I'll second what Paul's saying. I was fiddling around with the bumpers once and realized that those shocks indeed are capoot. I like representing the US and all, but at 50lbs a piece I think it might be nice to switch to a fiberglass version that could either be painted red or black for that US look. How come no one makes a fiberglass version that would fit the US 308 as a bolt on in place of the stock bumpers? It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to make them.

It was me who did the post on drilling the rear shocks to push them in, and it worked like a charm. Look for my post for directions. As for the front bumper I had already changed it to fiberglass (US Bumpers weigh 49 lbs. each).

For those of you who think your 20 year old shocks will still work in a 5 mph impact hears my 2 cents ..... They won't do a thing, after 10 years there junk, seals will blow out on impact.

Great. I like the idea of keeping the stock shocks for the future. (If I do this)

Can the stock bumpers be painted successfully? I am unsure how well the rubber will accept paint, or how well the paint will stay on. Color match will be tough as well; my car has been repainted.

Jerry there are a few ways to do this. But which ever way you select you realize you will eliminate the 5 mph bumper integrity. That being said you can drill a hole in the shock (as far back as possible) and push the bumber back until the amber turn signals line up with the nose of the car. Then drill another hole and put in a screw to hold ths shock. By the way it is best to do the drilling with the shock removed and watch out because it is under pressure. Most of the shocks have a "foam "type filler in them. The other method is to have fixed mounts made to replace the shocks . Measure how far you want the bumper to go in and have the replacement tube (shock)cut to that length. This way you can keep the shocks for the future in case you want to go OEM. Steve

I would like to revisit the thread: Technical Q&A: Archive 2001: Archive - May thru November 2001: Euro Bumpers for 308QV.

Magoo had an exchange on the euro vs US speck bumpers. One of the options that was discussed was the drilling of the bumper shocks to achieve a closer profile in the rear of a 308QV. Magoo asked, based on the observations of his own car, if the same could be done to the front bumper (although, we all know a purest would never do it). The response was it cant be done to the front bumper. WHY? I looked on my car (so great to say that. Me=newbe owner) and it looks like an easy way to achieve a similar look. Can someone tell me why this cant be done? I have a 308GTSI.
