About the 512 TR Spider: although I've never heard any "official" stories that the factory made Spiders of the 512 TR, I also heard stories from reliable sources that there are indeed three Spiders made. They were probably made for the Sultan of Brunei. Steve, if you see the car again, could you please check if the car has an automatic gearbox??? Colours and the VIN (on the steering column) would be appreciated too! TIA!

Mitchel, I think that you're confusing a few things. The "512 TR Speciale" were all Coupes and not Spiders. A total of 15 cars were made for the Japanese market only to commemorate that Cornes and Co was the importer in Japan for 15 years. The cars were almost like normal 512 TRs, with a few exceptions: dark red colour (I think Rosso Monza Metallizzato), special wheels and "SF" shields on the fenders.

Ok, I'll bite. I believe the car Steve saw was indeed a 512TR convertible, called the 512 Speciale...and only 3 were produced by Ferrari, only for the Japanese market.

Steve, I see. I just didn't see it posted on IM's or Car City's web sites. Both dealers are usually pretty quick about posting cars they are selling.

The convertible in Hong Kong was done by Ferrari -hence the steep price tag as supposedly there was only 3 made in the world. I forget where the other two are - one of the oil states.
Chris A - Vins in Happy Valley have got a mondial for sale - I think they are asking 338k? My first Ferrari drive was a 348 Spider from Vins - enjoyed it, but I didn't really trust the dealer (can you trust any?) as the service records were missing and it hadnt been serviced at IM

Peter, go to the service center and check out the Monidal - the 512 should be there - I believe car city are selling it. Speaking of carcity I think they also have a mondial for sale

I saw a 456 convertible in the pits at the Laguna Seca historics last year. Someone told me that the same aftermarket mob that did the Testarossa's Miami Vice style did it. It looked like a very professional job and IMHO its probably the best looking 456 I've seen. It could be the same people who have done the car in HK. Does anyone remember the name of these guys. My memory can't

Hey Chris! Yes, I did buy the Mondial you mentioned. First Ferrari and I like it very much, though Testarossa (512TR) is still my fav. Car being serviced right now, so haven't been able to drive it frequently.

According to the VIN number it should be a 3.2. If I remember it correctly, it also says Mondial 3.2 on the back as well. I will also take a look at the dashboard to reconfirm because the shape is slightly different between a QV and 3.2.

Hi Peter K., by any chance did you just purchase your Mondial QV from Italian Motors? I was going to see a 86 Mondial QV they had advertised several weeks ago but was freaked out when the salesman confirmed that it was truly a QV and not a 3.2 even though it was a 86. I picked up a NSX instead just to experience why everyone is raving about it.

Well if you did buy the car I mentioned, good luck with it.

Cheers

No it was a 512 TR, not a BB.The license plate was "DPD" . sounds like a Hk or Uk license plate! The car is right hand drive ..if only i knew how to post a pic ..i have one from barchetta.cc

Really stunning car .

It won't sell at that price. If it's for HK$450K, then it may sound interesting. But, a 512TR convertible is a bastardized Ferrari, which is unlikely to retain value as time goes along.

Besides, you could import one from Europe, pay the 60% first registration tax and still be cheaper.

For that price you can have your own 512 convertible built and get a nice 575 MM..!
There's a german company that does it . And Straman im sure will do it for cheaper too !

Btw was it a 512 TR? or M or even a BB?

A blue one was at the Ferrari 50th in Roma .

I saw it in the Ferrari service center in Kowloon- which is IM but not the IM show room.
I believe that Car City in Happy Valley are selling it. Its not the 550 Barchetta.
Think its a 1994?

Are you sure it is the 512 Convertible or a Barchetta?! Is it in Italian Motors?

Yesterday at the local Ferrari service centre in Hong Kong, I spied a 512 Convertible - apparently its one of only three ever made.
Its up for sale - asking price about US$450k!!
