Horsefly,
I think you are right about ebay. I have seen cars that looked like they were bid plenty but did not meet reserves. I have also seen some pretty scary cars on there, yet it looks like really good, straight cars are not bid enough.
A really good QV with fresh service, needing nothing and under 30K miles do sell for 35-40K, but there are not many around. A car that has not been maintained and needing big service can quickly cost 10K+ to sort out. There are people asking too much for mediocre cars, but there are real buyers and real sellers at market levels.

The best time to get a low price on a sports car is the middle of winter when demand is low. December is actually the best month as everyone is busy with the holidays and car dealers are starving and it is also good in the private sector sales. But as everyone is prone to being human we all wait till the weather is warm and then we want it right away! Stock market is the same way who wants to buy when everything is going down even though that can be the best time!

Martin: Maybe you are aware of a 308 or two for sale that I am not. If you know of any good example 308 GTSi's out there in the mid $20k's I am a buyer. Thanks.

A car is worth just what a person is willing to buy it for provided he can find an owner who will sell it to him for that price or vice versa. We all know not all cars are the same.. you can buy a 308 for 35 K and it will need nothing more, or buy one for 30 K and spend 10 K getting it ready to drive...I have a 308, won't sell it for 30 K...

My 85 308Qv is a all original 32xxx mile , all books records and services car. Why is it not worth 39k? It is and someone will pay it. They will be making a wise purchase.

Check this months Sports Car Market for prices here and in Europe. We get ripped off in the US!!
Also how can a car, 83 4 valve with completely rebuilt engine be worth more than the normal 84-85QV. Owner asking over 38k for this car with no mileage listed. That price should be a totally original QV with low miles and complete history.

bad example 308 GTxi will be in the low $20s
good example 308GTxi will be in the mid $20s

bad example 308GTx Carb will be in the low to mid $20s
good example 308GTx carb will be in the high "20s to low $30s

bad example 308 GTx QV will be in the mid to high $20s
good example 308GTx QV will be in the low to mid $30s.

The deal of the century was made by Tim in Sarasota last month when he purchased a decent (not perfect) 308 GTS QV for $20,000 !!! red/tan The car had some issues that he pretty much quickly resolved and $1000 later was on the road enjoying his car!

WAY TO GO TIM !

The prices of the years of 308s' that I follow have been in the same range for years- 80-82 low to high 20s' 83-85 high twenties to forty. Most of the prices I have seen at factory dealers have been and continue to be exobernant however.

Ferrari prices are all over the place- depends where you are searching. Basically, dealers are about 10% more expensive- especially Ferrari Authorized dealers (used cars this is). I would be scared to buy a car off auction- but it seems people from here have, and had good experiences, so thats your choice. Best bet would be to find a local owner IMO.

I can't speak for Corvette's because I'm quite simply not into them. However, I do pay attention to the 308 market. Depending upon the 308 you are looking for; glass/carb or 84-85/QV, the good ones are fetching $30K-plus. I've seen some of the mid-upper $20's 308s, specifically QV's and they didn't impress. Those that have been taken care of, have the records, good interiors are definitely worth $30K - $35K.

After browsing e-bay, traderonline, and other vintage car sources, the same problem seems to be prevelant in the Ferrari world as occurs in the Corvette world that I am more familiar with. It seems that nobody REALLY wants to sell their cars. Everybody seems to be looking for big fish with more money than brains. For example, 308 prices that I have observed locally seem to be under $30,000 but everybody online thinks their 308s are worth $35,000 to $50,000. I have also tracked cars being posted on e-bay and traderonline at the exact same time. What a shell game! Is every 308 worth over $30,000 like these dreamers wish they could get? From what I have seen, greed has killed the Corvette hobby. How many 427 Vettes are really being sold for $50,000 or more? None of my Corvette acquaintences have paid those kind of big-buck dealer prices. From what I see on this board, there are quite a few wrench turners who actually get their hands greasy. Are the 308 Ferrari guys paying those kind of $30,000 and up dealer prices?
