i checked the paint sticker on my '99 355. it says the paint is Pittsburgh Paints (PPG). Verniciatura Originale Original Painting PPG Colore - Colour Giallo Modena 4305 D.S. this article off the Automotive Service Association web site says that PPG does all Ferrari vehicles (dated 1998; scroll down): http://www.asashop.org/autoinc/nov98/briefs.htm this chart on PPG's site lists Ferrari colors: http://www.ppg.com/_private/FrameResult.asp?f=/autocoloritalia/coloriture/coloriture%201998/ferrari_1998.htm doody. |

Regardless of who supplies the paint, Glasurit, PPG,etc., Ferrari would supply the formula for their 'FER102' color. Ergo, the possible slight (if any) difference in the hues from mfr. to mfr.

Although the code has always been FER F102, the paint manufacturer/supplier has changed over the years. My 348 is painted with 'Glasurit' F102, but much earlier Fly yellow ferraris were not painted by 'Glasurit' and I dont believe new ones are either, Glasurit being far too expensive these days. |

I'm looking at the list (with small color samples) of the 21 'standard' colors available on Ferraris as of 1998 and there is only 1 yellow shown (Giallo Modena, also known as Giallo Fly). I would be most interested to know if there ever was more than 1 choice of yellow available. Anyone have any info on that possibility? As far as Nika's 308 being a slightly different color of yellow than the 550 yellow, they might have changed the formula for the paint slightly over the years but I have never seen another yellow referred to aside from Giallo Modena or Giallo Fly and I believe that the paint code for that color has always been 'FER102' regardless of the possible slight differences in the color over the years.

If the color that we know as "fly" yellow stands for "Ferrari Light Yellow", is there a "Ferrari Dark Yellow". I always thought that "Ferrari Light Yellow" was the color they used on a few of the 275 NART Spyders. That was a similar color to the yellow that was on a lot of Jaguar XKEs. I agree with David that it was named "fly" because it does attract insects. (Especially at 100+ MPH.) |

From ferrariclub.com: -------------------------------------------------- Giallo Modena (Glasurit FER 102) Also known as "Fly Yellow." Some Ferraristi maintain that the "FLY" stands for "Ferrari Light Yellow." A stunning yellow that demands to be noticed. Named for the region in Italy where Enzo Ferrari grew up, Modena. Not coincidentally, that region's official color is yellow. -------------------------------------------------- Hope that helps, Hubert

I thought it was called "fly" yellow because a car painted that color of yellow is covered with insects immediately after it is parked. Other marques have been painted "fly yellow." |

they call me mellow yellow...........Of course I'm lurking here - and a tad busy. If you look at my profile you'll see my babies. The Cherokee was painted with a 550 Yellow which is slightly different than the 308's yellow. Now if we all signed my "Make Yellow the Official Ferrari Color" petition here......er....oh nevermind
I'm sure those wonderful Fila shoes would look HOT in yellow too!!!!! Right Ernie? Ed? |

Marq--Is it listed as Giallo FLY, with all capital letters? That would imply the acronym for Ferrari Light Yellow. Might be time to write the factory. |

The current Yellow is, indeed, called 'Giallo Modena'. The color is also known as 'Fly Yellow'. Some Ferraristi say that the 'FLY' stands for 'Ferrari Light Yellow' but I have been unable to ever find documented evidence of this. 'Giallo Modena' is named for the region where Enzo grew up, Modena. The official color of that region is yellow. The paint color label on my 328GTS reads "Giallo Fly FER102" I believe that the same paint code, FER102, is used for 'Giallo Modena'. I'm not aware that Ferrari ever offered another choice of yellow besides this one but would really like to know if that is the case.

the current ferrari yellow is called "Giallo Modena". Giallo for "Yellow" and Modena named after the town in Italy (Enzo's birthplace, I believe). they have been using this same yellow for a while now. though check the archives or ask nika - i remember her saying something about variations of ferrari yellow back in the 80s maybe? related to painting her jeep? doody. PS: no clue where "Fly" comes from, though Ferrari Light Yellow works for me :-) |

Swatters (sp) blue is a real color and was named after the '60's Ferrari driver. That is the way I understand it anyway. |

I may be wrong, but I think Ferrari's yellow, is called Swatters Yellow, or Swaters Yellow. I don't know why. |

I always thought it stood for Ferrari Light Yellow. So you could actually use both terms when writing some dope hip-hop lyrics. eg. Yo man, hop in my fly, FLY(light yellow) car and roll wit me as we flick switches and make mad dollas to spend on the fly honeys until we go ozone. |

Just curious what the history/origin of that color's name is. "Fly" has become so synonomous with hip-hop vernacular that I was surprised to see it actually goes pretty far back. |
