Peter, a mean-looking 308 you got. Nice wheels! Bruce, that's exactly what the owner of the shop told me when I picked up the car on Friday. Warm up at least 5 minutes before driving off. |

Right, Peter. 308s like to rev. Look at the torque curve in your manual. Also, until your fluids warm up, try short-shifting form 1st to 3rd. Barry |

peter nice car...congrats rule #1 let your car warm up at least 5-8 minutes, let those oils flow,,,,then your gear shifting will not be stiff and tight.. bruce |

Peter K., I just bought my first Ferrari so I am a newbie also. I am used to driving Jeeps and trucks (it has been 7 years since I actually owned a "car"). I did have to "learn" how to drive the Ferrari (still learning). One of the things I did pick up on was gear selection. The Ferrari likes to rev a little higher than what I am used to. I have found that I need to be in one gear lower than what I am used to. If I think or feel like I should be in 4th gear.....I probably should be in 3rd. |

It should be this Sunday early by HK stadium, I'll give you further details once I confirm them. I work the US markets so basically I do not sleep. You can ring up to the wee hours. |

Chris, sorry about not calling you. Was too busy catching up with work. Sunday drive sounds cool, what time and where to meet. BTW, when do you usually go to sleep? Maybe I can call you during late evenings. |

Peter, when are we hooking up? My ferrari mechanic invited me for the sunday morning drive this week, are you interested? It would be a great opportunity to meet fellow F-car enthusiats and my mechanic. I suggest you try him out and avoid the high price wrenchs at ITM, he's a real good guy. He told me there are two f-car groups for the morning drive, the fast guys and older no-so-crazy fast guys. I asked him how fast the first group runs at and he said sometimes up to 280kph, wow, that's serious speed for public highways. Most likely I'll go with the slower group this weekend to get a taste of it first. |

Whew...good to hear that. That's a relief. Now I can really make the car howl. |

TomD is right, you should not worry about the RPMs. In the City I do the same as Richelson does, I shift usually early. The 4000RPM I would not use in 1st gear for extended times. IN that case shift to 2nd. |

peter Your car is meant to be driven above 4k rpms - if you don't then you are missing out. |

Final drive ratio really helps to dictate the speed at which the rpms are matched at. For intstance a 308 QV has 4.06 final drive ratio. Which is lower than the late 70s model 308s. I was the same way. I was use to driving autos or other forms of manual trans. vehicles that are completely different that F-cars. At this time 4000 rpm sounded like the engine was really screaming and I would always shift early as I was use to autos. You will get use to it. Around town I shift around 3500 or so anyway. |

Thanks for all your opinions. They are most helpful. I think the Mondial hovers at around 4000 rpm. Sounds awfully loud. I hope the Mondial can handle such high rpm for extended period of time without damaging the engine or the clutch. Too used to driving automatics. I don't understand much about gears. The gear ratio for first is 1:13.072 and 1:8.996 for second. |

Peter, look at the RPM. A gear is a gear, no matter which one you chose. My 348 runs 20Mph @3000RPM in first. If I put it in 2nd it is below 2500RPM, which is not enough. Coming out of our town I have to drive 20Mph for 6 blocks and that is only in first. Schoolzones, First. |

I tend to look more at RPMS. In the city I tend to keep it between 2500 and 3500. IF you want people to notice you crank it up to 4500. |

2nd gear IMO. I even start in 2nd sometimes when slightly rolling as first gear tends to not getting you moving too much. On a mondial it might be a different gear ratio than a 308. If it is then it would probably be geared lower so first would be even less effective. HTHs. |

I am a newbie in driving Ferraris. Which gear is better when driving in the city at speeds of 25mph or less? 1st or 2nd? I have an 86 Mondial. |
