Yeah, the funny thing was when I saw him coming, I assumed he had all the whistles and bells. I'm in no way a road racer, but something about this made me say 'screw it', and I actually expected him to toast me. That's my excuse, and I'm sticking with it!

Take heart Jack. He probably just wants to smell your exhaust and hear the V8 howl. Or, he just wants to be close to his dream machine, and savor every second of it before it disappears into the horizon.

I was taking a friend for a quick spin yesterday, and while entering the on ramp (a long, tree-hidden one) a guy in an older BMW 5-Series pulled up on my a** really aggressively. So I just floored it and that was that. Thought to myself that if he's going to try s**t like that, he should have bucked up for an M5.

I had a yoyo in a plain jane lumpy taurus try to race me today. It was a teenager driving - it had cool fog lamps screwed onto the top of the bumper as well. He followed me off the highway onto a 360 degree offramp. I decided to leave him behind and watched him struggle as he nearly rolled his car in the turn. I eased off once I was on the main road at a 70mph cruzing speed when he came up to me probably flat out and rode my bumper while I just ignored him. He passed me like a fool to show mw how fast his ill handling pail was and I just let him go. Its hard to resist the temptation to race and embarass a looser like that but I managed for the most part. Im sure there will be many more encounters like that.

It's great to share the sound and fury of a Ferrari with enthusiasts! Just be careful that they aren't suckering you. There might be a policeman lurking nearby that you don't know about!

Talk of being followed, harrassed etc, has got me rather nervous about future Ferrari ownership! It would not be enough to stop me, but it is definitely something I'm beginning to think about.

Brian you hit it right on the nose..its soo true.. i dont get alot of people commenting on my car when im driving because of the time of day i drive it, but when I do its usually positive....I would never want to ignore an enthuisist..remember people that it will usually make their day if they ask to hear Enzo's italian orchestra and you let them hear it :-)

I always choose to assume the best...

One day a guy in a delivery panel truck pulled up next to me at a stop light and motioned me to put down the window. He said "Race me." I chuckled at the absurdity and said, "yeah, right." He said, "No, I just want to listen as you take off." Just a friendly enthusiast. I think everyone here likes the sight and sound of a Ferrari gunning it...

So, next time a ricer seems to want to race you, consider that he's just an enthusiast, loves your car, and would love to watch and listen as you accelerate hard. Just smile and acknowledge them and they usually won't push further... as long as you ignore them, they'll keep trying to get your attention.

Whatever you do, don't race them on the street... way too much to lose. When someone does want to race, I usually invite them to the next autocross in town.

(Of course, the above doesn't change the danger and the care that must be taken as those enthusiasts make unsafe choices in attempt to get close.)

BTW, I actually have had very few try to race me in the Ferrari... far more try to race my 911 or M3. But I have waaayyyy more people giving me thumbs-up and wanting to talk to me about the Ferrari... like 1000:1 ratio. Its actually fairly pleasant so far... almost none of the negativism that others in this thread have gotten.

Good luck to all!

Andrew - great story isn't it :-) ?

It happened on Park Lane, central London at the traffic lights nearest to the famous Dorchester hotel. If you don't know the area, its a fairly upmarket part of London with loads of traffic and you tend to see quite a lot of supercars there..... all the better to stage such an event.

Driver was so cool, he probably chucked the blonde out himself for being so uptight, a few yards up the road....

I get a few ricers do the same thing a lot of times revving their engines and for those who follow me near home I go the speed limit and take them to my favorite road of 25mph turns and smoke them goodbye everytime or sometimes I'll just pull over and say "whatsup?" and usually they get embarrased and say "nice ride!" I like putting dumb people in their place. They can rev their engines but all it does is make me laugh, it's obvious they have very little knowledge and experience of real driving, something you learn in racing school- discipline & respect... I school a few customers who come to my shop and teach them those things and they realize what's proper. Remember it's usually the youngsters that do these to you or numb minded people and they just were not taught properly that's all.

Best solution is to either ignore them, or if they get to crazy, deal with them. My favorite ploy is when they get too crazy is to get them behind me, speed up, and when approaching another car, speed up, and swerve at the last second. Sometimes they avoid the rear ender, sometimes not. Even if they do avoid the other car, it keeps them from getting too frisky.

You're better off avoiding them, but when you can, you have to find a way to deal with the testatrone, and scaring the living sh*t out of them is one effective way that works for me.

"Those ricers are the least of your worries. Soccer moms in minivans, hopped up trucks, delivery vans, work trucks with loose cargo. Those are the ones you have to watch out for. Some will weave in and out of traffic to catch you."

Those glass-pack billy-badd trucks always seem to have drivers with a case of major assholeitis. They've got to be the worst.

The rice boys are just annoying. Sometimes they will do stuff that endangers you and the other drivers, so be wary.

I had one ricer actually get all pissed off at me for just driving down the road. He was shouting nasty, profane things and telling me what a "piece of sh*t" my car was, etc. In this situation, there was no way I had cut him off or anything, so he just had a major bug in his butt. After his little tirade, I just looked over and blew a kiss at him. He was stunned... hehe :-) ... homophobia can be a useful tool! (for the record, I'm straight).

The other day, somebody walked up as I was getting out of my car at a resturaunt and asked me (in an annoyed tone) "What did you do to deserve a car like that?". ?! Deserve? Who the heck are you? I hate that word: "Deserve". It's a hallmark of the DNC's class warfare strategy...

Michael--it's already been a month. When can I expect to start getting flashed?!

Jammy--Basically, Americans are weird. We act out our insecurities in strange ways, one of which apparently is to harangue people on the road who drive nicer cars than you.

Manu--That burnout probably looked pretty cool, but I don't know if my wallet will accept that as a solution for me. Sounds like it would get pricey after a couple dozen goes.

Guys,

Got a great story about how to deal with Ferrari reactions.

(slightly off topic because it doesn't involve racing).

Walking down Park Lane, on a warm summer evening, I saw a F355 Spyder with the hood down, stop at the lights next to the Dorchester with a beautiful blonde in the passenger side. A few drunk kids spot the car and start bowing to the ground doing the 'we're not worthy' while shouting it loudly at the driver.

Everyone was watching the very trendy-looking driver - everyone at the lights, in the cars and on the street and coming out of the hotel. I was laughing hysterically. The blonde was terribly emabrrassed and appeared way to 'trendy' to deal with it.

What I saw next put a smile on my face for the rest of the month. The driver evidently embarassed at the excessive attention and 'we're not worthy bowing' smiled, gave the kids the thumbs up, revved the car to sky and dropped the clutch. His Ferrari just sat there screaming, smoke pouring of the wheels. The traffic around it didn't move even when the lights turned green - everyone was watching the show.

the way too cool blonde looked absolutely terrified, and I could see her grabbing the seat - as the burnout continued she proceeded to turn green as if she was about to puke while the kids stop bowing and stood there stupified (like I was).

When the driver finally decided to go, his F355 was fishtailing, black lines of molten rubber everywhere -The F355 howled away into the distance, and I imagined the blonde probably puked about 200 meters up the road.

Those ricers are the least of your worries. Soccer moms in minivans, hopped up trucks, delivery vans, work trucks with loose cargo. Those are the ones you have to watch out for. Some will weave in and out of traffic to catch you. All the while their vehicles are tipping back and forth ready to roll over. When I see this, I usually move to the right, slow down, and give them a lot of room. No sense trying to drive faster to get away. It just encourage them to follow and endanger others and/or themselves.

My father was down this past weekend so I took him for his "first ride in a Ferrari". Before I even left the driveway, I told him that some people act like idiots around the car. Sure enough, I had a guy follow me for 8-10 miles through all kinds of back streets, residential neighborhoods, etc. until he could get beside me to ask about the car.

I've had motorcycles rev thier engines and do wheelies (that happened with my father in the car also) trying to get my attention.

BTW, just uploaded a picture into my profile. You'll see that my 456 is red; I was originally looking for a blue one(!). Long story but the moral is that there's a big difference between theoretical and actual.

This 'race you' stuff must be an American thing since this has not happened to me. I was quite surprised by the exaggerated courtesy other drivers give these cars. When they see the nose in their rearview, or hear it, other cars pretty much leap out of the way. Ferrari's are not a common sight on our roads, so I think most people let you by to get a better look.

Mind you, I try to be courteous too. There seems to be an expectation that, if you own one of these you are a bit of a w****r, and I enjoy dispelling this one. If people are pointing at you (especially kids), I just smile & wave. With young women, I do the same, remembering as I do that most of the moolah is in my wifes' name.

All sounds normal. In a TR it gets even more weird just because of its spacy looks. The best is when babes flash you !! I always gives a thumbs up and show a little respect to most and it seems to stop the weird behavior. At a stop light today, actually put down my window and was chatting with a very happy teenager who said he never sees Trs on the road. The best part was his Mom - I bet if I were single I could get some -- the look on her face -- she loved the car and would mucho for a ride. :-) I love my ferrari.

This is "No Big Problem." Simply look over at them, smile, and shake your head. They will get the message. They know what you are driving and you do not have to prove it. The name "Ferrari" speaks for itself.

Matt, I'm sure before long, you'll feel like you've seen it all. I've only had my 328 for a little over a month, and it evokes strange behavior from people. Moms in minivans next to me squeal away from stop lights. Guys on Vespas tailgate me to get a better look. Bicyclists swerve in front of me for god-knows-why. Oh yeah, then there's the teenage street racers to contend with...

The same thing happened to me yesterday. I was at a stoplight behind a few cars and I heard a buzzy noise over my shoulder. I glanced back to see the front end of a Civic with it's stock 14 inch wheels. The guy wouldn't leave me alone. I finally punched it in 2nd gear and he proceeded to do the same. I then slammed on the brakes, turned into my parking lot, and went to work. I DID notify my security guard that someone was harrassing me in my Ferrari though. He likes to be the big man of the building and keep an eye on my car.

Yup, people get worked up over the presence of Ferrari(s). Get used to the attention. Other drivers will get more aggressive (instinctive reaction?) and speed up around you, even if you're just cruising near the speed limit in traffic. Keep enough distance between you and any yahoos trying to play games with you. Don't get drawn in to their games. Eventually, they'll get bored and leave you alone.

If you think you're being followed home, don't go right back to your house. Pull over and let the car go by and watch it go away.

Sometimes, if i have the chance to chat with drivers of these dream machines, i ask them all sorts of questions about their coffee can exhausts, the little blue lights on the hood, those chain link license plate frames, and the cool "No Fear" stickers on their windows. If you show respect, they might overlook the fact that you are driving an Italian exotic.

Seriously, people drive like complete freaking morons in the presence of a ferrari. This weekend on the way to WWoC you should have seen the crazy people were doing like tailgating, trying to pass, etc.

Get used to the mosquito sounding civics, acuras and mitsus buzzing about. I think the bigger the wing they have on the back, the more horsepower they believe they have. Oh don't forget if they have instruments on the hood or across the dash they are double trouble. Just ignore them eventually they will buzz away.

I have the tendency to follow some of the F-Cars I see on the road because I love to hear their exhaust, and how the car holds the road. If I am lucky, I will be able to get the drivers attention to give him the "Thumbs-Up."

For some reason, the civics, Hondas, Nissans, etc really get their dander up when they see a Ferrari. Or, it could be that these are the cars kids drive and they're more prone to do something stupid.

Get used to it; it happens all the time. Just don't make them do something dumber than the things they're already doing. Be particularly careful when there's more than one person in the other car as the driver will become both distracted and will try to show off.

Remember if you're tempted to race: DON'T. Just because they're acting dumb doesn't mean they deserve to have an accident and kill themselves or someone else. If stupidity were a capital offense we wouldn't have enough cemeteries!

I was just driving to the corner store in my new Ferrari 456 and some guy in a Civic kept trying to race me. I ignored him but he wouldn't stop, he kept driving really fast past me, then he would slow down and rev really loud beside me. It got really annoying. Since I am new to Ferrari (2 days) ownership I'm not shure, is this normal and something I just have to get used to. Does anyone else have the same problem?

Thanks,
Matt
