Forget Exotics4Less. Did the research, and a few people came back with good reports. . . it was a nightmare. The salesman gave me a line of bull about a really great 1990 ts in black, 28k miles, but 30k done. Price was on target. I told him that I didn't want to waste anyone's time and the car would have to be perfect, blah, blah. He assured me it was, so I sent a deposit pending inspection by Ferrari dealer in the area. They got the car and called me before they brought the
car in. . .the service manager told me he wouldn't buy the car just from looking at
it. . . so I didn't, and kissed Exotics for Less goodbye.

Spent the next month or so searching dealer inventory, to no avail. Found my 1991 348 ts at
Rayco Eurospec in Kingston, PA. Took a 300 mile
round trip to check out the operation and I can
tell you that this is a class operation. I bought the car and took her home this past weekend.

Check these guys out. Mike, Phil and Joe are straight-shooters who are looking to establish
a relationship with their customers. Mention my
name, I am sure you will get a lollipop or something!

Lesson? Ferrari dealership is not required as long as you research the organization you are doing business with and feel comfortable with your
research.

By the way - one suggestion - get one, now. This is the most incredible piece of machinery on the road.

What a great idea! Because there are few people who sell and work on this limited production car it might help us f-car owners sort out those that desire our support and those that should clean bathrooms.

You know, it strikes me that alot of people (new or old to this board) have recurring questions about dealers, shops and sources. Assuming Rob's E&O insurance is paid up, why not have a section of the board permanently devoted to comments on dealers, independents, and suppliers, by region or specialty, and rate them based on our experiences, with pithy comments. Sort of like a Zagats for Ferrari dealers and suppliers. Anybody support this? Rob, what say you?

Anyone that is truly a wholesaler does not have to advertise, internet or otherwise. This goes for any used item market, not just cars.
There are good independents and others that are really, really bad. If you find a car of interest, let us know the particulars and we can probably give good advice plus help you find someone to do a PPI which is always a good idea no matter where the car is being sold.

Doody, I think FoNE can coax you out of the 996TT into a 575 !

i'll second whart's comments. if you can deal locally with a solid dealership that wants to sell you cars again in the future, you may end up ahead of the curve (you may not, but you very well may). you will pay for that privilege though.

i would have preferred to have bought my car through the local dealer. i identified the car, had them negotiate, but they couldn't strike a deal. a month or so later after they'd exhausted their options i went direct and bought it.

i was very comfortable that my local dealer, Ferrari of New England, would have taken care of me, and i hope to buy my next f-car from them. we'll see if they can coax me out of the 996TT and into a 550 :-).

fwiw, the independents near me (Independent Ferrari Service and Boston Sportscars) can handle everything, except maybe 360s due to the computer issues.

You will get better service from the dealer you buy the car from, unless it is an older car and you know a good mechanic; the newer cars are more electronic and virtually force you to deal with ferrari for service, if not parts. the authorized dealers tend to charge more, on average than the independents, and certainly more than some internet dealer without overhead, but the dealer puts his franchise on the line, even if it is sold without an express written warranty.
Not all dealer shops are the same, so paying the price will not guarantee flawless work; however, i would tend to trust an authorized dealer more on car history than an independent, unless i truly know the person i am buying from, or can independently verify the car's history.

IMO, the car itself is much more important than the place you purchase it from. Who cares whether it's purchased from an FNA dealer, an exotic car place or an individual... as long as the car meets or exceeds your buying criteria. And I'm sure price will be part of your criteria.

It was mentioned below... be patient!!! BTW, good luck and have fun!!!

Welcome, Johnathan.

Are you thinking of a new or pre-owned? If pre-owned, will it still have some warranty left?

If you're getting a pre-owned one, get your checked out. Buying from an established dealer (authorized or not) usually means they will be there in the future should some customer service issues arise.

Don't let emotions dictate your decision. If you question something the salesman says about a specific model, ask FerrariChat. We're here to help.

BPC = Buyer Purchase Criteria

in a previous life i was with a management consulting firm. it twisted my brain in all sorts of odd ways ;-). i got better though.

i think you can blame this guy for BPC: http://dor.hbs.edu/fi_redirect.jhtml?facInfo=bio&facEmId=mporter

BPC is not an entirely common one - apologies.

though PPI is quite common on this board, so :-p :-) :-)

my suggestions:

FC away and don't get caught AFK when the SAF comes your way. You're then OTB and pretty soon PMG's in the PH. Don't get caught in the rain or being SAHFO or the FPS will be KDYD.

Just kiddin, what does BPC and PPI mean Doody?

My translation is...

[FerrariChat.com] away and don't get caught [Away From Keyboard] when the [Sweet Ass Ferrari] comes your way. You're then [On The Ball] and pretty soon {Pulling Mad G's] in the {Prancing Horse]. Don't get caught in the rain or being [Stereotypical A Hole Ferrari Owner] or the [Ferrari Protective Services] will be [Knocking Down Your Door].

ask away johnathan and i'm sure folks will be happy to help. i don't know jack about West Virginia, so i can't be too helpful there.

the members here can generally clue you in on the good and less-good independents; as well as the good and less-good dealers.

if you're willing to do ALL the legwork, you can search nationally yourself and find the car you want. if you don't want to do all the legwork, find a local dealer/broker/mechanic-finder/whatever and let them do the heavy lifting.

two suggestions:

(1) be patient. these cars aren't a dime a dozen (or a ten-spot a dozen for that matter!). in six months of searching i only found 2 or 3 cars that really seemed to fit my BPC.

(2) get it checked out. a PPI can be worth its weight in gold. this board can almost certainly refer you to qualified, known professionals near whatever car you find.

good luck!

doody.

find someone you are comfortable with and go with them - there are good and bad dealers and good and bad independants - once you find a car check if anyone else has purchased from them. I think most memebers have shyed away from exoticsforless

Greetings fellow Tifosi. This fall I plan to purchase my first Cavallini. What are the advantages and disadvantages to purchasing from an authorized dealer as compared to an unauthorized dealer or an entity like Exotics4Less.com, an internet wholesaler?
Specifically, I'm conerned with service and future purchases. Many thanks.
