It might be tough to get people to use a Ferrari only site, but I for one don't even bother looking at ebay anymore. It's inundated with multiple posts from the same people. I can never find anything I'm interested in, or at least I can never browse through it and look because there is simply too much in one category.

I am an AVID and aggressive buyer of anything related to Ferrari. I would use a site for Ferrari only stuff.

BUT, ebay basically has it all! Last time I checked, there were like 5000 items on there! God help me!!

jason - hadn't seen that one before. it looks pretty lame. it's more of a brokerage listing cars on consignment than a classifieds site. low-budget too - no pictures anywhere. minimal editorial control on the listings too (errors abound). i'll bet dollars for doughnuts that when you call the ubiquitous 800# they tell you "oh, that's sold, but tell us what you want and we'll find it for you - no problem!".

see - now if someone could do that right, and invest some real time in it to keep it fresh and helpful, that'd be great.

Here's a decent classified ads website:

i think your biggest challenge is building the critical mass. FerrariAds.com has some posts, but it pales next to FML and Hemmings and DuPont and on and on. no knocks to you, dude, but those people either market like mad or they have extremely entrenched market positions.

why do you think FerrariAuctions.com will be more likely to be successful - and at a hugely higher up-front cost to list/etc?

EBay owns the online auction market. everybody knows to surf ebay. i do a search for "Ferrari" there once a week to see what's popping. i'm sure most everyone else here has done and does likewise.

furthermore, auction isn't the primary mechanism through which Ferraris change hands. for the reasons whart mentioned (and more), there's a huge comfort issue in knowing that the car is as-advertised, is in the shape you expect, etc. etc.

if it's pretty trivial to do it, and you step out of the way so there's no legal liability to you, then go for it, but i think you'll have an uphill battle getting cars up there.

my two pennies, dude.

IMO, i think you'd do better by focusing on the simple classifieds market. it's a pain to keep tabs on the market. you have to watch FNA, basically every FNA dealership site, FML, Hemmings, DuPont, Cars.com, CarBuyer.com, AutoWeek, and on and on. nobody attempts to concentrate the data. not sure it can be done, but i think the market could do with a more complete listing service/site.

just a few thoughts: one of the biggest problems in is authentication of condition, mechanical or otherwise (a problem even when you have had an opportunity to eyeball or are physically present). It seems to me that if you could have the cars authenticated by local experts first( nothing fancy but a good short description like the summaries we see in post auction descriptions), that would be a real advantage. Indeed, that could be an added feature, vetted by the consignor, before the posting goes up. Also, good pictures should be a requirement, in a format that allows multiple views. Finally, escrow, or failsafe financial arrangements, and a decent fee charged by you for the amount of all of these services you provide. There is no reason why this couldn't be even more sucessful than a live, in person auction. There are obviously alot of legal issues, but they should not get in the way.

Hello all opinionated FerrariChat.com users.

Do you think a Ferrari only auction site would work?

What are the pros and cons?

Enough volume? Legal risks? Would you use it?
