Tim, I think you're right. We ARE kids!! As far as overdrive, doesn't really come into play in this situation. BTW, Robert, that 308 is about as pretty as they come!

My friend does that in his camaro, only on purpose. 1st gear going 20moph with straight pipes in an enclosed space is loud. At the mall we how many he can set off. Were only kids so we are allowed to do this.

funny thing, I'm torn between parking in the enclosed parking garage and the open lot when I drive my 308QV to the office. The parking garage has definite advantages in terms of shade and security but I literally set off the car alarm on every other car parked in the garage each time I drive past them! Even just idling through at 1500-2500RPM in second? A spirited run up the ramps at higher RPM definitely sets all of them off, anyone else experience this before? I've decided to search out shady areas in the lot instead of ticking off the security guys and all my fellow colleagues each time I enter/exit the garage...

Definitely have someone drive it and get on it while you are not in it. I sounds great as they are pulling away. It is amazing how far away the car can be and you can still hear it. When I am driving down the street in my neighborhood often times I will see cats in peoples yard squat down and start looking around when I go past. To answer the original question, I usually shift around 4 to 5k but take it to the redline a few times when I am out for a drive. Always to the redline when getting on the highway or going under a bridge.

Jack -

You ain't kidding, I've been at a car show and heard my car start (good friend - firing it up for tourists), from what would be about a block away. Knew it was my car without a hint of doubt.

Have someone you know/trust drive by you on a country road at various speeds to hear what your car sounds like coming and going (in different gears too). No need for curves, just have them do a few runs. Makes for an interesting effect, a new twist on your car, the sounds a pedestrian would hear!

That's funny about the dog, because mine hears me too (you can kind of see her on my bio). Whenever I'm winding up the engine, I tend not to look down at the tach to see exactly what it's reading. Especially since the power surges in the upper band. All I know is it still feels pretty strong. Can't say about a limiter. Don't know if I want to find out.

Jack, my dog can detect my car from 1/2 mile away when I come home. My kids also claim they can hear the Ferrari "music" from inside the house. Like you, I wouldn't know when I am driving. I rarely rev it up to a redline in my 85 308QV. So, I am not sure of the speed limit at redline in each gear. I suppose I could find out if it is not too damaging to the engine.

Does the 308 stop making power at 7700 or have any kind of a limiter or can you go a bit above 7700 and still make power?

I usually stay in 4th on the highway, too. The car feels and sounds strong revving in the 4-5K range. Plus it's good for the inevitable highway speed changes.

What struck me this weekend was when someone mentioned that they heard me coming down the street from inside their house. I wasn't going at all fast, but I get this all the time from people. It dawned on me that I've never heard my own car from the outside since I'm always in it. Now I want to let someone else drive it so I can listen to it. Strange?

I found most 308 are at 4,000 for 80MPH in 5th. Getting on the interstated I shift at 7 or 8.

In the TR -- 4th gear at 70 is the best on the highway. 5th lets the engine run way too cool for my tastes (below 175). 2nd on twisty country roads lets you hop up and down from 40 to 80 in one breath. In slightly more open road but still with curves, 3rd is awesome -- 101 MPH is redline and it can get there real quick.

Highway driving I use 4th at 4000 rpms which is just over 70 mph.

What's a typical running gear for you, then, supposing you're on the highway at around 70mph?

It also depends on the car, the engine, gearbox, etc. In the Maranello, you can break the speed limit in 1st, but just barely; 2d doesn't really have alot more headroom; 3d gear is the sweet one; spend alot of time between 3 &4, sometimes down to 2, but keep in mind that red line in 4 is an indicated 140mph+ so i rarely drive in 5 or 6, even when i am travelling. In terms of rpms, i will push first hard, but get out quick, go to 2d momentarily,-redlining there doesn't make a huge difference, and get that sucker into 3d. Now, i have alot more torque than most of the normally aspirated 8 cyl. F cars, and don't have to rev it hard, but, that's when the car really sings, particularly at higher speeds; eg, put your foot down in 4 or 5 when moving swiftly along the highway, and the normally quiet 12 gets pretty snarly, even without those aftermarket exhasts.

It depends on a lot of things for me. I usually get out of 1st in my 328 pretty quickly. It's kind of a "flat" gear, and 2nd is more fun. If I'm just doing city driving, stop light to stop light, I tend to get lazy with the upshifts. When cruising, I usually run it at 4000-4500. It also depends on what neighborhood I'm in. I don't like to be "that guy who's always driving around with the engine screaming".

I am curious as to know what RPM you rev up to in each gear in your normal driving. 4000? 5000? 6000? What RPM you find it most suitable for F-cars?
