Thanks for the counsel. I will speak with my staff attorney. I pay him a lot, maybe I should make him work a little.

J. Scott:

California law provides that not only are you entitled to the repairs, you are entitled to loss of use, and dimunition of value. I would get an estimate of the value of the vehicle before, and after to establish your loss.

I am glad to report that the insurance company for the transportation carrier is stepping up to the plate. I haven't got the check yet but they are accepting the appraisers estimate, which is about the same as my friends shop estimate of $7065. I should have my car in excellent shape in about a month. It takes a long time to get some parts. Shucks!

if i might make a plug for a great transport company i have used before:

http://enclosedvehicletransport.com/

they run a fleet of duelies. are insanely anal retentive with the cars. never drive them. never waylay them (point to point only). never start them up even. all on/off the truck is done by winch. no screwing around.

and to boot, they're wonderful people.

transported my 996TT (see profile) from AL to MA. almost transported a 355 from GA to MA last week (deal fell through) - didn't hesitate one microsecond before calling them. good folks.

Aaron: Anytime; e-mail me at the address shown, just be sure to title the e-mail someway that I will recognize (such as FerrariChat, or something). I can forward the e-mail to my work e-mail and read it there.

Jeremy: I used VIP Transport. I will post here what the results are of trying to get them to pay for the damage. I will in fact reference the Chat room to them and the fact that I will post the results where dozens of potential clients will read it. If they do the right thing and take care of it, I will say so, if not, I will say so.

Eric: The damage was not as great financially ($750) as J Scott's, but the ••••• was that the car had absolutely no damage, plus the trauma of discovering the damage on it when it came in and arguing with the driver about it. With regards to Orlando Ferrari Dealer, I spoke with them a couple of times when I was searching for my car. They were great, one time I called and they had no 308/328's in stock, but they practically insisted I come in to take a tour of their shop, look over the neat cars they had, meet the service manager, etc. They seemed to be very nice, altough I never went in. I have heard only good things about them.

Jeremy: I would recommend Concour out of Washington. Although I have not used them, they were very highly recommended by a fellow who was showing a car at the Pebble Beach Concour (enough said, as far as I am concerned). I would have used them, but they were going to take an additional 2 weeks beyond the VIP pickup date, and I did not want to leave the car out there for that long, plus VIP had been recommended to me by someone else. With regards to VIP, I will withold recommending them at this point, pending resolution.

Great reading these posts about getting the new car from the transport company. I am reminded of the day my car showed up. I used Interstate, BTW. My car was in the center of this large two deck enclosed transporter. The driver backed the first car off and onto the lift gate. Then he figured it would be better if I drove my car off and he could guide me. I had to back it up over the wheel wells of the truck and onto the ramp. So anyway I'm all excited and nervous and I get in and try to remember the starting procedure. I turned the key part way to let the fuel pump up. Then I cranked the starter. The car lurched forward toward this incredibly expensive Jag parked in front of me. I had been so used to driving my auto transmission truck, that I had forgotten to put her in neutral and push the clutch in. The truck driver nearly threw himself in front of my car. Fortunatly the brakes worked and I didn't crush the driver or the Jag. Backing the car onto the gate seemed pretty easy after that. I was wondering if the truck driver would just let me back right off the gate after that starting escapade.

Jeremy: Don't use Transcar. I am still working with them for the repair on my 328. ($7,000+). Make sure you spend the extra $ to use an enclosed carrier! Even then, they are sometimes rough on driving the cars up the ramps. Ferrari's are quite low and must be put on the carriers slowly. Ususlly the drivers are not used to such low cars. That is how they broke my front spoiler and messed up the gear pan. Not everyone has such a bad experience though. My car is still a real joy. Where in California are you getting the car from?

Alberto,

Who did you use to transport the car? I am look at a 308 in California. Provided the car checks out, I was weighing my options on how to get it back to Texas. Anyone else have any numbers $$$?

Alberto,

Thank you for sharing your experience with and opions regarding Omega, as they "brought to light" some of my reservations towards them. You were the first person that I've been able to locate who has had personal dealings with them. As mentioned earlier, I have paid them a visit to look around and meet them personally - they even had a 360 Modena F1 Challenge car in the service bay - but, up until now, I only had recommendations from Olympia. Steve had suggested that I may be due for new timing belts soon as a precaution, but then again he hasn't seen my 308 (at least that I'm aware of). Perhaps I'd be better off holding out until my next "major" and take it down to Ferrari of Central Florida in Orlando - a client of ours sends his 360 to them for service and enjoys dealing with them. This is my first Ferrari, so I'm completely new to all this, and am very apprehensive to say the least.

I'm very sorry to hear about the extensive damage that you and J. Scott experienced during transit -- that's atrocious! I'm scared to death to ever use a transport company now.

J Scott: The damage amounted to $750, they bent the front hood (the usual crimp when people do not depress the lock on the strut). I am still working with them to see what they intend to do. I will post the results of that in the chat forum under a new string when it gets resolved one way or the other. Their initial response was resistance, but I am trying to work with them. I will let you know if they do the right thing (or not) and whether I would use them again.

Eric: About Omega and Steve, I did not want to post anything here about that, but since you ask, I will say that I was disapointed. I asked for a pre-purchase inspection, including a compression check. I went to his shop and he charged me $200, but he did not put anything in writing, not the results of his inspection, not the results of the compression check, nothing. He did give me a verbal statement that it was leaking oil and that the clutch needed to be replaced, and that the car was a good car. However, I expected a written report (as all other shops who have done one for me have done) and the printout from the compression check. To his credit, when I asked him to put it on the lift, he did so right away. All in all, I was disapointed. Mostly I just walked away with the feeling that I just handed this guy 200 bucks and I got about five minutes of his time for him to tell me about the car, with no written description of what he checked or did not check, no proof that he did the compression check, etc. By the way, I am glad I beat you to it !! (that is, if you were thinking of buying it).

With regards to Olympia, Photis is great to deal with. Although we had agreed on a price before I went out, he adjusted the price on account of the clucth, which he did not know was worn and needed to be replaced, and therefore had not previously told me that it needed that work. He was fair about it and I would go back to him for another purchase without hesitation.

Congratulations Alberto: I got my 89 328 about six weeks ago. I am in Clovis California. Hope you didn't have as much trouble with the transportation company as I did. My estimate for repairs is over $7,000. They broke the front spoiler, ruined two wheels, broke the gear pan, a tail light and tweeked the doors. Good news is that the car runs great now that I have fixed the gear pan. Other repairs are comming as we negotiate the insurance. Maybe we will meet up in Carmel later this year.

Alberto...

Wow, it is a small world indeed. I had a hunch that it was the same 328 -- way to go, that is one excellent car!

I purchased the 308QV from Olympia also back in October, and dealt with Photis. You're right, he is a great guy -- easiest car deal I've ever done -- beats the "Big 3" hands down! I plan on having my 308 serviced soon at Omega -- how was your experience with Steve / Omega?

Posted on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 - 9:28 am:

Thank you everybody.

I will post pictures and otherwise update my profile when I update my computer. This dog of a computer is still running windows 3.1 and its got some bugs in it that I cannot sort out (for example, it does not let me read my e-mails). The thing is older than dirt, so it's time to upgrade, so I can post the pictures, etc.

It was in fact a long search; I was very specific about what I wanted (condition, etc) and frankly was about ready to give up and look for something else when I came across this one. Glad I stuck to my guns; car looks like new (transport guy had assumed it was new, was very surprised then I told him it was 15 years old).

Aaron: I live in San Diego. Where are you?

Eric: I indeed bought it from Olympia Motor Cars in Jacksonville (dealt with Photis, the owner, good guy) and Steve at Omega did the pre-purchase inspection. It is a red/tan, 1987 with 9032 miles on it when I bought it. Car is indeed in excellent condition, inside and out, all tools and books. I had Gary Bobileff of Bobileff Motor Cars here locally do the major service on it (belts, valve adjustment, cam seals/gaskets, the works), rebuilt the water pump, put in new clutch and pressure plate (I suspect the previous owners did not know how to drive it, or they must have done burnouts in the car, based on the wear on the old clutch plus the condition of the old rear tires.) and is also in great shape mechanically. I put new Dunlop 8000's on it as well. I get the car smoged this Friday, so I can finalize the DMV registration process. Next step is to get a car cover for it.

Thanks everyone for your encouragement.

Congratulations. I hope you enjoy driving your car as much as most of the guys (and girls) on this chat forum.

I noticed that I was very nervous when I first took the car for a spin as I was used to being much higher up (in my 4x4) and didn't like anyone getting too close. Almost made me too tense to enjoy the car in traffic. Hope this fear fades away in time.

I find the front scrapes the driveway of my office on the way out but when I drive very slowly, its OK.

Enjoy your new toy.

Alberto...

That's great news -- glad you finally found the Ferrari 328 of your dreams! Very good choice. Best wishes to your newfound Ferrari ownership.

By the way, the details of your purchase sound familiar. If you don't mind me asking, was this the same 328GTS (red w/ tan) that was for sale here in Jacksonville, FL at Olympia? If so, that was a superb 328 from what I was told (something like 9000 miles on the odo.) Wanted to pay Olympia a visit to see the car, but by the time I got there it was sold and on it's way to the lucky new owner. Steve at Omega filled me in on the details of the car being shipped to California.

At any rate, congratulations!

It's awesome isn't it? Everything I experience in the Ferrari is a good one. Even the pricey services make me feel good that my "kid" is healthy. My weekend experience? Met a good friend for happy hour Saturday night with my wife. Over the next month he's getting rid of the 911 and Esprit for a TR, so this was maybe my last chance to drive his Lotus. We decide on a nice club a few miles away and it was quite cool to pull up to VIP valet in a Lotus and my wife right behind in the 328. See my other post about driving the Lotus, but my wife's response explains it all... "oh, that's the most fun I think I've ever had." (Doesn't make me sound good) Anyway, she's getting the passion. Maybe I can use that towards another horse.

Oh, and later that night busting down the tollway at 1am in chilled still air, well, at least until the 328 and Lotus broke through it.

Congrats on your new Ferrari. I know the feeling. Last weekend, I and several of my Ferrari friends met for lunch and to view and discuss differences between an 85 US 308 and a 84 Euro 308. As I was walking around my friends car, I was saying to myself "I actually own one of these!"...It is a marvelous feeling!

ALBERTO, UPDATE YOUR PROFILE WITH PICTURES AND OTHER INFO!

Congrats again!

Congrats Alberto!

Yeah, know how you feel. Kind of the same story for me only a few short months ago - but now that it's in the garage, there is nothing like it!!

BTW - where in CA are you? Oh, and be sure to post a picture of it soon!

After 10 months of searching, starting out looking for a 308QV, finding none in decent shape then looking for a 328, looking at about a dozen cars (including seeking Ferrarichat input for one of them) in 4 states, finding one and buying it on the other end of the Country, waiting 3 weeks to get it to California, agonizing over some damage done by the transport company the day the car came, then waiting another 2 weeks for major service, I finally, finally(!!), drove my 328GTS this weekend for the first time (aside from the test drive). It was everything I thought it would be and more.

Two mishaps: Found out that the front scrapes on the way out (but not on the way in) of my driveway (definitely need to figure a way to fix that, a 2 x 12 across the driveway ought to do it). Also, I had to pull over and get the manual out to figure out how to work the parking lights (rookie!).

I am suffering from the same thing that a lot of you have, that is, I still cannot believe I have a Ferrari (although I only need to check my bank account or the garage to attest to the fact that I do; checking the garage is much less painfull).
