I have bought cars with what I call "deferred maintenance". No matter how cheap you get them, it's never cheap enough and a car without records is a double whammy.

My '91 348TS was a 2 previous owner garage queen with 2600 miles.

The car was bought new @ the then list price of 78,000 ukp (OUCH!) by a Chinese chap in 91, I would imagine as speculation that cars would continue to increase in value as they were doing in 1991. He had it for 10.5 yrs and did 2150 miles. So no services for 10.5 yrs since its first, no MOT's, no road fund licences etc.

The car was then bought by the dealer I have just purchased it from. They went to the chinese mans house with the view to drive it back to the workshop but thought again and decided it was best to not start it after so long, so they got it on a low loader. They then did a full fluids/belts change and gave it a thorough going over. The car was apparently so thick in dust it was difficult to tell what its colour was!

The car was then bought by another guy who had a full service, fitted a top alarm/immobiliser, Tracker and music system (it never had one from new!) and had the rocker panels colour matched. After just 6 months he had to relocate to Majorca so the same dealer bought it back, now with 2600 miles on it!

Having looked at several other cars, both TB's and TS's I know I paid well over the odds for the car in money terms but not in real terms as they are generally a bit worse for wear at this age in UK.

I hope I can now be both extremely fastidious in looking after it, but more importantly WILL use the damn thing.

Some of the problems my 308 had were due to the car sitting since 93. My rear calipers wouldnt return to replace the pads, all the belts were shot, seals dry as a popcorn fart, wiper switch needed use and fiddling with to get the motor working again, lights not working due to dirty connections, musty smell in the interior and tires dry cracked but plenty of tread. Things seem to be coming slowly to life now that I drive it every other day at the very least, rain or shine. If I had an 860 monza, it would get used weekly , just not in the rain.

To each their own, I suppose. The only limiting factor for me is that my garage is on an alley, so pulling in and out is a bit of a pain in the a**. Otherwise I'd probably double my mileage. Seems like most owners are avid drivers, though.

750 miles?! I did that the first 2 weeks I had mine. I wonder what kind of insurance rates you get if your car qualifies as furniture?

With a 20 year plus Boxer, it is quite posible to have had no record other than oil changes. BUT you will have to go over the engine and whole car, due to the lack of use. You will need a belt/bearing change, valves replaced with stainless and cam seals replaced. Once you go so far the clutch should be looked at as well. All gaskets replaced, water pump rebuilt. You will probably need the brakes rebuilt with a new Mastercylinder and seals in the callipers. On top of that the heater hoses will have rotted out inside, the aircon will most probably be dead. Roughly $15K ? No, more like 25K . But you will end up with an immaculate low mileage Boxer in perfect order. Don't forget that even if you buy a Boxer with an extensive service history, the above items could still need attention anyway.

speaking of garage queens, i saw a 1994 512TR at a dealer with 750 miles on it. yikes. if you give 'em the benefit of the doubt and assume it was an 06/95 build that's less than 10 miles per month.

doody.

Why not just hold off and buy a car you can trust? If you expect to get $15K off the price of a comparable Boxer with service, and you plan to put that $15k back into the car, just buy the better car the first time around.

If that car doesn't have DOT/EPA papers, the only place for it is in MY garage with the other untitled Queens.
I don't think that any Ferrari cannot have some sort of service records if it is legit.
I have a 308 with 20,000 miles on it and have at
least 10 documents of service performed, not counting the 15,000 mile service.
I would be wary of this car.

Does it have DOT/EPA papers? If not, it may stay a garage queen... The thing that's scary about no service history is not the lack of service, but the history of the car, and its ownership. What's the title like, how many owners, when was it brought in, by whom, who did the conversion, was it ever wrecked, who did the work on the car, if it was worked on, etc. If you can find out where the car was, you might be able to get information from the dealer or other garage that serviced it. Also, run the vin or equivalent by Rousch at market letter; i had an indepedent, who will go unnamed, offer me a red carb'ed boxer/ original paint; Rousch had the car listed 10 years earlier as a different color. Nobody is too honest.

Looking at a boxer that has about 20k miles on her. In great shape, right colors, year etc. Guy reping the car has no service history - well actually says only services has been oil changes. Is this possible - wouldn't you need to change the plugs etc etc? Maybe they were done but he does not have history. Maybe he is being too honest. I probably can get 15k off the price of a comparable boxer with service. 15k is roughly what I figure you would need to go over the engine. What do you guys think.
