Wow, that's just an autocross. I do both track days, club racing, and autocross. I think autocross can be more dangerous for the workers than the first two. Usually on a track the corner workers are behind a barrier and are trained for that job. Autocross is just worked by the participants and there's always newbies. Never put a flag station where a car can go off. The thing that scares me the most about working autocrosses are the little Modified machines that are so dang fast and can pull 1.5 G's or so, but when they loose it, they just spin like they're on ice. I've never seen anyone hurt at an autocross, but some very close calls, mostly when someone is uprighting a cone and isn't watching for the next car through. |

If you want to learn to drive fast on a track, go to a driving school. There are many. I'm going to one next weekend at Road Atlanta with Peachstate PCA. I am a member/instructor with them. I am a member/instructor with Peachtree BMWCCA and am scheduled for a driver's school in mid July also at Road Atlanta. With nearly all regions, you don't have to be a member to participate in their schools. You don't have to own a BMW to be in BMWCCA but you do have to own a Porsche to be a member of PCA. I started this in the early 90's with Car Guys schools with my 328. I thought I was pretty good (everyone thinks that about themself) but got outrun by a VW rabbit in the hands of a good driver. I would run off on the straight but he would be all over me two turns later. It was a humbling experience. I did not know 1/4 of what I thought I knew. Anyone can put their foot down in a straight line. In 1996 I switched to a 944turbo and now just use my 328 for drives on the highway. |

I would have liked to take my cars to the track and opened them up, but I've held back on that desire. I'm not sure I wouldn't end up in that kind of trouble. I think I can drive, but? John |

That video is definitely scary. The FRC (fixed roof coupe) had the Z51 suspension (what's on mine) and the suspension can be a little tough to deal with. The video always gives me the chills when I see it. Glad he ONLY broke his leg, could have been worse. Patrick |

A more appropriate subject line may have been "Those damn inexperienced drivers!" This video was near or at the Bowling Green plant after the introduction of the fixed roof coupe(later to be Z06) in 1999. The person who was hit apparently had not been paying attention to what was going on and suffered a broken leg for his inattention and the driver's incompetance. I realize you were being sarcastic, and viewing this link should remind everyone of the inherent danger of participating in motorsports. I'll bet the guy driving the Vette learned quickly how fast things can get out of control when one is not proficient behind the wheel and gets involved with a sliding back end. ---John |
