You're right, human hands put these cars together, they can certainly take them apart. That jig that I mentioned is made from steel tube. I don't think you can purchase it, this is on the assembly line in Maranello! I'd imagine the dealers would have some sort of device. I agree with pulling the motor out, I'm going to be doing that with my GT4 in the next week or so. To do this, I welded up my own hoist because of the little room I have in my townhouse garage. The Destra-bank of cylinders are easy to get to, but Sinistra are a pain! Cam belts can be removed and installed in situ, but I feel to do a proper valve adjustment, the engine has to be out. Its been done before by others with the engine still in the car, but I live by the saying: "Work smarter, not harder!" |

Peter This special "Jig" is made of metal? wood? homemade? or bought? And I agree that some manuals are helpless but at least they have specs for torque and stuff. That is important too. I actually prefer to take the engine out for major tune up so it can be done right. There is so little room in those cars anyway. Plus, if this is a requirement upfront in the design phase, these cars tend be de designed such that removing the engine is a relatively simple task. |

Yelcab2, You need a special jig to grab the engine and drop it from the TR. I have a book on the TR and a worker used this jig to raise the motor into the car on the assembly line. The reason for this was that the engine is mounted in a sub-frame and is part of the chassis, big and bulky. It was just one person though in the photograph, so it is feasible. In response to Workshop Manuals, I found that they're not 100% helpful. There good for listing all bolt-torque values and dimensions and clearances, but for procedures they're lacking. But then again, I'd be screwed if I didn't have anything, so any bit of info counts. |

I think (like the Porsche 911), the engine on the TR is "dropped" and not "pulled." Dropping requires a big jack and a couple of friends and can be done inside a garage. Pulling requires a big hoist and a couple of friends and most likely needs infinite headroom for the hoist. Is this correct? |

1. how feasible is it to keep up a TR at home by myself? Rob> I've heard TR's require an engine pull for about everything. I don't know if that's a big deal or not. 2. how much does it cost to tune it up if I do all the labor? Rob> Looking at the major service (w/belts) on my 328, parts probably only came to $200-300. 3. is there access to decent service manuals (a must to work on any car)? Rob> Several sources to buy orginal or copies of manuals. One place is... http://www.ferrariliterature.com/ |

I will be considering a TR for driving pleasure. I am a very decent home mechanic. I have kept my Porsche 911 and BMW M3 in tip top condition and have even rebuilt both engines without losing a washer. Rebuilding a 911 flat 6 is not for the faint of heart but it was very satisfying when you are done. My questions are: 1. how feasible is it to keep up a TR at home by myself? 2. how much does it cost to tune it up if I do all the labor? 3. is there access to decent service manuals (a must to work on any car)? Thanks for your opinion |

Make sure you have an expert look at it. Maybe take it to Ferrari of Long Island or any reputable facilty that deals with exotics. They might be able to give you some history on that particular car. It will be the best $100-$200 you'll ever spend. |

I'm looking at a 91 TR tommorrow in NY. It's got 10k miles and asking is $74k. It's a pretty good price but like everyone, I'm scared of the repair bills. I've been a Porsche owner for the past 6 years. Any advice will be appreciated... |
