Being a salesman myself, this is my perspective: They get paid on commission, not just to show up. If it was true ANOTHER salesman sold the car, then I wouldn't have a beef. He would have asked if the car was sold; the salesmanager would have said 'no, there is no deposit on it but salesman X has an interested customer'. So the other salesman told his customer he'd better jump if he wants the car, and he did. No salesman will turn down a sale because someone else 'has an interested customer' If it was the same salesman though, he should have called and given the situation. Even if he makes more from the other customer, he needs to service his older customer first. I've been in a situation when I 'hold' an order for one of my guys and don't sell it out from under him even though I have that opportunity. |

I think the dealer did the right thing. Money talks. You could have backed out of the deal in the last minute too. Even better for him that he got more money. From my experience selling cars (my own private ones) potential buyers think they can treat you like because they have the money. I have heard too often on the phone or via email that he/she is buying the car 100 % and then backs out without any reason. Car business is just too emotional for many people, so I am cutting back to what it really is - money for goods. |

Ross - here's a link to authorized dealers in Italy. I used Forza in Torino to buy a few things and they seemed very nice, although I didn't purchase a car from them. Good luck. http://212.141.72.200/web/asm/20speciale_ferrari/sp_ferrari_indirizzi.html |

I had put a deposit on a 308, later that day the salesman called and told me his boss had backed out of the deal. Needless to say I was a little bit pissed, all worked out fine as I found and purchased a better one from another dealer. At this point the first guy backing out was very good for me. |

Ross, since the dealer knew you were serious even though no deposit, I would have hoped the dealer would have tried to call you and let you know someone else is looking and give you right of first refusal. Also, not all salespeople talk to each other about the various deals they are working on. Perhaps it fell through the cracks. If you and the dealer are true friends, don't let this come between you. You're young and have many more Ferraris in your future. |

ross, dso what I do when this comes up, very easy with a dealer BTW, give them your credit card info over the phone and tell him to put a $1,000 deposit on it, you will be by with another deposit or full payment at that or that day. Have him send you by fax the bill of sale once the deposit is through. Then it is a sure deal ! |

you are right that until the money comes in, he can sell it. but this is the same guy from whom i bought my 512tr 2 years ago, and who i visit frequently so he knew i was coming....don't forget i scheduled the meeting to pay him before he sold it....... |

I think it is fair that until you put the deposit down he has a right to sell it. You are not committed legally and neither is he. That said we would like to beleive in gentlemens agreements but I bet dealers have alot of people who say they are coming in to buy a car and never show up. |

have to vent a little: i have been negotiating with a dealer for a 456gta and had finally gotten all the issues sorted out. i scheduled my last visit to give them the downpayment for last friday. and then when i got there he tells me that while he was out the day before, the other salesman had sold the car !!! he apologised profusely etc but i was livid and let them know it. i managed to keep myself in check in order to use this against them if/when they come up with another one, but while i was cooling off in his office i managed to see the sales ticket, and the other guy had paid about $6k more than what i had gotten them to....so i guess money talks. live and learn; next time i'll put in the deposit the day i get the right number. in the meantime, does anybody know of a decent dealer in italy that i could call on? |
