Ben
Unfortunatly not.
I did find a company that makes faux panels that have fiber optic stars in them, I might add those eventually. I will do accoustical panels before hand.

Chris
I will definetly stay in touch.
First thing I will need is the 42" for the fireplace then a 32" for the master bedroom.

thanks

*Love* the new SLs. LOVE 'em :D)

I confess a soft spot for Martin Logan's electrostatics. Great dispersion with the curved pannel, and not as 'laid back' as some. And they have The Magic(TM).

Are you going to do anything special with the celing? (I've been on a Fibre optic kick lately, we've got it down to a science. In the dark, you'd swear you're looking through a glass celing at the night sky.)

Best!
Ben.

I am getting a custom home built and I had them build me a custom home theatre in the basement with tier seating. I will be running the new marantz dlp with a stewart firehawk screen. mcintosh amps/processor with martin logan speakers all around.

top 6 pics are the home theatre

more pictures of the house
http://www.silverstorminc.com/home/pics12/

I will be hanging a plasma over the fireplace
also putting a plasma in my office and in the master bedroom.
I am going to settlement in 4 weeks.
Chris if you could extend your offer till august for me, i would probably take a couple plasma's off your hands. I just cant afford to buy one just yet, bringing tooo much money to the table in 4 weeks.

Enjoy the pictures
Perhaps by next summer I will have a shiny stallion to show you all!
right now i have a benz SL55 on order, wife couldnt resist, she finds the SL so cute so i opted for the AMG model:-)

Just thought I'd jump in here, I do custom theatre design consulting for a living, and I have to agree, for the true movie expierence, CRT front projection is still where it's at! In my home I have a fairly modest 100" screen based on an Ampro 4300 9" tube projector. The room has to be *dark* but you'll swear you were watching film. (controled lighting zones still allow some light so you don't trip, etc. Just like an actual theater.)

Newer front projection technologies (LCD, and recently DLP/'light-valve') have brought brightness levels up to the "lighted room" level, but direct sunlight is still out. (motorised window shades are a big seller :D)

The plasma TV, on the other hand, (flat, hangs on the wall like a picture, killer design possabilities) all have some colour accuracy flaws, but they are getting better. (if you don't see 'em, don't sweat it, it won't bother you.) If you're a picture-snob though, you may be dissapointed with your $10k wonder. Audition first!

This Panasonic is one of the best of these types of sets on the market wrt colour, and this price is a steal. (they can be used as computer monitors as well, very trick.)

I also like Pioneer's Plasma TV (best colour yet I think) current lineup.

I'd encourage anyone thinking about picking up a Flat TV, to give Chris a call and do it! (this is a $6k+set for 4, gotta love it.)

Best!
Ben

Chris,

good one.........Actually the Panasonic plasma TV is one of the best ones on the market today. My dad just bought one and he paid over $5,000.00 for it, but it looks killer.
I just installed a front projection system in my home with a NEC 150Z DLP proj., but it has to be pretty dark even with 1000 ansi-lumens of light

G. Peters,

It is very easy to set your computer up to the screen.

It can be hung over a fireplace, many people choose this option. The only concern is out of control fires.

Give me a call and I can discuss it with you.

Plasma screens are great for viewing in a small room like your bedroom or kitchen but nothing beats a CRT projection in a dedicated home theater room creating the same feeling as being in a big theatre. I have a dedicated home theatre room with projection and it's primarily for movies only - the sofa has 4 large transducers to create the trembling sensations of explosions or such. Baaadd to the bone... Got both plasma and projection- once you have it you never go back to the old tube or rear projection type sets... period...

Chris:

1) I'm interested in the 42" for my den. Does it come with a tuner, or do I just plug my cable box directly into the TV? What about my DVD/VCR (digital, progressive scan)? I will call you at the 800 #.

2) I see from your profile you are in Southhampton. I have a house in Westhampton (see get-together post under NY-Tri-State Region heading). I am in Southhampton most weekends. We should meet.

Chris,
How difficult is it to set up the plasma display for internet and e-mail via a wireless network.
Can it be hung on a wall over a fireplace mantel, my concern would be heat during the few times a year we light the fireplace.

Dr.,

The plasmas handle light very well, the panasonic series have the highest brightness levels out there.

They are very reliable. The extended warranty is just a piece of mind. There is a small chance you will have a problem, most problems aren't worth fixing, and in that case you would be out the cost of the screen. So for a few hundred dollars you have the security.

All sat. rec. will plug directly into the plasma.

Give me a call with any questions 1-800-923-8007

Coachi:

Yes, they can deal well with ambient light.

Most PDPs do NOT come with any sort of tuner - they are simply a display device. A lot like your computer monitor is just a display device.

Stu:

****what is the Plasma Screen all about? How is it that much better? Why would I want one? Is this the "flat" screen I see/hear so much about?*****

Yes, these are generally the "flat screens" you've heard about.

You might want one for a few reasons:

(1) They are obviously far more decor-friendly that large rear-projection televisions. Their WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) is huge (other than the price tag, that is!).

(2) IMO, they provide better images than an RPTV does.

(3) They can deal with ambient light. If you want a big image, your general first direction is a projector - but all projectors basically require serious control of the ambient light. Many people can't really control the ambient light in their room.

(4) The newer units accept digital inputs (DVI) so you can theoretically have an all-digital video path, which is just stunning IMO.

I purchased for reasons 3 and 4. I wanted a projector, but my den is open to the floor above and it's two floors of all windows facing due South. There was no way it was going to work out, so I started looking at PDPs (Plasma Display Panel).

I drive my PDP with a PC via DVI. You slap a DVD into the PC's drive, software rips the bits off, other software processes it to the right resolution and cleans it up, and then it's shipped digitally, pixel-by-pixel, straight to the PDP. I did a side-by-side comparison with a high-end Meridian 596 DVD player running analog and it was no comparison.

You can see some info on my system at AVS Forum here: http://www.avsforum.com/PhotoPost/index.pl?photo=640 and here: http://www.avsforum.com/PhotoPost/index.pl?photo=641 .

PDPs are pricey. A 50" unit will run you $9K to $15K depending on which you get and from whom. The 61" units are running $20K or more. The 42" inch units are going through a bit of a price war right now, so they're coming down nicely.

Hope this is helpful.

Doody.

can you view this plasma TV in a lit room.. my den is awash with sunlight. Also, if i were to connect to a satellite receiver, a 4 DTV, do i need an extra tuner to tune the HDTV stations? Also, the extended warrantees... are the units so unreliable that you need an extended warranty for that much?

Martin,

The bulbs last approx. 2yrs, the cost ranges from $ 100 - $ 1000.

If you notice most front projections systems are installed in a non-window room or basement. As far as light, it depends on how bright the room is. As I said before the best viewing is when in a dark room similar to a movie theater.

My house will have 4 TVs in total. The projection would be to lounge at the sofa cuddle with the wife and watch a movie, maybe the Simpsons (always wanted to see Homer lifesize). The others are in the bedroom, kitchen and we will have a regular TV room with a big screen. Maybe I willg et one into the garage as well with Speed on all the time.

My concern was that the light is so invasive that you can not see at all. Also I was told that the bulbs blow easy and are super expensive. Is that true?

Martin,

You are talking about a front projection setup. They are really good in a dark room. With light you will loose the intensity of the picture, some of the brighter projectors handle light better, over 1000 lumes, If you do plan on alot of daylight watching a projector is not the best choice.

Well, we hade the connection in the ceiling at about 12 foot off the wall. Cable and power is up there. I guess you can get a nice 100'' picture going there. Just not sure if the quality and the light distraction is great with them. Never saw one with daylight working.

at the risk of contining an OT thread.....

i have a 50" plasma, and they are great technology. the current crop of 42" panasonic units are stellar beasts.

before you write off 42" as being "small", remember that these things are 16:9 not 4:3. i went from a 53" RPTV to the 50" Plasma. when i watch letterboxed (16:9 or something non-4:3) material my image is as big or larger (do the trig). admittedly for 4:3 material it's smaller, but i mostly watch movies.

they are not cheap, but they are definitely getting less expensive.

doody.
