Bill Sawyer is the winner!

Ron Hickman originally worked for Ford as a clay modeler and moved up to stylist when the others jumped-ship to Standard-Triumph. In 1956, he was head-hunted by Colin Chapman to model the Peter Kirwan-Taylor "Elite" drawings. He quit Ford in 1958 and joined Lotus as a development engineer.

His main project was the development of the Elan and the Elan Plus 2 from the ground-up.

He created the Work-Mate in 1961 by butchering a Swedish chair (no joke). He offered the design to several companies in 1967, but was rejected (even Black & Decker at first!). He marketed it on his own and after seeing how successful he was, B&D bought the design...

Henry Maudslay invented the Micrometer and was the Father of the Standard Motor company in England. I don't think that is the answer you are looking for though.

It's not exactly a tool, but there was a guy from Team Lotus who designed those fold up work benches we all seem to have in our garages.

(Frustrated that I can never answer Ed's questions, its my turn now to "show off" )

There is a person who designed a well-known British sports car and after leaving that company, went on to create one of the world's most popular tools.

-Name the guy
-Name the car
-Name the tool
