Yes John, the number is stamped on the frame on the right side of the engine. And Kelly, my car did remember your car, it was the fellow with lower lip hanging out ( I have moved in the bumpers like euro style) :)

Jorma,

Does your car have the entire 17 digit number stamped on the frame?

Mine car is 33529 and it was manufactured in September 1980. It is a USA model. Have somebody a closer number than this? ( 308 GTSi )

your car may be an import. They can not be checked either. Just for reference.

Check on the engine compartment if there is a full VIN stamped into the frame.

By law, the ONLY place VINs can be authorized is DOT. This is done in conjunction with SAE. Whatever CarFax or the states do is subserviant to DOT. I've been there. This is not the first time CarFax or any state has been wrong. Call 202-366-2832 and ask for the VIN content person, not the self-designated Ferrari "expert". Whatever they tell you is the final determinator.

The car was produced in May of 1980. I am aware that an "A" indicates 1980, however, places like CarFax and our own licensing department come back with an invalid year since they believe all production began in 1981 (with the letter "B"). I wonder if the government was somehow involved in this?? ;-)

I checked you VIN with my Ferrari identifier. Your car is a 1980. "A" is for 1980. Source: Ferrari and NADA.

A00333701 is what was on the title. I have tried to run car faxes on my car with no luck. I'm told that I would have to take the car in for an inspection by the state police to have the title changed. cost of about $40.00. But, I have just about the same vin as you and nothing works. The car does show that it was built in September of 1980. I'm told in America that would make it an 81 but in Italy it's an 80. Look at you driver side label and see when your car was made. Call me if you need any advise, i've done the major service my self. And please post a picture.

Is it possible you car is a late 80 which may have caused overlap on the new style vin that was phased in for all of the 81's? Strange things happen with Ferrari's. My 79 is registered as an 80. Some of my Ferrari servicing history shows it as an 80 GTB on some invoices and 79 on others with the same vin. You can still break down your vin using the 81 decoding.

We have just purchased a 1980 GTSi #32179. It has a VIN number and all the VIN checkers say that cars prior to 1981 are not valid. This seems a little strange since the year digit for 1981 is the letter "B" and some sources are showing that the letter "A", like ours is a valid year. The VIN is ZFFAA02A0A0032179.

Does anyone else have a pre 1981 car with a VIN number as above, or are all of them just the serial number???

I am soooo confused.
