I agree with Bret, Convertibles just don't seem Ferrari. They look like they are in competition with Chevy and Ford convertibles. The reason I like the Targa is you have it all. Top on it carries the flowing style of the coupe. Top off you get the open air feeling. Last of all you don't have to worry about replacing a costly convertible top and you don't have to fool with a top frame and motors that can get out of adjustment or go bad. Only my preference. MAGOO

I guess there are certain truths based on that, mostly based around young hot girls and clubs during the summer. Honestly though, I got my F-car because I'm all about Ferrari, not because I really care what others think about it. A lot of people don't know much about Ferraris anyway. It definitely does get girls though, there is no doubt about it.

Continuing this topic of convertibles, has anyone ever seen (or has) a photo of the 328 Spyder? It was a one-off exclusively for Sergio Scaglietti (but he intended a small run of 25 cars). It was mentioned in Forza #14 & 15, but no pictures.

I wish they would bring back the Targa in the form of a 360GTS. I don't see why they got rid of it. I could see that there are profit margins, etc of just a berlinetta and a spider, but come on. They only started using the Targa because they were having trouble passing true convertibles for US crash standards at about the same time that they were having problems with emission standards (late 70s early 80s). But just because they can now pass convertibles isn't a good reason to kill what has become a Ferrari icon. No other car is so associated with the targa top. It's a shame that they put it under because it is more profitable to not offer it and to only have the coupe and convertible. I'll admit that the 360 convertible is a work of genius, but it still has that overly long rear deck that takes away from the intended lines of the car. It is definitely the best job done with a convertible though by any manufacturer, it is even better than the 550 Barchetta. Bring back the Targa, save it, please, for the good of mankind.

I have to agree with Bret. I am not much of a
rag top person so for me the targa is perfect.
Enough so I get the open air but not so much I
feel its a hassle. Plus I like the lines.

Targa for me, same reasons as pointed out by Bret.
BUT the 360 spyder is something else isn't it ??!!

360 spyder better than the coupe, 355 berlinetta over the spider.

Cabriolet for me, I love the open air and it would drive me to visit beloved So Cal more often!

Steve, I was referring to the original Testa Rossa, the 250, which is among my all-time favorite Ferrari designs. Another open Ferrari I'd take with a little arm-twisting would be a 250 Series 1 - a beautiful car, indeed, being very similar in style to Cal. Spyder. Still, in most cases I'm a coupe fan.

BTW - agree fully with your take on cut Testarossas - not my cup of tea, either.

To be honest, I pretty much hate convertible anything. I just am not one with the whole loud, sunburn ridden ride. They are cool at like 30mph, but at any speed they become a pain. This is only my opinion though, and what am I. This is why I like the Targa, I get that open air and the sound of it with a little more protection (from the elements, I don't fear things like roll overs, I laugh in the face of roll overs, knock on wood, it would be pretty hard to roll a Ferrari though), and what I feel are better looks.

As you well know Rob, my car is a coupe and that's what I voted for and that's what I prefer. I do like spyders and even sunroof cars but the practical side of it where I live (the rainy Northwest), precludes it. It's bad enough that these Italian cars rust just like that, I don't need any more problems with leaky roofs. If I lived in the Southwest however...

Oh, BTW, who voted for the type of Ferrari they actually had? What came first, the opinion or the Ferrari?
Rob Lay (Rob328gts)
Posted on Thursday, March 22, 2001 - 9:26 pm:

I thought this was a fun pole, but I couldn't vote because I kept saying to myself "Between work and everything... I don't drive the Ferrari as much as I want, so any drive in any Ferrari is great to me".

I would drive the coupe for any track and racing events.

I would drive the topless on the best touring days.

I like the targa because it really feels like a couple with the top on and a convertible with it off. Today for the 80 degree temp in Dallas I had the top off and there's no side window frame, it really feels like a convertible. If they had a 328 convertible, all they could do extra is lower the back a little, but how much would that impact the driving experience?

I didn't find this obnoxious at all, actually its quite interesting to see the pretty much even split of types. What's more interesting is the ones who liked the type, owned the type.

THE RESULTS ARE IN! OUT OF 15 PEOPLE POLLED
( and you know how painful that can be... )

40% prefer coupe
40% prefer Targa
and only 20% are topless fans....

don't miss next week's poll where we will be asking the question
" When will Rob kick me off of this site for being too obnoxious? "

I just drove her from Las Colinas to North Dallas and back just for lunch. Top off, traffic was moving fast. I can't wait til 6 when I can drive home. Every day is a good Ferrari day, but some are better than others.

While I have a 308 GTS (removable top) and this makes it fun to drive, I must say that the coupe is a prettier car on most models due to the continuous lines
Steve Magnusson (91tr)
Posted on Thursday, March 22, 2001 - 10:01 am:

As Tenney implied -- depends on model for me. A TR/512TR spyder-conversion loses too much of its shape when the roof and C-pillars are removed, but a California Spyder -- yes, that would do nicely!
