For those of you into DIY, you can visit Crutchfield at www.crutchfield.com. They have free catalogs and 24hr technical support you can call them on your cordless phone while you are doing your install in the garage. What ever you do, get good work done at a reputable audioshop, look at a catalog and photos of their work. I've done installs since I was a kid and just because you walk in and see a bunch of late teens behind the counter, don't discount them as amateur. Some of these guys are serious about sound and do avoid scuffing your lower dash with their cordless screwdriver. Heck some of these guys go nuts and spend enough money to buy a nice 308, but instead put in nuts systems into their cars, strap on ear protection and go the local soundoff competition with dB meters and sanctioned judges and all....crazy huh?

It's like the combo in-dash receiver, CD player minus the amp, so it has no watts...
All these new units that are out now with the swimming fish/dancing whatever displays and all that crap just don't look right in a 25 year old car, so I picked up an old McIntosh MX 401 off ebay. It has a very distinctive and classic look that just seems to fit the Ferrari.
And the specs are pretty good as well.
For an amp I ended up getting a low cost Alpine V12 series MRV-F307, which is a 4 channel amp.
That way in the future if I so desire, I can add and additional set of speakers, or a subwoofer. But at this point the door speakers have been fine. I don't remember which Polk speakers I put in, I think they were two way. I'll check...
At some point I'll add a CD changer to the mix, but for now the single CD head unit has been great.
I love and respect the guys and gals that can keep a Ferrari original. But I just have to have some killer tunes now and then when I drive, no matter which car I'm in. And that almost always requires updating the stereo system!

David, excuse my ignorance but what the heck is a head unit? How many watts is it? Are the Polks 2-way or 3-way? Thanks, Jerry

I put a McIntosh head unit in my 77 308, along with an Alpine amp, and for the 5 1/4 door speakers I used Polk Audio...
It will even get louder than the Tubi...

Well - just last week I went to a local car audio shop to get them to re-attach the antenna hook-up since my radio reception was bad. I walked out with a brand new stereo including some 12 disc changer AND carbon fiber dash accents (since obviously the Cherokee's interior has to match the Ferrari 308's carbon fiber shifter knob)

Are car audio shops addicting????? YIKES! And what in the world is a subwoofer? ...a navy dog??? I think for my bank account's sake I'll just listen to the purrrrrrrrr of the Ferrari's engine

I'm planning to use one of those cassette adapters from my Discman in my GT4 (I'll just leave the Discman on the passenger's seat). My Blaupunkt cassette-deck is working great now.

There was a topic awhile back about GT4 radios. There might be some info there that could help.

I have a 308 GT4 and have had problems installing a CD player as it is a vertical installation - i.e. it "Drops" into the center console of the car.

I've tried a Sony (about 3 years old) and a Phillips and they both jump badly on the move. I also mailed a few companies and most said that 60degrees from vertical was the most you could install their players at.

I'd be interested to hear experiences of people with single in dash players that work when insatlled verically.

I am very into stereos and I would like to recommend an Alpine Head Unit. They are by far the top of the line when it comes to car stereos. I have an Alpine powering the system in my car and it does wonderfully! If you have anymore questions let me know. No matter what let me know what you pick for your choice.

Wondering what brands/models of CD players some of you have installed in your 308's? How did the installations go? Also, has anyone installed speakers anywhere else other than the 6 inchers in the doors? Thanks, Jerry.
