I saw a yellow Viper out of the corner of my eye when I cut thru a parking lot yesterday. He seemed to catch up to me later to check me out. When he pulled next to me at a lite, I waved to him and was going to say "nice car" but he did everything he could to not look at me. I guess he didn't think I was worth a wave....

From personal encounters on the road and in the parking lot:

SW Busch NASCAR - (owners shop/aquaintance) we exchanged "nice car" then inspected each others car.
Diablo - (aquaintance/cross from NASCAR shop) "nice car" and returned favor of a ride
Ferrari - (st) smile and a wave back
Porsche - (fwy) just a glance, older 911 a short sprint then a smile and wave exchanges (lol and one fist in the air from a boxter that got passed)
Lotus - hasn't occured yet
NSX - (fwy) just looked, (prk lot) smile and "nice car"
Viper - hasn't occured yet
Vett - (fwy/st/prk lot) look at car me then the car again, and then can't stop peeking at car
Mustang - (fwy) big smile and tumbs up, (st) smiles and stares
Cobra - (st) smile and a wave (prk lot) "nice car"
Saki burners - (fwy/st/prk lot) stares, finger pointing, engine revving
Camero - (fwy/st/prk lot) stares
Trans Am - (fwy/st/prk lot) stares
BMW M3 - (st) long look
BMW 325 - (fwy) pointing "your engines on fire" a "thanks" from me, with a hang loose, then exiting as fast as I could, lol it was a rag the mechanic accidentally left on the muffler
Mercedes - (fwy) just a glance
Bentley - (fwy) didn't even faze him
300 ZX twin turbo - (prk lot) "nice car" then gave the very happy guy a ride around the block
Austin Martin - (st) just a look
Lexus - (fwy/st) reactions vary
Big Rigs (fwy) lol a look of "sh*t I almost ran over him"

Here are some photos of the F40 at Luigi's, in Montreal, in 1996.

I wouldn't doubt the fact that there are many cars in this country that are not allowed. Most are in the Ottawa/Montreal region as the vast majority of the owners are diplomats with immunity. But cars like the F40 aren't allowed, says so at Transport Canada. I'd really like to know who the owners are of these F40's and if the registration says "F40" on it. I bet you it won't.

The folks at Transport Canada (and primarily the RIV - Registrar of Imported Vehicles) are VERY picky. If its not on the list, you not only would not be able to register it, you most likely won't be able to bring it in at all.

I'll believe it when I see it. I'll be in Calgary in the spring/summer time...

Peter,

Trust me on this one. There is an F40 in Calgary. I personally know the broker who sold the car to the fellow that bought it.

I remember Kulu, my broker friend, saying that the car came from Montreal.

I have a hard time believing an F40 in Canada. Yes, Luigi Sports Cars in Montreal had one in the early '90's (I know I sat in it). But it was there for promotional/display purposes. It had Italian plates on it. Just like the Porsche 959 that was in the showroom for Autolux on St. Laurent Blvd. again in the early '90's. It had to leave after two years being in the country and could not be driven on the street.

I wouldn't put it past Luigi or the people at Autolux to slap a dealer plate on the car and take it for a spin around the block. But to sell and register the car into private hands? Something else was done and I don't think its quite legal.

Yep, the one in Marda Loop resides just outside the community center and is a deep red with beautifully kept tan interior (I was peering through the window). I wanna ride =/

When is World of Wheels? I keep getting conflicting reports of the timing of it.

If that 550 in Marda Loop is deep metallic red with tan interior, I have been for a ride in that car.
My uncle owns a high end clothing store, and I help him out on Saturdays, so all the pimpy cars usually end up there at least once during the summer. I am quite shameless, so while the customers are trying on the suits, I start talking cars and try to scam rides in them.

I dont really know Rana, (the guy with the F40) but I know who he is because he goes to the same church and is a memeber of the same community as me. My mom actually talks to him quite often when she see him at church as they grew up together in Africa.
He also drives around a silver twinner 993 turbo with a roll cage and 19 speedline wheels, a metallic red diablo and has a metallic red S 600 benz with some big pimpy wheels on it. You will most likely see him in the benz, he is an east indian guy with a pony tail.
My friend Kulu was the broker involved in getting the F40 for him, apparantly it came from Montreal and it still had the plastic on the seats.

If you go to world of wheels, Kulu will almost definatly have some sort of exotic there for the show.

In fact, most of the newer Ferrari and Lambos in Calgary have gone through Kulu.

James: I just did a search of the Canadian Lamborghini Registry (http://www.lamborghiniregistry.com/Clubs/Canada/CanadianRegistry.html) and there are:

1 espada s2
1 Jarama GTS
1 Countach LP400
1 Urraco P250

Currently registered on that website. I don't know the last day updated, but there's some interesting info for you anyways =)

James:

As far as I know, it looks like this summer is gonna be in the slushmobile, with the 360 most likely arriving in august or september. I have no clue what the delay is about but hey, 6 months, I can handle that.

Now, there is an F40 in Calgary? You absolutely MUST get me hooked up with that guy, as I would love to take some pictures of the F40 (avid amateur photographer I am)

I've never seen any diablos or F40's here in Calgary, although I have seen the 550 Maranello that resides in Marda Loop and quite a few 355's during the summer months when stampede is on. I've seen 2 360s, one yellow, one red, and, of course, seeing as we have a dealership right here in town, one HECK of a lot of Porsches of every type and shape, except GT1's and GT3's

Simon,

There are 4 diablos in Calgary that i know of.

THere is a metallic red one, the plate says "da bull" on it. It is owned by a fellow named Rana, who also owns the Ferrari F40.

There is a yellow one owned by a guy named Blake, who also owns a emerald green 1994 911 turbo 3.6

My buddy Kulu has a yellow one for sale, he also has various 355's, 360's and 911's for sale.

There is a black one that I saw cruising on Deerfoot last summer. He was going the opposite way, and I didnt see it again.

How is the search for the 360 coming along?? Is it still happening??

Well, here goes:

In calgary (when you can see 3 feet in front of you in the snow) from the drivers seat of a Chevy 1988 station wagon:

Ferrari - going to fast to even see if they waved or not to my jaw dropping and hitting the floor
S2000 - grin and VTEC it to 9K rpm as they pull ahead when I stare admiringly
Porsche - jaunty wave and then roar off ahead of me
Lamborghini - what? lamborghini's exist around Calgary?

Yep, I'm from the UK ,I'm really surprised that TVR's haven't made it in the US yet. I guess it might be a regulation issue. They're great in a straight line but no good on the twisties (that's Lotus territory) which we get a lot of here in England.

Willis is right, most exotic car drivers arent hard ons like people assume they are. Almost all of them ive met have been cool, from porsche to ferrari, and even lotus (rare around me) owners. One day i will be one of those cool owners who actually answers questions and explains things and tells stories to people who are willing to listen. I;ve heard some great car stories from muscle car drivers and exotic drivers alike that have been unbelieveable, funny and everything in between. The only thing that pisses me off is when i give the thumbs up to someone in a ferrari or something and they dont even honk back.

Thanks Willis, in reading my previous post, I think it may have come off a bit harsh. I don't feel that all exotic owners are SOB's. I just think that I've spent so much time relating to car enthusiasts in forums like this that I was a little surprised that not everyone wants to exchange greetings with perfect strangers on the roadways. I can respect that. It just makes me feel less inclined to keep initiating these exchanges.

So when people don't get nods or thumbs up from me, it may just mean that I just figure they'd rather not be bothered. Ah, to heck with it, what have I got to lose. I'll keep waving!
Willis Huang (Willis360)
Posted on Tuesday, February 05, 2002 - 6:23 pm:

Todd, don't feel that exotic car owners are a bunch of aloof SOBs. Most owners I've met are pretty decent people. I don't think you'd notice someone waving at you if you're busy trying to manage through the traffic ahead. There's a few times when I see a fellow sports car driver wave at me but I was unable to because I was shifting. Pedestrians and other motorists will holler at you. But what's more important? Turn and give the thumb up or avoiding crunching into the car ahead of you. You just can't please everyone in all circumstances.

Hello to all. I've been reading Ferrarichat for several months now, but have declined to participate as I do not yet own a Ferrari. If no one objects, however, I would like to participate from time to time as I find you all to be one of the best collaborations of car enthusiasts (Fcars and many others) I've discovered.

This topic especially moves me.

I am a Porsche owner and will be a Ferrari owner as soon as my means catch up to my ambition. I generally wave and give the thumbs up to most people driving exotic sports cars. In the last year, some of the cars I've given the wave and thumbs up to are 348, 360, 355, 550, TR, Countach, Diablo, Z8, 911, Boxster (if they look like they're having fun), Esprit, and NSX.

Guess what? Nuthin. Aside from occasional waves from Boxster owners, I get nuthin. The guy in the Diablo was someone I knew, and when I asked him why he didn't wave back, he said "that was you?"

Here's my consensus:
70% of people I wave and give the thumbs up too are either simply aloof, or do not feel that my gesture warrants any response.
10% of the people somehow politely acknowledge my enthusiasm.
20% of the people are complete jerks that give rude looks, and once I even got a disapproving shaking head (Silver 550).

I'VE GIVEN UP! I've decided that 90% of the people who have interesting, exotic cars don't hang out on the internet and talk about how great their cars are. By and large they don't appreciate any enthusiasm from other motorists, and those who do generally only want it from people of "equal" or "better" cars. They would prefer to just be left alone. So that's what I'll do. I now only gesture when gestured at first--about once a week, actually, but it may be because of the GF in the right seat :)

Incidentally, almost everyone I've met at the track is pretty cool, no matter what they're driving (914 to 360).

Hope this first post wasn't too cynical!

The P-cars drivers that I love, are the guy's ( not the woman ) who pull up at a light next to you and will not turn to look over at you. The woman on the other hand !!!! I was on 287 south from Mahwah and this wonderful looking lady in a 4S with NY plates that read CoCo drove next to me very spirited the entire way to 80 and 280. Very good driver, and just plain fun.

I do enjoy P-cars, Vette's etc who will race off the line in first with you then slow down to the speed limit just for fun so neither one of use get's a ticket.

I saw a cool kid (maybe like 20-23) in a Viper once. There was no one on the road except for the two of us (down the shore, two lanes each way). He saw me and slowed down, when I pulled next to him he nodded. We both knew he would kill me. He gestured to give it a little gas so I buried it in second gear, I pulled away initially but he caught me awfully fast. He nodded again and waved before I had to turn off. I just thought he was cool cause he wasn't a •••• or anything.
I also had another guy in an M3 stop to let me out of a spot (I was parallel parked and was pulling out). He literally stopped and waited for like 20 seconds, waving me to go ahead of him which was cool as hell. Some youngs guys like the Fcars I guess.

Porsche, Vette, and Viper drivers either nod, wave, flash the "peace" sign. Got quite a few thumbs up from other drivers too. Vans and SUVs are pretty bad and try to run you off the road.

Todd I like that police one. I'm now diving my Porsche hatred into two categories. I have come to the conclusion that I don't hate mature (whatever, 30, 40 somewhere in there) Pcar owners. But I still hate youngs ones, oh do I ever. I've waved to a couple of gray haired guys driving their Pcars before, they always waved back and honked. For the most part, I've noticed that the young ones always say something like oh taking out daddy's car again or some bs like that when sitting at a stop light, despite the fact that I don't look at them, rev the engine or anything. Their questioning usually invokes me to respond with something along the lines about taking daddy's dildo in the ass tonight.

As a Lotus owner:

Lamborghini - not happened yet!
Ferrari - Very posative enthusiasim.
Mustang/Vette/Camero etc. - Wants to drag race
Z3 - ignores me.
Lotus - Wave, flash, u-turn, chat etc...*S*

That's a pretty accurate summary, actually ! Just swap the lotus/ferrari ones round for a Ferrari owner.

I find you generally get respect nods from anyone with a decent REAL sports car, like the ones you mention (apart from p-car owners who ignore you).

The problem ones (who always want to race) are your 4wd Japanese 4 door boxes, or GTi sorts.

Mind you I even once got the nod from a sports bike .... once he'd caught up with me (he didn't like going above 130, not that I can blame him on a bike !)

Excuse a Lotus driver barging in on your discussion forum but I was wondering what kind of reaction you get from other cars on the road? From a Lotus perspective...

Ferrari - polite wave
Porsche - no reaction
Z3 - muted nod
MGF - envious stare
TVR - REV REV REV!
Lotus - Wave, flash, u-turn, chat etc..
