Mt Palomar in San Diego is great mid week, less bikes.
San Diego is about 1.5 hours south of Orange County. The 5 freeway aroud San Onofre the nuclear facility that looks like a pair of breasts is what we call are own version of the autobahn. Traffic routinely goes around 90 and with a few gaps in traffic a great place to go 150 plus. Keep your right rear view mirror pointed up to keep an eye open for CHP choppers and planes. The neat thing is that there are no onramps or offramps for the revenue collectors to get on. A good idea is to carry a scanner and a good pair of binnocs for your wife so she can assist you.In Orange County ,Modejeska Canyon road rocks but is a bit hard to find if you are not a local. Also Newport Beach Autosports on PCH is a great place to check out some great cars plus some great restaurants. Enjoy

Pretty sure the route that Erik referenced includes a fairly decent tunnel which should come in handy if you're Tubi'd up (or not).

Here is a good one for you...
Take the Ventura FWY 101 westbound/northbound to Topanga Canyon Blvd. Head South on Topanga and this will take you to Pacific Coast Hwy. Nice twisty road. About half way down to the coast on the right you will notice OLD Topanga road(T's off Topanga). This will take you back to the valley and is even more windy. As this T's into Mulholland Hwy, take a Left- westbound and a few miles you will see Stunt Road(Near where they filmed M*A*S*H* and Dukes of Hazzard) This once again will take you to PCH and is superbly windy. Have fun in my old stomping ground!

If you are truly ambitious, the PCH in the Big Sur area is unbelievable, as is the Post Ranch Inn. Take the freeways up from LA to cut travel time (the locals can direct you) and see if you can sneak into the Post Ranch for 2 nites. Your wife will love you for it.

Martin:

The Wine Country in California is in Northern California, not the South. they have stuff like, Disneyland, etc. While there maybe some areas that claim they make wine in Southern California, usually the stuff the make isn't suitable to drink until you already had a bottle or two.

I suggest the Ortega Highway down there, but I would avoid that road on Sunday AM, because of the various motorcycle traffic, usually on the wrong side of the road. Have fun.

Norm,
we will actually be in Orange County on Wednesday and back on Saturday. We will meet up with Tino from MENSA on Saturday afternoon and have dinner with him. Will gladly take that ride.

Tenny those two option sound good as well.

Probably the most famous mountain drive is SoCal is the Ortega Highway. It's off the San Diego Freeway (405) in Orange County. It's worth the painful freeway experience to get there....Norm

Don't know where you're located, but Mulholland Dr. can be accessed by a number of northbound routes exiting Hollywood, Bel-Air, Beverly Hills.

Angeles Crest Highway can be picked-up near Glendale and is a pretty fun route, also.

Please help me out here. I want to take that Spider for a spin and see what everybody is talking about "Mountain Roads", which we have plenty here in Florida NOT.

Please post some routes for my wife and me to enjoy. I will post pictures in return on Monday!
