Don't down-play the Japanese too much...I drive one. You can't deny the extreme reliabiltity that these cars provide, but yes, you also can't deny the robotic feeling that the cars have. Can you believe that a new Miata costs more than my GT4? I grew tired of the pop culture, SUV tests that regularly graced the covers of both R&T and C&D that I don't even glance at them at the newsstand. I buy exclusively European mags that have the articles that I want. |

It is cheaper to pick up Rosso Ferrari at Barnes and Noble than it is to get a subscription if there is one near you. I think after I move I will get a subscription to Rosso and Forza (so then I don't have to go through the address changing). They are really good magazines. I just picked up the new Forza at B&N tonight, it's feature is the 456M, then there's an article about the 412, and then the 250GT SWB. |

I don't know how many of you have ever driven a Miata but it is a flashback to the sixties. They are so much fun to drive if only they were not so damn ugly. If they would put that drive train in an MGA I would be their first customer. They have the best feeling manual transmission I have ever felt. |

I have probably read that article five times by now, I mean, I have two studies at school and I don't get any homework, I have to do something besides hitting on girls and cutting (I have subscriptions to half a dozen magazines). Chris, you and I must think alike. This afternoon I pulled on the highway behind a new Miata and thought to myself, hmm, I really can't see how that can provide the same thrills as a 360 Spider. And then I started thinking about how I don't like any Japanese cars, they don't have any soul, I'm an American, stick with the US cars and maybe some refined European ones (hey I'm Italian and German, first generation American on my mom's side). Car and Driver did a good job with the article, but I would have liked to see more pictures of the convertible tops, the lines of the cars, etc. The photos were alright, but all of them kept me thinking how much I would really like to see that part of the car that isn't being shown in the photo. What I didn like about the article was how the Ferrari won for starters, how they gave you an insight about the cars (Aston's luxury in British style, Z8 is a gay version of the devastating Cobra for those people that can't take the hair raising American power and aren't into cars enough to know that they are getting ripped, that the Ferrari doesn't have aligned roll hoops in that traditional Ferrari every-car-is-unique way). I too stopped reading C&D for awhile, but then they had a really funny article about a Rolls-Royce Corniche, so I was convinced to get a subscription. You can read C&D over and over again, whereas R&T gets boring. Forza and Rosso Ferrari can be read numerous times as well. |

Thanks for mentioning this article. I am glad Ferrari came in first! However, the comment that guy from C/D made is the reason I stopped reading Car and Driver. Quote:"All three exotics (BMW z8 ,Aston Martin, and Ferrari Spider ) also display an exceptional level of packaging inefficiency. The V-12 Aston Martin weighs well over 4000 pounds. In fact, a 2400-pound Mazda Miata offers pretty much the same alfresco motoring on winding roads and provides the same level of grin factor..." I can't agree about a Mazda Miata providing any type of grin factor, much less comparing it to a Spider. |

I'm not normally a big magazine reader, but the front of the April 2001 Car and Driver caught my eye today: Cover story comparing the high end convertables. Pictured on the cover, the competitors: BMW Z3 Aston Martin DB7 (convertable) and 360 Spyder F1 Let's just say I didn't read the reviews of the German or Brit, becuase I didn't need to. The winner was obvious. If anyone read all the reviews and had any thoughts to share or had sampled any of these fine autos, I'd love to hear about it. -Ben (one of the least fans of convertables) |
