Being laid off isn't fun but it toughens one up a lot. I broke up with my Accountancy partnership when things were at their worst (1993). Went without a job for 7 very long months. But the trick is never to give up and don't feel sorry for yourself. Find something to do...get out of the house even if you dont earn anything.

Now I can look back and say that was probably the best thing that ever happened in my career 'cause I broke away from the rut I was in.

THINK POSITIVE + HAVE CONFIDENCE IN YOURSELF

Good luck.

Marcus, I was layed off 3 weeks ago, and although I am still looking for a job, I'm sure it will work out for the best, for both of us. Hang in there my friend, you will be fine.

Marcus, frankly that sucks.... sorry to hear about the job loss. In my experiences, things have always seemed to happen for a reason... and I've usually come out better because of it. Hope this is the case with you!

Marcus - You will be fine. Just remember that there is always someone who has a worse situation than yourself. Also, look at everything you have going for you.
If you do relocate to the northeast, then post it on F.C. Take care and best of luck!!

i haven't got anything new to add to all of the good advice, but think its good to hear the same thing from as many people as possible to show you how true it is. i have been in this situation a few times before, but like all the guys said, a positive attitude will help get you something else quickly. and for people with ambition, intelligence and tenacity, these are opportunities for even better things. it will be stressful but it will work out for the best. just keep an open mind so that you don't miss something from left field.

Marcus, can't agree more with the wise advice already provided on this post. I too have been laid off twice over the years and each subsequent opportunity that arose turned out to be SO MUCH BETTER than what I had just come from. Sometimes you dont even realize just how bad things were just before getting the news until you've moved on to the next opportunity. Keep your chin up, its not your fault, everything will work out better than you can imagine and sooner than you think. Most importantly enjoy every moment of time off that you take. Good luck to you, wishing you the best of luck.

Marcus, a positive attitude is the most important trait to have when in this situation...I've been there twice and within 4 months of one-another (lay-off and then company bankruptcy).

Any negative or depression-like attitude glows like a neon sign. You will come out this a better person, I promise.

Marcus - remember - Don't take it personaly. You are just a number (actually not that comforting, either).

I agree with Jim E. Only I would add one thing --- take a couple of weeks off first, if you can afford it. Use this time to lick your wounds, get over being pissed off, and get your "network" organized. Getting a good job is always harder than actually doing that job. You need to have your energy harnessed and your focus sharp when you do go looking. Trying half-assed can burn good opportunities.

Oh by the way --- I've been laid off 3 times, and each successive job was better than the previous. The good news is that being laid off is so common place these days, that most perspective employers won't hold it against you in the least.

Sorry to hear that. Never ahd to go through this myself but I imagine it must be devastating. The least thing you should know is it is not you or your fault. Because some a*s up higher, who will probably not lose his just but be promoted, your company is doing bad and the easiest way to cut expense is cutting staff.

It is nice to be indisposable. I call my boss a dumb a*shole every morning and he does not fire me. I come and go when I please and do not get fired. Every few days I look him straight in his eyes and...shave him, that idiot :-)

Keep your spirit high. Great test for your future wife and you. Always look at the positive.

I found out that I am part of a lay off and my last day is Friday (First lay off I have experienced)...not good when you are trying to plan a wedding. After Friday I will not be able to post due to not having a computer at home yet. I will drop a line every once in a while when I can. All I can do is keep my head up and be determined in finding a new job!

Take care,
Marcus Mayeux
