Not married yet, seeking Female car enthusiest to talk me into picking up a F355 while they're still new-ish examples to be found. Perferably Italian. Actual Ferrari family lineage a plus.

His and Her's F355s? Are the roads in heaven thus paved?

Best!
Ben.

I had it the otherway around! My wife talked me into buying a Ferrari. My original intention was to buy a '66 GT350 Shelby. Apart from the 1965 HiPo convertible we still have, she was not in favour of another Mustang. Ferrari was also cheaper than a Shelby. Now the Mustang and the Ferrari park next to each other in the garage and although they are both V8's and have a horse on the front, they don't have much in common to talk about!

Hey, it was actually my wife's idea to order the 550, so that it would be delivered for our 10th wedding anniversary in fall 2000. Sort of a joint gift for/from both of us. Of course, this was after I pined over wanting a 550 for about a year...

Got you all beat. My wife gave me a card for Father's day and told me to go out and buy a Ferrari. I thought you could just walk in a buy one off the floor. Well, 18 months later my 2001 360 came in and then the car troubles began. Which I won't repeat here. After selling the car, my wife reminded me that she never got to sit in it or drive it. So, when our Spider comes in she plans on driving it home.

the one thing that I notice, is that everyone (or almost everyone) had a plan when they bought the Fcar, and those plans included how to deal with the wife about the car. This thread should be saved and when we get the next car, ideas from this thread could be used. Or we could sell these ideas to those who want an Fcar, but can't convince their wives of the necessity for the car.

i currently don't plan on buying one....yet. my usual m.o. is to wait till the prices drop about 50-65% of original price, then start working on the arguments for the wife. my biggest problem at the moment is no garage space ! i bought 2 spaces in kensington but they won't be finished till end 2004 - so what do i do in the meantime?

the first one was a little difficult. told her that i had not had a sports car since the kids were born (have 3), had provided everyone of them with everything they might need, had given her everything she wanted (within reason), did not smoke, drink, womanize, play golf or cards, or really have any other vices than being a car nut so i deserved a present. it helped that i had just received a rather large bonus, and had been offered the 348ts from a friend of a friend that was being forced to sell due to an impending marriage to a non-car woman, and hence it was a 'bargain'. then she loved the car (and i hated it), but i managed to sell it on at a profit.
then came the 512tr. told her that now that i had rosso corsa running through my veins, that i couldn't stop owning them....and they were a better alternative than many other cars that continued to drop off in value even late in the curve....and i had another good deal in the pipeline. at this point i did have to agree to repaint the house, but that wasn't too painful.
now buying the second keeper car was a cinch. she was complaining about driving her 10 year old mercedes station wagon, and how it did not suit her style and i had the nice car but did not have to drive every day in traffic etc. etc. so i said fine, i'll get you a nice car, how about a 456gta ? she took a look and liked it, then found out it had more horsepower than mine, and booked the deal. haven't bought it yet but will probably take delivery in august.
now the f40, of my dreams, is going to take some real convincing, but i have a few years to figure out a good story...........

Never married, so if I decide I want something I buy it. Hearing that you guys are able to get approval and in some cases enthusiasm from your other half does give me hope.

Martin, I used to be on par with you on the number of cigars I smoked. I've cut down to 4-5 a week, how can you stand it?

Chris,
I have offered to buy my wife a Ferrari or anything else she wants. She works hard and makes good money, but I can't get her to budge. Just today at a car show I suggested she might want a Mondial or a Dino or anything! She loves her Suburu Outback and that is that. The shame of it is I have been car shopping with her and she tends to like "drivers cars" and she is a good driver herself but she loves that Outback which does handle way better than it has a right to.

Ken,
I don't know how long you have been married, but sneaking a Ferrari in the garage is bad bad bad!
Ten years from now when you are arguing with her and she is losing, she will likely switch gears (pardon the pun) and say something like "remember 10 years ago when you brought the F car home!!!"
Better figure a way to appease her before you get a letter addressed to "respondent".

My wife loves cars, but she was not a Ferrari fan. Bought the 308, then a 348, then my 355.

Dana still did not like them.

Dana signed us up for Skip Barber, she graduated from a 3 day racing school at mid ohio on a thursday, flew back to Kansas City on friday and Saturday morning I presented her with a 246GT Dino, with the title in HER name.

Now, she loves Ferrari's, she loves her Dino very much, no one is allowed to drive her Dino, except me, and then only to the shop!

Gentlemen, buy your wife her own Ferrari, she will never complain about yours!

P.S. Let her pick it out, a friend of mine bought one for his wife and she hated it, he sold it... so let your wife be in involved.

In '97 was mumbling about buying a new 355.(that's the way I set the stage). Then I said if I buy a 355 I will stop smoking the day it arrives.(At that point I was smoking 8-10 havana's/day).Ordered it from FOA and smoked my last cigar as the car was being unloaded from the truck.Haven't smoked since.

Wise attitude!

Money is just a tool, neither good or bad.

Probably the only thing it can really buy is more freedom. The rest is up to the person.

I bought my car off EBAY. I yelled into the den that I was going to buy a Ferrari. She said "OK Dear". Several minutes later I yelled to her again,"You need to pack some clothes". She said "What for"? I said " Cause we have to go to Miami to pick up the Ferrari." No Problem guys.

I started by talking about it alot. Leaving Forza magazine and Ferrari books lying around the house alot. Show her pictures of Ferraris for sale on ebay... A slow, steady and insidious process of indoctrination to Ferrari ownership is best here.

Then I talked about how the car would not depreciate and the fact that I would do all my own maintenance. This last point was a bad move in my case as it only reminded her of the Porsche disassembled in the garage.

In the end, I had to buy her a new SUV, install a Fence in the back yard and agree to wash her car weekly. Overall an ok deal.

I think the racecar is going to be a tougher sell but Im starting on it. Already leaving copies of Sportscar around and a book on Formula Ford.

I purchased my 1985 308 QV in Feb without telling my wife. Stupid me thought that I could sneak the car home without her knowledge, so I brought the car home at midnight and pulled into the garage. Little did I know that I woke the entire neighborhood including my wife. She met me at the stairs say " what the F... is a Ferrari doing in our garage?" It has been 4 months and she is still pissed, but the purchase of new car for her, all new furniture, new landscaping, curtains, etc, etc, still have not kept her quite about the car. In summary, I totally agree that you should buy all of your toys prior to marriage.

After she realized that I have been wanting a Ferrari for all my adult life, she kept quiet when I bought it. She did complained a bit after the engine blew and I "poured" money into fixing it (still going on). So, now we are giving up the California life style, moving back to TX so she can be closer to her family, buy a house, and I can save more money for second Ferrari

My wife is financially very conservative which is a good thing until it's time to buy toys. I am conservative as well, but will blow extra cash on Ferraris. Since she didn't want a new car, negotiations were tough. She kept saying we didn't need an expensive car we can't even drive in snow or off road in the mountains. She finally gave spousal approval when she realized I had been wanting one for 15+ years and I agreed to let her breed her dog and help with the puppies. The 1st born puppy went to our mechanic!
Five Ferraris later(and another litter) has worn her down some, but we now have a deal where as long as we save X$ each month, then I can do what I want with my business money.

Bruce:

I bought the 355 and told her it was a demo. That lasted about 1 month. When she figured it out, it cost a vacation, carpets for the tahoe house, and I'm still paying. I haven't told her that I've ordered a 360 yet.

My insurance agent, who also happens to be a long-time friend, gave me a great piece of advice a few years ago. Make sure you buy all your toys BEFORE you're married. That way, they're non-negotiable. Well, I'm engaged, and we live together in our house that needs a kitchen upgrade. So, naturally, I bought my Ferrari. The kitchen can come later.

My poor wife. I hadn't owned or driven a car for twenty years; it was Liz who suggested that it might be nice to get something so we didn't have to deal with the crappy rental cars available in Manhattan. OK, so one valentine's day i bought her a new E320, xenons, sunroof, etc. She complained that she felt a little conspicuous in the car, so, by then, my own car genes having reasserted themselves, i traded it in, as part downpayment on a ferrari, and bought her a volvo. I've had 5 ferraris since then. She now drives a 740i Sport. She also doesn't complain about the cars.
