sounds like the gauge to me too.Mine moves very slowly either way.

Hi Brian,
Bottom line is I think you're right- it's your guage, or a component that feeds it. Oil temp on mine changes only very slowly. I can't tell you offhand, but my guage will move from the quarter mark to the halfway mark after sitting for half an hour in pretty much stationary traffic. Longer than this does not make the engine run any hotter either.

Cheers

Kevin

When you're driving your 360 hard and it gets hot, how quickly does the oil temp gauge move up or down? Does it move fairly quick (e.g., like the oil pressure gauge moves)? Or does it move very slowly (e.g., like the water temp gauge moves)?

Why do I ask?
I've been having overheating problems when driving my 360 hard. However, I suspect its actually a gauge problem, not an actual heat problem. The needle moves slowly up to about 245'. Then it starts moving far more quickly, almost bouncing around. For example, it'll be at 245' as I start the longest straight... 10 seconds later it'll have flopped up into the red... if I power through the double-S that follows and then around to the next straight, it'll be off the scale (light on, of course)... I ease off it through the next corner and straight... bouncing up in the red... same through the next straight... and so on... until suddenly it drops in <2seconds back down into the 270 range. It bounces around fairly wildly in that range for a bit. Eventually it settles back around 245' until I get back on it a couple of straights, and it all starts over again.

The needle seems to move way faster than the engine could possibly be changing temperature. And it doesn't seem to be moving with how the engine would be heating based on my driving. If the engine is changing temperature that fast, you'd think it would also thus change quickly relative to when you get on it or get off it... but it is very delayed relative to that.

If I stop when its in the red and put my Infrared Thermometer to the engine, its maybe 20' hotter than normal driving most everywhere I measure. The oil cooler lines might measure 230 instead of their typical 210. Doesn't really seem like its >100' hotter than normal; but it may be inside.

Thus, I suspected the oil temp sender... had that replaced... no change in behavior. The next suspect is the oil temp gauge.

Anyway, answers to the above questions would be very helpful.

Thanks,
Brian
