Excellent points Michael. The marketing costs for XM is very high right now indeed. As time goes by, they will need more than the 10 bucks a month to offer such services, thus I believe that commercials will be more common. Similar to cable television - you pay for viewing commercials as well. I worked with one company for a short while on a similar project. There are actually four big comptetitors for the "XM" type of radio, and a few others, but knowing the details of how it works - its a nice idea, but a poor implimentation. Then again, I feel the same way about the MS Natural Keyboard due to its anti-ergonomics. XM has a name, and that's what pushes it as something familiar, 'oh, its an x instead of an a or an f' - and that helps out consumers. I wish them luck in the up and coming years and glad that reception is working well for you. I don't think that will change. |

I know the cellualr companies and XM are at eachothers necks and are trying to get the FCC to play mediator for the two. Cell companies contend that the land based repeaters will interfere with cellular signal and available spectrum that cellular companies want to use in the future for high speed data and more voice coverage. XM radio companies are having a fit because they say just the opposite and want to share the specturm and are complaining that cellular companies are monopolizing the spectrum and are limiting the strength of their repeaters. This is one factor that can limit the acceptability, in the short term, on the consumer end on the buy in to this new form of entertainment. I know marketing for XM is high. But this may become a turn off on a majority of consumers who will pay a for a subscribtion service and receive less than what the marketers fed you to get excited about it and buy it. Early adopters will probably like XM and won't mind its shortcomings in it's infancy because they understand this as with any new technology. Hopefully subscription costs will go down in the long run and improvements will be made to the system with the same proportions- and not used to fight for spectrum or the like. |

I am in a real crappy reception area for true radio ( NYC / NJ ) and you think it would be better, but it is just not. I also cannot stand that during drive time, all I get to listen to is ads. Many of the XM stations are ad free, and the others are pretty short. I have not found any reception area problems as of yet. I think it will still take a bit of time for it to catch on, and when more OEM's other than GM put it in as an option it will grow. Sirrus, the XM competitor is still having problems with their system, so we will have to see. |

Thats supposed to be the new thing to get but for some reason i cant see it getting big. If it hasnt really taken off by now it probably wont. The reception is supposed to be perfect nationwide, but this summer some guys were testing for recption in my town by aiming a satillite dish where the satilite was supposed to be but couldnt find it. Its a really good concept though, since there is such a large selection of music, the only thing is i only like about 1/8th of it. another page is www.xmsr.com |

I just installed in the ML430 XM Radio and I am in love. I have been a toy / gadget lover for years ( BlackBerry, TiVo, Digital Cable ) and now XM. The sound quality is wonderful, and the selection of music is great. I put the FM Modulator Pioneer unit in because of the ML's command center radio, but I would put a regular head unit CD / XM in the TR if I get hooked. If you have not seen XM go to http://www.xmradio.com |
