Jerry -- yeah, I know what you mean. The bulging sidewalls of the XWX's is very 70's and very cute. That's one of the reasons why I'm twixt and between about changing ....

When I first got my 81 308GTSI I was planning on replacing the wheels (from original) to the larger more $$$ friendly tire selection. Now I'm cought in a quagmire because the stock XKR (or whatever) are growing on me. Actually I love'm now. I've always been a fan of the 246 Dino and the extra tire surface really looks "classic". You asked.

Neville -- I can't comment on the differences in handling/harshness from 14" to 16" as when I bought my ex-'78 it already had 16" BBS wheels on it -- but I sure liked the handling with the 16" wheels, and it didn't seem overly harsh to me (and for you the wheel diameter change is practically negligible so I think you have zero risk going to 16"). With the economic situation you describe, it's a no-brainer IMHO -- give SuperformanceUK a call! (I'd also think that you could get at least 300 GBP for your 390mm set on eBay to offset your costs even further.)

Neville, I saw those wheels in person when I visited Elliot at SF and they were beautifully made.

I kept my 14" and shod them with Pirelli P4000's. You are fortunate than me as they are avaliable in "V" ratings in the UK, I was stuck with "H" here in Canada. I paid about $150Cdn each (roughly 65 UK Pounds?)

Thanks all for your input. Nice car Steve :-)

Yes, I do think the 16"ers are growing on me. Part of my reason for thinking of changing is that I'm due 4 new tyres soon. Now, here in the UK Michelin XWX's are 250 GBP each .... that's 1000 GBP for the whole car. I can go to www.superformance.co.uk and get 4 aftermarket 16"ers for 1000 GBP, plus 4 modern tyres for only 400 GBP more .... the difference isn't that great ....

Has anyone ever had an experience of the quality of the "non genuine" 16" alloys ? Are they good, or poor ?

Steve, did you notice any great improvements in handling when you changed up ? Did the ride get much harsher ?

Thanks !

We'll have to agree to disagree as I do think I recouped all of the $2,900 I paid for the 5 wheel QV set (sold 4 on the car and the 5th to a FLister for $650).

Thanks for the engine compliment -- not bad for 130K miles eh...

I don't see them adding to the value. Would you say that you gained profit upon your 308 resale? I imagine you could have sold your 308 for the same price without the 16 inch wheels. If a 308 doesn't have a 30K I can see a potential buyer deducting from the price but I don't see this happening due to the lack of 16 inch wheels.

Richelson -- I would disagree that either the stock 16" QV wheels or the 16" reproductions wheels are "expensive" in the long run. IMHO they are one of the very few modifications that add directly to the value of the car so the cost is fully recovered on resale (whereas other high-quality 16" aftermarket wheels are in the same cost ballpark, but don't add/change the resale value much).

Most I see are the color of the car. The only ones I have seen black are later QVs. Look through the Showroom and on Ebay. Most will be the color of the car. Email me off list Steve. 16 inch wheels are expensive. I am not sure if you have them already but they will be about $3K for originals and $1,800.00 for aftermarket. You will need to change your alignment specs too. You may want to keep your stock wheels and save the money for other service items.

The rocker panels on the 308 (panels below the door) are supposed to be black.

Richelson -- you're hijacking Neville's 308 wheel thread so I'll respond privately in more detail, but the short answer is that I use/used both the 308 and the TR as daily drivers year-round (but do try to stay out of the wet) -- both about 5000 miles/year (I like to live close to work).

Observations:
16" wheels are the way to go, if for no other reason than that there is a huge selection of tires for them.
All 308's, 328's and 348's through 1992 came with black rocker panels stock. Often people paint them body color, especially 348's.

Steve you use to drive your 308 everyday correct? How did you enjoy it for everyday use? Do you drive you TR everyday as well? How much mileage did you put on it in a day? (approx.)

I like you interior and I would also like to see more pics of your exterior. The 16 inch wheels really compliment the car. Great pictures. Thanks.

Richelson -- the lower panels were already black when I bought the car in '87 (and I'm not sure what "stock" would be). I have some other pics that I can email to you -- what are you looking for?

And a second view:

while the lower tire sidewall of the 16" wheels gives a much more modern look, the extra width of the rear wheels/tires also goes very well on the 308GTB/S coachwork IMHO.

Has anyone got any "before" and "after" shots of their 308 with the original wheels fitted (14" ? 15" ? I forget) and 16" standard style (but just bigger) wheels fitted (like the ones you can get from Superformance).
