is what counts in the identity, not the state/province name. Key info placed on the plates (like reg. tags) are always installed on the rear plate and that is always full-sized... And what the cops see first... I have my front plate on, it hardly sticks out in the way of air-flow (as that rubber bumper is pretty THICK) and actually makes it look good. |

I live in NJ and front plates are required. However, I have never had a problem when taking the car through a state inspection station nor when twice pulled over for speeding. Incidentally, on both occasions I was going at least 30 mph over the posted speed limits and only got one verbal and one written warning. Both troopers checked the front of the car but nothing was mentioned about the front plate. |

I've been pulled over three times, none of the time had I done anything wrong. I think just checking on a red Ferrari being out late at night with a kid driving was the reason for pulling me over, or to look at it. Once was actually in NY state come to think of it. Neither time did the cop even mention that my car wasn't inspected, so giving you a ticket for no plate is the work of a true Ahole. Knock on wood about this whole pressing my luck thing, and I will get it inspected (after a year and a half without it) once I'm done with the rebuild. |

Thanks guys, I keep the front plate behind the seat. I guess it would make sense if your home state doesn't require the plate, you shouldn't get ticket in a state that does require it. We shall see... |

Bill: It was somewhat funny I went through a safety inspection checkpoint and there were three cops standing side by side. The First cop asked me if I realized that my car didn't have a front plate? I answered yes and told him that the part (front license plate holder) was on order. (I lied hoping that it would buy me some leniency.) It almost worked the first cop responded that I should check back to see if it had come in. He was just getting ready to motion me on when the second cop points to me and says..."why don't you pull over there and get your license and registration out" I figured that they were going to check my license and registration and let me off with a verbal warning........Yeah right. He came back with a ticket....In my opinion he seemed like a d*ick. Most other cops would have waved me on. Kevin '87 328GTS Saratoga NY |

If your car is registered in a state that doesnt have a law requiring front plates you dont need one in any state. |

If WA does not require a front place than willis should not get a ticket in CA. I also think that if WA did require a front plate they still can't give him a ticket in CA - i.e what CA state law would he be breaking - this unless there is a CA law that all cars from other states with a front plate law are required to have front plates. |

Willis: You could get a ticket and be fined. However, if you haven't been stopped for something else, like speeding, etc., and you have the plate with you, the answer is probably not. I drive my 355 without a plate, but I keep the plate in the car. I have been stopped in SF because of the plate, because they want the front plate on so that the photo tickets for red light running will work. Outside of San Francisco, I think you are probably ok. |

My friend hasnt had a front plate on his camaro since he got it new 2 years ago. He has gotten two tickets for this but he just tapes it on and goes to the police station and they dismiss the ticket. I agree some cars look better without them, so i guess you will just have to find a way to temporarily attach the plate each time you get a ticket unless you dont mind spending the 20 bucks or whatever it is. |

Hi, Kev--say, I've never run a front plate on my sportscar and have been stopped a number of times for various reasons. However, I was asked twice if I had the other plate in the car with me ( which I always keep under the seat) . No tickets were ever issued ( for that, anyway!). One trooper told me to be sure to keep the second plate in the car. I'd say that your ticket is an anomaly. |

I don't have a front plate on my 360. Would I get fined if I drive my car to California? |

Fine just went to $100 in CA. To fix it you must actually put the plate on and go to the local DMV or find a cop able to do a vehicle imspection. -Ben |

I don't think a license plate would effect the aerodynamics, unless you were going really really fast! =) |

It's usually a $20 fine, no points. I have on my 308 that works well, a PO put it on. It's basically a waste though because there is no way you could see it on the car driving by. I also wonder if it affects the aerodynamics of the radiator, I don't think it does, but you never know. |

This is for Nika... Maybe the reason I don't get tickets or problems with the front plate is because I, like most cops are knuckle draggers. Dan |

We are suppose to have a front plate in California. The cops usually do not stop you for that on exoctics. Every cop that has looked at the 348 close up has never once mentioned the front plate. I've never been bothered even though they have had many excuses to pull me for speeding. One night I unknowingly had a CHP follow me while I was doing just under 100 mph down US101. I moved into the far right lane to turn off onto CA25. It was then I discovered the CHP following me, as he pulled along side the Ferrari and gave me a smile. I almost sh1t. Dan |

Just looked at that yesterday. In NJ we must have a plate on the front. As the 328 was in NJ before I purchased it, it had two holes drilled in under the front bumper. The top two holes in the plate is where it was attached. This made it low and tilted back, but legal. I have never had a problem and the plate is not stopping any air flow. As that goes, it can hardly be read at the angle it's on. I noticed this because my wife finally got the plates I ordered for her and I put them on this weekend. Plates: HIGHORS John |

I keep my plate on the passenger front visor...fold down to view. I have been told it is not legal but have never had a problem. |

I run in IL with no front plate because there's no place to put it (72 Lotus Europa) and it would be really ugly. I could wire it so it hangs under the air dam I suppose...I haven't been pulled over yet but I'm practicing my excuses. I like the "It's on order from England; you know it's a 72 and parts are hard to get...." one the best so far! |

Ken I run a front plate on my 308 GTB and live in NY. I made the plate holder and fashioned it from the bracket in the parts catalog. It hangs flush with the bottom of the grill opening and goes down on a sharp back angle. It is still above the lower front rad. sheetmetal and does not scrape the ground. Doesn't look to bad but based on talks with so NYSP friends you'll only get fined a few times and if they see the same problem on the police computers when the stop you they may impound the car. I don't run a front plate of either Ferrari I have, TR and 328GTS nor do I have one on my E-type or the 911S. Haven't had much of a problem with the local federalies, so far for the past few years. I do run one on the daily drivers and the rest of the collection. The plates just look terrible on some cars. This is a somewhat rural area and the open winding roads are conducive to spirited driving. Front plates look just about as good as bumper stickers on a Ferrari! |

All cars from Ontario have to have a front plate - it drives me crazy since it is the only thing that scrapes as I back out the driveway - The agonizing SOUND it makes is horrible as if I tore off the front of the car!!!! I'm tempted to take the bloody thing off!!!! Nika |

i've been stopped once for no plate in front, and on a few occasions when stopped for speeding, questions were raised about the absence of a front plate. usually, when i explain that it requires a special bracket, that it was ordered, that you know how it is trying to get something made specially in Italy, etc., the officer laughs... that has not prevented a bunch of speeding tickets, though.... |

I went through a routine safety inspection checkpoint today. The cops looked at the front of my 328, pulled me over and wrote a ticket for no front plate. I see where this subject has come up before on FerrariChat. However I did not see where anybody addressed the consequences of not complying with the law. I'm sure that there would be a fine, but I'm not sure if they would assess points for such an infraction. Anybody have any experience with this subject? If I do decide to mount the plate, does anybody have a picture or two of what it looks like? (I like the idea of using snap ties) I'm somewhat concerned that the plate will cut down on the flow to the radiator. Any input will be appreciated Thanks, Kevin Saratoga NY '87 328GTS |
