I would also keep the TR. In fact, I am going the other way: sold my '95 993 Coupe to buy a '89 Mondial t Cab. Owned an '85 Targa and a '90 Cab before that. I just don't like the 996s so bought an Italian rag top tourer instead. My 993 was a great car, but no more fun than the '90 Cab and I sure missed going topless.
Good luck whatever you decide!

Could get a Schwinn, too. But if it's either/or and daily driver is the primary criteria, the Porsche is the better call. Would agree with those who say you might miss the F-car, though.

Argyle,

I use to own a 96 C2 993. It was a very good car for the money. I think I would go for a 97 C2S. They are the last air cooled model. The 4 wheel drive is not really necessary and adds some weight.

Typical issues to look for include:
- rattle from the moonroof
- rattle from windshield
- oil leaks
- 3rd break light inop (if you see a car with that problem, don't assume it is a cheap fix, the rear window likely needs to be replaced)

Having own both, I believe that 993 are a lot more fun than normally aspirated 996.

I drive my 500hp Grand National to work. Smooth cruisin and when necessary it eats all Rice Burners for lunch. Low profile, very fast, reliable and comfortable. Like it better than my 993.

I would buy an old Chevy Lumina Van to drive to work. It is dependable, easy and carefree to park.( And you can get a good one for a couple thousand bucks ) Then you can drive your Ferrari just for fun. That's what I do.
Unless of course you really want to show off, in that case never mind.

I would buy a 1987-89 3.2L Porsche 911 for $25-28K or a 1995-1999 BMW M3 for $28K-$30K and keep the Ferrari if you can swing it. At the prices I quoted you should be able to find an excellent low mileage example of each car. Good Luck.

I am sure you feel something special when you drive your Ferrari. The looks and the comments you receive, the feeling of driving the ultimate sports car of the world. Do you think you will experience those same things in a Porsche. I would say you won't but then it is not my decision only my opinion. Regards,

argyleco:

fastradio2's experience is one man's experience. i've owned two 996s (both 2001s) and had/have had nothing but pleasant experiences with them. 13K miles between them and no major issues whatsoever.

i wouldn't feel comfortable using my 355 as a daily driver - it's way too conspicuous of a car, attracts far too much attention parked at the mall, and i wouldn't want to subject it to the weather of the northeast (never mind that it's a spider).

i think 911s are a GREAT daily driver alternative. the normally aspirated 996s are underpowered IMO. the 993s are wonderful cars, though i think they're underpowered as well. if you can stretch for a 993 turbo (yeah, not free) you'll be in seventh heaven.

i don't know the performance characteristics of a testarossa, so maybe the under/over power stuff is not relevant.

good luck with the search.

doody.

Ferrari for a Porsche (Porkchop...)?
Recently tried that route. Bought a new 2002 996 with all the options. After four months of nothing but problems...and boring to drive...and even more problems, Porsche bought the car back. In a nutshell, an $80,000, overpriced...Honda.

Sorry to be so brutal, but the only thing impressive about the car was the price...Oh, yeah, the AC worked well.

Keep the Ferarri..and buy an Audi S-4. Yeehaa!

I would keep the TR & get another car(a new Cooper S perhaps) for a commuter. There's an old saying, "You will never know what you are missing until you lose it."

I hope it doesnt happen to you.

Well I am considering trading in my 91 Testarossa for a Porsche 993. You are probably asking yourself why am I doing this most people go from Porsche to Ferrari, well I need a car that I can drive daily if I need to. The Testarossa is a great car and is wonderful to drive, however I live in northern NJ and work in NYC. I have another car that I use as a daily driver, however if my daily driver is in the shop I need to be able to drive my other car to work for a period of time. The Testarossa is a bit hard to drive on a daily basis. I only use the Testarossa on the weekend and only to certain places. I always have to worry about driveway ramps and so forth. Can anyone with a 993 tell me how the car is. I have looked at several examples and will probably be buying a 96-98 993 C4s or C2s. I have talked to several brokers and dealers and found out that depending on the year and option the 993 has I will either get a few thousand (5k to 6k) back or will have to pay a couple of thousands. It all depends on the 993 mileage, option and condition. Let me know what you guys think about the idea and also about the price difference.

Thank you very much
