The 3200 GT was not sold in the US. The first Maserati's to come here since Ferrari's ownership of the company are the 2002 4.2 liter Spyder and Coupe.

Was the 3200GT ever sold in the US? I like the idea of the biturbo engine, as long as it doesnt catch on fire.

You should have tried the 3200GT! Mad torque, it was nearly impossible not to spin the tires. Sometimes it even happened when you just reversed it. The new engine is, from what I have heard, much more refined.

Willis,

From what I have gathered the Maser engine is completely new and future Ferrari engines will be based upon it. I went to the launch of it here in Sweden and I was amazed at how much the build quality has improved over the years. I'm yet to drive it but I have been invited to a test drive so I'll give a more detailed report soon.

Is the US. getting the 4200GT Coupe?

That's why I believe the rumors of the 420 Modena will happen sooner rather than later (next Spring rumors sound reasonable). The $90k Maser has a larger Ferrari built engine than the 360. Cars are totally different but I would think Ferrari would rather give a larger engine to those buying the 360 at twice the cost. Also, I imagine it will be cheaper production for them to use 4.2L engines in the 2 cars, streamline production.

Saw one today at Shelton. I do not like the style at all, very bland. I had no idea that the engine was a 360 derivative. Does it share any other parts with the Ferrari?

I saw four of them in Yellow, Red, Black and Blue at the LA Auto Show, and still didn't like them too well. I was more impressed with the classic Maserati's on display. How ever I did think that the Blue looked best on the car.

Just test drove a silver Maserati Spyder with F1 shifting. That is one sweet car and a blast especially with the top down in cold Utah weather. Sure got a lot of looks from people going - what the hell is that? At full throttle the shifting banged you to the back of the seat and you were flying to 100 and didn't know it- smoooooth!. The engine has a low mean rumble to it. At high speeds the wind noise was pretty loud but not obnoxious. It had the skyhook suspension and in Sport made it was really tight. I'd say that it's more a daily driver than a Ferrari. Its a great car that will compete well with the Mercedes and Jaguar set. One critique I have is that from the front it looks a bit too much like a Jag or Aston Martin.

I have driven a few older maseratis, like the 222, 224, biturbos, while in Italy and the comfort inside and the power they they deliver at any speed is amazing I would love to drive one of these. Hell i would love to be able to aford one.

Reliability will be a big issue for Maserati. If they fail in proving they're different now, they're finished. The Spyder's engine is based on an enlarged 360 Modena block with chains instead of belts. The Modena engine is pretty reliable so it shouldn't be any different in the Maserati.

I wouldn't call it a cute car either. The engine makes all the proper noises for an Italian sportscar. It sounds a little like the 360 but with a deeper growl. It's certainly not a quiet ride like a Jaguar XK series or any M-B SLs.

I agree that it is a nice looking car. I'm interested in seeing what the reliability is like. I think if the reliability is in the range of Jaguar's XK8 they will have no trouble with long term sales.

Cute wasn't what I came away with from the car. It looks what a modern Maserati should look like based on its long history of racing and performance cars. Remember, Maserati was racing cars when Enzo Ferrari was a child. I think it will attract customers who may have been considering a 456 or 550 and see a way to get into an Italian exotic for less than 1/2 the price. I liked the car and am considering buying one. But I want to wait until next years model come out and see what kind of depreciation the cars will suffer. In the past, in six months a Maserati had lost almost 1/2 its value.

I went to the official unveiling here in Vancouver this evening (hosted by Brian Jessel Ferrari).

On looks alone, its far better in person than what I've seen in the mags.

I got in one today at Ferrari of Atlanta and was impressed. It really looked great ! The body panel gaps matched up and the interior was wonderful. I think this car will do well in the USA. Its kinda like a cross between a Jaguar and a Ferrari.
